Metroid Prime: Corruption

I re-read the Edge review and it's spot on really. The only thing wrong with it is that the caption for one of the screenshots claims that the "multiple-lock homing-missile launcher is the only variant that seems tailored to the new controller".

I never noticed this until I read it on NeoGAF but if you can open green doors you can

use your X-Ray Visor to kill Metroids, Metroid Hatchers and some Space Pirates with one shot

I guess I'm just finding all this "serious gamer" stuff very tedious lately. Even Final Fantasy 6 is pushing its luck and Zelda: TP was touch and go for a while. Since I started working again and no longer had 3 consecutive hours to play a game, I'm not sure I've touched either of those.

That takes me back to my playthrough of Zelda: TP. At first my girlfriend hated it whenever it was on... By the end she made me promise I wouldn't complete it without her being there.

The reason?

She wanted to see this 'Zelda' woman. She was absolute bemused that a game named after someone would feature them so infrequently...

/Completely of topic rambling over.

What did she think when she finally saw her?

First proper boss done. I love Metroid bosses. Just the right side of sheer frustration. Great game.

hmm - stuck on him at mo. A little too much frustration for me.

If you mess up your hypermodes you can easily end up on your last energy tank and then you're basically buggered!- not enough energy to go into hypermode, not enough drops from the baddie to top my energy up. (unless I'm missing something  )

You are missing something, I don't know which boss you're on but they all shit out power-ups.

Bryyo Seed boss. He occasionally fires out his jazz hands and they drop the odd energy ball and a pointless amount of missiles but not enough to recharge enough of my health.

Yeah I've been uniformly impressed with the bosses so far. It seems to mix up the fights well and they usually feel suitably epic.

Reasonably tough too, but I'd bet I'd struggle a bit more if I hadn't finished the bastard hard Echoes and it's bosses from hell.

Oh, and one for the old bastards among us. Did anyone else get a flashback of Captain Blood when they were messing about with the buttons in the ship?

Well it does take some patience. Took me 3 attempts, and around 20 mins to actually beat him. If you hang close to him and keep holding A to attract stray power then you'll get there. The narrow window to hit the 3/4 spot almost drove me nuts though. Last one is easier cos of the back turning routine he's in by then.

Impressed. Echoes was just too much for me, gave up on the fish boss, I just kept losing my way. Mind, I haven't finished this yet...

IMO Corruption's "Fetch Quest" is much more smoothly integrated into the game than it's eqivalent in Prime & Echoes. They're much easier to come across during the course of the game & you don't even need all of them.

Agreed, even though I seem to remember Prime 1 giving hints in the form of highlighted text for the room, Prime 2 was a bit cheeky with most keys being there in normal places, its just you needed a special 'visor' to see them. I haven't finished MP3's fetch quest yet but I'm enjoying going back every now and then and using what I have to see how much farther I can get into the

Valhalla

. It feels much more progressive.

I liked the bosses, but the "jump in the air, crash down creating a massive shockwave which has to be jumped over" got boring after the second or third time. I think literally every boss has a variation of it, it's incredible.

Helios didn't. You're right though, it is annoying.

You know, I love these games, and I know it's not a FSP as such, but there's something unsatisfying about firing lazer beams rather than hot lead.

I'd agree with that, but I don't really see how they could get around it. Although the game could do with a few less damage sponges.

There were certainly instances of really satisfying shooting, though, namely

blowing the steam bots off ledges with a charged shot, sending a missile into the middle of a group of them and watching the pieces scatter, or one-shotting enemies with the x-ray visor.

.

All in all the combat is a lot better than in the previous Primes, though. I actually enjoyed the shooting in Corruption rather than enduring it, at least for the most part.

It was brilliant in Prime how a Well-judged Charge shot or missile could send an enemy flying, ragdoll-style across the environment. In both Echoes & Corruption though, they just seem to soak them up & it's not as satisfying.
