Super Mario Galaxy on the way for Wii

The pirate ship's in the trailer briefly at 1:00 in. Looks like the ship level on Mario 3.

That walkthrough video looked like a Mario Sunshine lost level to me, with the FLUDD replaced by a bee costume. Nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned, as I really enjoyed Sunshine (and the bee section is just a small part of Galaxy). But I didn't see that video as offering anything more than Sunshine, other than an irritating cursor whipping around the screen - which I'm sure won't be half as annoying when I'm in control of it.

But after my RE4 experiences I'm having to keep a tight lid on the part of me that wants to shout "I want to play it on a standard controller!" QUIET, YOU.

To me it just looks much more creative, polished and active than Mario Sunshine. There seems to be so many interesting things going on everywhere.

It looks like it's had real effort put in to it. Remember the tacked on Yoshi appearance in Sunshine where, if I remember correctly, all he could do was jump around the hub and vomit everywhere?

After the conference yesterday I debated Nintendo's commitment to 'true' video-gaming.

Mario Galaxy has proved me completely wrong. It looks just amazing.

This. Mario Galazy was seeming like a bit of a faraway dream, but then I saw the footage of Mario yesterday and I feel so excited. This game just seems to ooze personality.

show me another game other than those two that demonstrates the sheer level of imagination.

Mass Effect, a whole freaking galaxy of made up stuff. Most of which we haven't seen yet. You need imagination to create any form of entertaining media or you end up with Marine Sharpshooter III. Even then someone had to imagine up ways to make it really really bad. Why is a fat plumber in a bee suit any more "imaginative" than the rest of the stuff shown? It isn't, hell The Simpsons did it and even they copied someone else.

Sothen all the good stuff shown yesterday.

Rowan, rowan, rowan, rowan. Rowan. Get with the program. I'd hate for us to leave you behind on the side of the road, like a bag of recyclables. Really, we'd all feel terrible. For a bit.

the bit that I watched didn't even have a bee suit in it. It's the whole universe that they have... the planets, the vibrant colour - it just looks a joy.

not a gruff looking gray/green angry person in sight.

and? It doesn't take any more or less imagination to slap a rainbow on something. If every game looked like Mario Galaxy then it wouldn't be special and all the shooty bang bang games would be the imaginative ones.

Aaanyway, can we now at least accept perhaps Nintendo haven't abandoned the traditional gamers?

No, but let me put it this way: Mario Galaxy is one of those games I'll gladly buy a console for even if that's the only game I'll ever play on it.

Killzone 2 looked good - does that have more imagination than Mario Galaxy?

It's the fact that the whole, great looking, universe can be full with anything. That bee world is just the beginning, it shows that Nintendo can do everything now in that game. We're shown so many different stuff that almost everything else looks flat in comparison. The possibilities are endless, and it looks like Nintendo's exploring every one of them.

I'm not the one saying anything has used more imagitons than anything else. I'm saying it takes just as much imagination, skill and love for the project to create any piece of decent fictional entertainment.

That's not true. Not even close.

Of course it's true and that holds for any media. Oh wait of course, Nintendo are a Japanese company and everyone knows that only Japanese developers pour their heart and soul into games development. Sorry, I was wrong guys.

setting a game in a realistic environment - even if it's sci-fi - particularly if it's western - it'll still be grounded in some kind of reality. The most we'll see are funny coloured skys and odd looking aliens that'll still have two legs and two arms but maybe eye-stalks.

Mario throws out the rule book - you're platforming upside down in planets hollow planets with pirate ships floating in space...

... that's imagination.

Oh I see. Creating entirely new creatures from scratch, one might say from their imagination, doesn't count as being imaginative but putting a pirate ship in space does. Hmmmm.

Don't be daft. It's the quality of the work that counts, you can reduce it like that. Anyone could invent 'entirely new creatures' in the time it takes to write them down. That doesn't mean they will be any cop. Mario Galaxy is clearly very special no matter how you try to reduce it. It stands out amongst the dozens of other games shown this E3 - by a long way.

Of course which is why I qualified it as decent entertainment, not just a potato with big scary teeth and wobbly eyes walking around shitting on squirrels. Dur!

Can somebody delete all the posts from scottcr and beertiger from this thread? As Calashnikov says, it was such a lovely thread about such a lovely game before those two started arguing over nothing.

Bee gone.

Get it?

Man I wish this game was out now.

The glaring problem for me is that Mario can't fall to his death without you really trying to kill him (remote concession again), which removes a major element of danger from earlier versions. In the video above, we see a 'Too Bad' message when dying... Ominous.

Surely falling to your death is a bit of an outmoded concept anyway (see: limited lives). If you fail to make the jump, there are other mechanisms such as you falling to the ground and having to work your way back up again, which are much more fair and ultimately ensure you still have to get the jumps right in order to progress.

Let's be honest. Nintendo could have dressed Mario up in a suit made of shit and human faces and you'd have lapped it up.

"Shit-get!"
