Super Mario Galaxy on the way for Wii

Looks not that great to me. Mario 64 was alright but I never got into Mario Sunshine - I must have played for a couple of hours before I stopped and never went back. I can't help but think it's just going to be the same with various Wiimote things tacked on. I know people will say that it was designed with the remote in mind but I don't think it will suit all games. I worry that will be the case with most of the Wii's software though, Wii Sports type games = awesome, traditional style games = not so great.

Obviously I'll give it a go when it comes out but at the moment I'm not that taken with it.

Not at all a bitch against you, dude, but this sort of thinking frustrates me so much.

I have this feeling that if the Wii had been a traditional console with a normal joypad, people would still be absolutely fucking jizzing over Mario traversing the universe, playing with physics, running around a galaxy of mini-worlds, etc. It's a great, innovative concept, and yet critics can fall back on "tacked-on Wii controls". Really, what do they want? Blood?

I know what you mean though. I don't want blood - I want 'normal' controls for 'normal' games (see flicking the remote in Metal Slug to throw grenades - I appreciate that was a port though). I'll freely admit I'm basing this on what I think it will be like, it might be amazing and I hope it is.

I want to love it, but the controls are sticking point for me. For most genres the remote can add something. I don't see it for platformers at the moment.

Which part is a great, innovative concept though?

When did you play it?

I really am impressed with the visuals, certainly best looking wii game to date. I love mario games but the fact that they have called it "Super Mario Galaxy" is like them condoning "Super Mario Sunshine" which can only be a bad thing. Its like they are admiting its not a 'proper' mario game.

Though it does looks alot more fun then sunshine already.

I think 'tacked on Wii controls' could be a legitimate gripe for some up comingthird party games (Godfather/Scarface) but not for Nintendos flagship franchise.

Surely Mario, of all games, will be designed specifically for the Wii and its controller.

Well, I've just watched that video, all those people moaning that it's "all the same", "we've seen it all before"....seriously WTF! That looks amazing, a totally 3D platformer, you're upside down one minute, flying through space the next and it looks lovely. Cuh, some people.

OR linking it with SUPER MARIO 64. I'm not quite sure how you feel the Super Mario bit only links it with Sunshine.

So what are the "proper" Mario games?

Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros 2

Super Mario Bros 3

Super Mario World

Super Mario 64

Super Mario Sunshine

They're all super!

I think the graphics look decently solid - but it looks far too like the disorientating annoying planets section of Sonic Adventure 2. (I loved that game, but the planet level amongst some others made me want to hurt people).

Dont worry, it's not Sega developing this game :(

It just looks better and better every time I see it. And it shows how lazy other developers are being when you can coax graphics as nice as these from the Wii. This is the game which'll make me buy a Wii. Or at least stumble around town a full year after the launch trying to find a place that has any in stock...

It looks really good, and it's not often I say that about a modern game. I don't know if it's doing Clever Technical Things, but it's certainly really nicely designed, I'd even say it looks classy. Now, cover your ears: Art Direction. There, I said it, ban request me, if you must. But this game actually has some.

The latest trailer certainly sold me on the game better than it's earlier videos did. From the little I've seen, there's something about the vibe to it being out of the usual mario platforming universe which gels with me better than in Sunshine.

Yeah, good point. Even though it's set in space, it feels more like the beloved Mario setting than Sunshine, or even, I would argue, SM64. But they've managed to make it feel fresh; it's not just a straight retread of the Mushroom Kingdom.
