Super Mario Galaxy on the way for Wii

I think I've managed to skip all major spoilers and media as well. Not due to a strict approach to media downloads and self-constraint, but just because I didn't care that much. The game is now all the better for it.

I did precisely the same thing and feel precisely the same - lovely to not have any real expectations before going in - all so new and exciting.

I really enjoy picking up the star bits. There's something weirdly satisfying about it.

Agreed, and I think that's one point that may just have been a nod to Ratchet - hearing the tinkle of bolts as you magnetically attract them is oddly compulsive. It's the same with the star bits. Where they come into their own is when you're launching. Gives you something to do while you watch Mario swoop and glide to the next planetoid. Though I could just sit and watch his journeys all day, they look so beautiful. There's one early on which is absolutely stunning.

I'm stunned

like others here - I can't remember I felt the same sense of wonderment as I played a game. Maybe ToOT... maybe. But this... this is different. It re-writes the rules of platform gaming... it re-writes the rules of gaming. Just jumping off the edge of a planet and falling on the others side of it - it's so simple, but it's taken gaming about 25 years to get here.

Anyone who works in the gaming industry who doesn't appreciate this should be sacked.

I f$%king love Nintendo.

Sad thing is... it might be 10 years before we see another game like this.

enjoy it.

Can I just re-iterate...how sobering and dark and just less plain fun Zelda was compared to this BEAST of a game.

I hope I get to fly later in the game.

Half the genius of this game is the lack of backgrounds required. You've always got something on screen due to the spinnyness of the planetoids, and apart from that - star fields. Awesomely clever.

as much as I loved Zelda TP... this is in a different league.

as I said earlier, it's time for Shigsy to turn his attention to Zelda and Pikmin for the Wii.

(oh - and can we have Wind Waker/Phantom Hourglass style look please?)

I think we've got to be a bit cautious in overstating Miyamoto's input - While it was surely very valuable, I think the more hands-on game & level designers deserve the most credit here. This is an incredibly talented team by the looks of it, and Miyamoto overseeing the project was the icing on the cake.

Agreed. With Galaxy both Mario and Nintendo managed to completely reinvent themselves and create a new standard. Every Zelda game after Majora's Mask have been formulaic and stale in comparison.

If 'Iwata Aska' can be believed, it was actually Miyamoto who came up with these spherical gameworlds in the first place, while nobody of his staff believed in it at first.

don't get me wrong... the guys who did DKJB are very very talented... but, from what I've read at least, this has been Shigsy's big focus for the last while. Just the whole, "let's set it on small planets" is just.. and I don't want to devalue the word... genius.

Oh yeah, I know he came up with the concept (that's listed in the credits - and what an amazing, brilliant concept it is) but as far as I know he didn't actually go hands-on with the level design. He's clearly invaluable when at his peak, I just think that it's clearly taken a superb set of designers and programmers to create the game in general.

I'm 6 stars in and whilst it has been great in places I'm actually not feeling the little planetoid things, because of the camera it feels like playing a top down Mario. It's taking some getting used to, hopefully it'll click for me with a bit more playtime.

The hub world is also a little baffling to begin with, a lot less accessible than I was expecting.

Don't want to buck the positive trend of the thread, as already there's already been some genius moments... I just hope they continue!

Don't worry, it takes a little getting used to and both the game, the levels and the gameplay only get better.

For those asking about the 2 player side, in addition to scooping up the stars, player 2 can temporarily 'pause' any non-boss baddies for a few seconds by pointing at them and pressing A (I think). It actually makes a big difference on the odd levels with a lot of baddies. Player 2 can also make Mario jump by pointing and clicking on him. This can be really annoying.

Just spent a couple of hours with my eldest playing with me, and with her taking baddies out for me it really felt like a team effort.

Wonderful.

Yes ofcourse. But apparantly Miyamoto did a lot of playtesting and gave a lot of feedback and came up with a lot of ideas. But in the end it's obviously a team effort by very talented programmers, designers, an ace director and a legendary producer.

dunno - I'm only about 4 stars in so far (I've died a lot already!!) - I'm at the bee world and done the queen bee bit... but my favourite part so far has been the capsule with the gravity stuff going on. Bee world is as big as Mario 64 levels.

And here's a thing... I never finished Mario 64!

I'm still only 4 stars in... I had a prolonged period tonight where I couldn't play.

I've gone back to the very first galaxy to get the 3rd star.

I'm amazed... and yes... I *have* actually grinned. I'm astonished at what they've done with this game.

I don't want to finish it.

Fuck's sake, get a grip. It's good, but not even the best game this year, and nowhere near the best game ever.

I'm assuming you've finished it then?

I'm just a few stars in and I'm stunned.

What's better this year? Only Halo 3 comes close - but for sheer grinning like a loon enjoyment - after a few hours of play - this trumps it.

Getting this tommorow, do you think that GAME/Gamestation will have any copies? If not, there's always Asda and other places like it that never seem to run out of games.

there's tons on the shelves... have no fear.

IT'S OFFICIAL TEAM.

After 31 votes (1 *more* than Zelda TooT)... SMG makes it to number 1 on gamerankings.com.

It's the best game ever.

You're a shit fanboy. Stop looking at fucking gamerankings and play the bloody thing.

In other news, this is fantastic. And I quite dislike Mario games. It is like Super Mario Sunshine...but good!

You're 4 stars in and you're "amazed" and "stunned" - at what, exactly? So far you've played a platformer on spherical levels, what's the big deal? Serious question, because to me it was cute but nothing even approaching "stunning" or "amazing".
