Super Mario Galaxy on the way for Wii

Oookay... now I'm really gonna lay off the game for a little while. The galaxies of the fourth observatory (Kitchen) feel somewhat less fun and a little bland compared to the ones before. Same goes for the slightly less fantastic music. The game itself is still a blast, but I'm beginning to notice how I'm really just steaming through the game. Perhaps I'll appreciate the whole thing more when I continue tomorrow.

Then again, Cyhwuhx just suggested to me this 'lesser greatness' has been put in the game on purpose, so it creates a moment of rest for the player. If that's so, it works for me. At 49 stars, I'm beginning to fear I'll go through the game way too fast at this rate. I'm gonna revisit some past levels and redo some stars I don't remember all that well any more (after 2 days already), to see if there's really a contrast or if I'm really playing this game too much.

I'm still convinced of the greatness of Super Mario Galaxy though: best Nintendo game in a long, long time :P

I like it more than Mario 64. It's so much more versatile and smooth and polished. Maybe that's because I played Mario 64 one or two years after release and it was not my first 3D platformer so that might have lessened its impact. I think Galaxy's level designs and general concept with spherical worlds and how the gravity is implemented beats every other platformer hands down.

Loving the speedruns as well, it turns earlier easy levels into a much more challenging frantic bonanza.

I've been playing this pretty obsessively tonight, now 17 stars in and I start to feel a little fatigue. Maybe it's time to retire to the Xbox 360 and chill out with some Skate.

This is a bot OT sorry, my dam Wii has just installed an update but I can't access either the shop, news channel or anything else... Anybody? :P The connection test I did about half hour ago connected fine, but as soon as I go to accept the new terms and conditions it comes up with an errotr message and says I can't connect to the internet... :(

As much as I love the game, I don't think it's better than Super Mario 64. I can't put my finger on why though. The only thing I don't like about it is that the levels don't seem to be as memorable as those in the earlier games.

.::: That's not strange. You are suddenly required not only to play differently, but also to keep a different 'constellation' of areas in mind. It's not exactly easy to start with, thinking of which areas are where and such. Actually when I think back on it myself, I tend to vividly remember the bigger areas like the bee starting area and the water-sphere, but when I think of the small things it becomes a bit hazy.

Partially that's what I like about it, it's so completely upside down (literally at times) that it requires new things at all levels.

There's also something very strange about the hub, it feels... comfy, despite being an open house and garden and being in space.

Yeah, I think it beats Mario 64 pretty easily, to be honest - Great game that will always be. Galaxy is just more vibrant, more inventive, more colourful and, to me, more fun. It feels much more like a 'real' Mario game than 64 ever did. It just has that special something.

This game has returned the abstract character and wackyness of the 2D Mario's and puts it firmly into 3D/4D. Mario 64 was 'just' a cartoony 3D world to play around in, which pretty much followed the rules of the real world. I love how Galaxy just takes the rulebook on physics, gravity and real world behaviour, spunks in it and throws it out of the window. My main delights in the game have been the parts where you jump over the edge of the world and end up on the other side of it instead of falling down. Or walking on spheres positioned close to each other, jumping up and then falling down on another sphere due to its gravity. And then, once you get used to it, you get chased, shot at and a timelimit imposed on you to keep the game flowing.

Maybe I should admit it might be 10/10 material after all :P

My current reaction to this game is that it is Defo better than Mario 64. The Level Design here is so complex and entertaining and trimmed of all fat, it's like an onslaught of original Ideas. SO much work has gone into this. Nintendo must have been working on the game FOR YEARS! It's so fucking stunning.

62 stars in now :P and the "final" Bowser Level has opened up. NO WAY am I venturing there till I got ALL the stars. :)

My wrist is really sore though.

Every planet has been a sight to behold so far, always original and throwing up something new to see and do......

.....but....I noticed the

Brown Leaf Galaxy

reuses the ENTIRE main planet from the First

Bee Galaxy

:(

Its Halo cut and past design back again! fuck this game! trading it!

lol ;)

The music is wonderful.

For some reason this reminds me of my early experiences with Zelda: LTTP on the Snes. Why? Well there's so much sense of wonder about it. Nintendo have re-invented Mario in a magical fashion. When first playing LTTP, it was all so new to me. I was in a constant state of awe. Same thing here - although I'm only 20 mins in due to Gym/food/watching end of awful England game.

THIS is more how they should have done Zelda.

have you tried again since? As I got a message before when I switched on my Wii saying that wiiconnect24 was down and to try again later.

Initially I have to say "fucking hell - this is a bit good innit"!!!

I'm so glad I didn't look a the previews etc. - the sheer "shine" (sorry!) this has - the sheer joyousness of the levels - the bombastic 'space opera finale' music just BURSTS out of the screen...

THIS is how games should be IMO - abstract JOYOUS escapism.

Whilst I can understand the need for things like COD4 - they're not 'games' really - hell, when I installed the COD4 demo I was thrown into his insane firefight with TONNES of bullets flying and my first reaction was just to find somewhere to hide - and I stayed there for quite some time wondering what to do next - that's a REAL combat simulator for sure :P

THIS - this is a game - it's things like this which must (or at least SHOULD) make a lot of people in games development think "Holy Shit what have I wasted my time on upto now..."

Is that even possible? I mean, I've heard people say you can't get all

120, right?

stars before 'finishing' it once. Even so: collecting the 100-coins-stars will probably be a huge pain in the ass. On some levels, I really can't get more than 10! Aside from that: with no opportunity to go back to a planet (yet?), you have to make sure to get EVERY coin on the first several planets.

That does add a lot to the game though :)

I'm shit at Mario, always have been but my initial impressions are that it's a fuck load less frustrating than Sunshine, I'm not fighting the camera or doing bullshit quests in the hub area (yet?), it can look amazing and the little planet levels are fantastic.

Rocky Road has provided me with my first taste of why I am shit at these games but I'm sure a clearer head tomorrow will see the final stretch cleared, and it's something I actually want to do.

Check your internet connection settings in Wii Options. Firmware updates have reset mine to the default (wrong) before...
