lol that vid is awesome!

Does contain one thing I didn't like though; a 1up mushroom that you can't tell the position of. He even dies going for it. :)

Has Bowser already been confirmed as being the bad guy in SMG? If not, then consider it confirmed by the face that appears when you die.

When has he not been the bad guy? (except for SMB2, that doesn't count)

There's a screenshot about with Mario fighting Bowser in a very M64-looking fight. With nice fire effects.

EDIT: See?

I got so in to that video when the guy stood in front of the camera I thought Mario would die due to him blocking my view. What with bioshock, this, halo 3, metroid, assassins creed - I think the next few months could be a golden age of videogames.

that is pure void level... this is going to be absoloutely amazing.

I've 'trolled' about this before, but I'd rather have some vast landscapes than those void-type levels. SM64 had it so right.

This has mainly to do with me being crap and falling to my death numerous times in SMS's void levels. :(

Sorry man, that's it, you're just rubbish.

Games like Jak and Daxter, Rachet and Clank and all these other so called platformers, have these vast objective filled worlds to go muck about it, and the void levels go right back to what mario has at its core always been about, good platforming. Its why stuff like Super Mario Bros on the nes is still fun to play today, it looks shit ( I mean techinically obviously, the game itself still looks perfect for what it is) and has repetitve levels and running your way through it, trying not to die is still golden. The jump feels golden. Thats my personal reason why sunshine fell short for a lot of people due to having the extra complication of spraying stuff. Mario is about jumping around in the most fun aways- hence the void levels being loved in sunshine, bye bye Fludd! (I liked sunshine as a whole, but looking back, the void levels rocked and the spraying was crap)

The void levels are an extention of that, or of the videos of the guys playing through 64 really fast like acrobats (not the cheaty ones), just pure platforming,

There's a lot less falling (off the level) in this game. And you don't seem to get put back to the start when you do. That cookie cutter level looks a lot less daunting and a lot more fun than a typical void level - I'm crap at those too.

there's a few bits in that video where he just manages to pull himself back from the edge - it's clear that he's stepped over it but it looks as though the game gives you a chance if you're quick enough to pull it back.

this is a good thing

Aye, I can see that, and I see SMG's take into trying something fresh...something that harks back to platforming games gone by...

I just want a good reason to buy a Wii. Corruption would have been it, but that has turned into 'Metroid Prime: Lite' now, and I'm hoping that SMG doesn't go the same path of being 'lite' just for the sake of 'appealing to the non-gamer' that the Wii seems to attract.

So not all hope is lost for me yet?

For me Mario 64 invented a new genre where it was all about 'how do I get there?'. I'm sure there are earlier examples but it started with M64 for me. Sunshine continued that maginficently for the first 30 shines or so - the level design just went downhill after that IMO.

Galaxy seems to be more in the direction of the 2D platformers although it retains a lot of what made M64 so good. No bad thing, just an observation.

Like you I don't really consider J&D or R&C to be platformers at all. They are superbly engineered light-hearted shooters with jumping and very annoying characters. I think those games have run out of steam (at least judging from the latest R&C videos).

What I really like about Galaxy is that they seem to have looked at what is fun about SMB & M64 and tried to focus on that stuff while eliminating the annoying stuff (high difficulty in places, camera woes). Of course it introduces some proper new ideas of it's own too.

Mario 64 had a huge advantage on its back to really push it forward. And that was that 3D worlds in games was a relatively new thing - so with wonderful level design and lots of imagination, it was a wonderous experience. I remember being very young looking at screenshots of the area outside the castle thinking that I could spend hours in that particular area. That I could around the trees like a park. In fact, me being very young and stupid, I showed this to my mother who likes to go for walks in the then local park saying she could stay in once we got a N64. So I totally agree with you in the "how do I get there?" element, especially back then as we had never asked that question in a 3D realm before.

This is probably why I, like you John, think that Crackdown if anything is currently this gens platformer, since it does the "how do I get there?" so well.

I think Galaxy will be a mix of the void levels in sunshine and more condensed worlds like we faced in 64. The reason I say more condensed is that because thats how we will perceive it, back then those levels were huge in scope because of what we were used to, now they are more relavtivey smaller mini worlds to have a lot of fun in.

It'll be a nice mesh of how do I get there and let me push you to get there.

One of the things I miss in a lot of platform games is the 'combo-ing' needed to do certain things, even if it is just doing them quicker. Nothing like the feeling in a 2D mario platformer of getting up full speed and jumping for all you are worth landing on the smallest platforms only top do another leap of faith. Sonic demonstrated this feeling better in some places but sometimes seemed a little too quick.
