Metroid Prime: Corruption

I haven't finished it yet but it gets better, yeah I thought the whole marines thing at the beginning was pretty poor. Even Bryyo might not wow you but I thought Elysia was awesome. Maybe change the controls to Standard if you're getting sick. Worked for me and I don't mind moving my arms more.

I SAID NEW EFFECTS

When in scan mode, Samus' eyes look left or right as you turn. That's a new one.

Anyway, just landed at the first Seed thing on Bryyo. Bloody hell, it's freaking gorgeous isn't it? Seriously impressive stuff going on in this game. It's just absolutely beautiful to look at. It's like that fantasy artist from the seventies, did all the Yes covers and stuff... Peter someone or other I think. Amazing scenes.

One thing that does annoy me though... The scanning. Anyone having problems scanning little stiff when it's in front of big stuff that can also be scanned? I'm thinking the shriekbats that appear and swoop at you in front of the downed spaceship on Bryyo. It's just impossible to scan them at that point. I did get them elsewhere, but it seems more fiddly to scan the little stuff in this one. I think I preferred the little squares that you got in Prime. Oh, and I just scanned the gel eel thing that jumps and out of the gel. Nearly missed that one. Sneaky little shit.

Anyway, it's great stuff so far, and loving the inclusion of the grapple attacks and the bombing runs and the like. All good stuff.

You know I was thinking the same thing about the art style too. 'Yes' album covers and the iilustrations that used to adorn Psygnosis' covers back in the day...

I changed the control back to standard (obviously with lock/aim enabled) to see what it was like and I actually prefer it. Jumping across the landscape towards a door and I find it easier to shoot things from a distance when my head isn't actually moving around.

Medium sized bounding boxes FTW! It's more like Red Steel LOL.

.::: Though it's by no means bad, Corruption has now convinced me that the GC-control layout was perfect. I much prefer the clunkyness and predictability of those controls as opposed to the Remote. It doesn't feel gimmicky or something like that, just imprecise compared to the previous controls.

Hey guys, you know the radio in the space ship? Are there any cool stations you can pick up with it? LIke an EASTER EGG or soemthing as we call them in the world of video games.

.::: Maybe you should dig around in the thread a bit more. Or open gamefaqs.com. Or been alive since the US launch of the game. ;)

standing still to aim in Metroid Prime and Echoes is required in some bosses and is a royal PITA. Other than that, the control in previous metroids was spot on. The games were designed around the control system... However, there's now situations and basts in this game that couldn't feature in either of the previous games as they'd have been really frustrating with the old controls.

Beam stacking should've been in the games since the very beginning.

.::: No, but they shouldn't exist either, that is, not like this. This is the first first person game ever that seems to revel in its own smugness concerning precision aiming. Yes, we get the idea, it's been there for years and years, now move on instead of giving us umpteen versions of the same mini-game emphasizing your new found glory.

It's almost as bad as Sony introducing motion-control in the SIXAXIS, it's that level of unjust smugness and ultimately makes every enemy that requires it boring. The use of it isn't subtle at all.

There's a Radio in the space ship? :)

I messed around with the buttons & I enjoyed the amusing-but-pointless metal shields & corruption scan, but never noticed a Radio. Is it the thing you used at the start to transmit the clearance code?

I'm really enjoying this, and quickly approaching the end, but is anyone else noticing it makes their Wii rattle like crazy? I guess it's just constantly streaming stuff off the disc, but I hope my system's not on its way out.

I'm also noticing that in the second half, pretty much every damn door causes a 5 second loading delay.

Anyone else getting this shiz?

When you start over on the same save file you get to keep all your scans, which is a nice touch.

Ah, excellent, that means I can relax into my first play-through and not worry about missing one-time scans (I don't like starting whole new saves to go for 100%).

After experimenting with the options I prefer the Advanced sensitivity with freelook. I've never been that into shooters, but I like the fact that the option to have to aim is there so I have to be a relatively good shot, but that's not the emphasis of my activities & i'm still exploring, scanning for info & searching for items.

Why would anyone want to bother getting 100% of the scans?

edit : Bah I've just grown out of it that all. Its the same with the 120 stars in mario64, pointless but at the time it was really cool. Because I had all the time in the world.

.::: Whoever 'designed' the Energy Cells, is probably the same f*cker who 'designed' the Dark Temple Keys in Echoes. It's like getting another kick in the balls after the bizarro-intro...

I enjoyed those bits.

He probably means it's a bit of a fetch quest to lazily pad out the game play ala Triforce shards in Wind Waker. I suppose that's true to an extent, but I guess it depends on your play style.

I've got to the point where I now need the cells but I've only got 3 left to find, and I wasn't making any particular effort to uncover them. I'm looking forward to hunting them down, because I enjoy the atmosphere and the puzzle solving, but I'll bet lot's of folk will just be irritated by it.

Anyway, really positive impressions of the game. Iffy start, right enough, but it soon a tremendously satisfying and atmospheric experience. I do prefer the new controls (thought it took a while) and it's pretty too.

It's not quite the game Metroid Prime was, but I guess that's typical for a sequel. We've seen a lot of it before, so it'll never have the same impact again.

You don't need all of the cells. That alone means that it's not as bad as the fetch quests in the first two games. On my first playthrough, I had the five cells by the time I needed them. I wasn't going out to collect everything single item either.

Of course, the game would still be better without it.

Hmm, I see what people mean about it being a dodgy start and then it gets better. It's fun starting off with a decent set of abilities and getting some of the more fun ones (grapple etc. ) early on.

These "Lizardo" twats or whatever they're called can go screw themselves, though. Enemies which don't respond to taking damage are always assholes.

Well I've returned my copy, Im sure Ill pick one up again later but £30 for a game that made me nauseous is too much when I still have so many other uncompleted games at home, so Ill retry this wth some of the other control schemes once I see it knocked down to <£20
