<_< I played a guy from THQ last night (Butters) and he UTTERLY whooped my ass. I was still figuring out the UI really and was up to about 20,000 points... when he was on 800,000 :o

Then they came over the hill. Swarming. There was nothing we could do.

The giant flying cockroach was the worst :(

Do you need to be an industry guru to get in on this beta?

Yarr.

Having 'experienced' the beta in Skirmish mode with the AI hacked to function (it's disabled by default), I can safely say that this is going to be TA 1.5.

It plays like TA, kinda looks like TA, the AI behaves like the AI in TA.. I dunno if this is all because it's a beta or what.

The AI plays one of two ways:

1. Rushes you right from the start with millions of shite little units before you can get going properly.

2. Leaves you alone - save for the odd spy plane - letting you enjoy yourself by doing a bit of base building, a bit of exploring.. then... BAM! It attacks you with one of the 'experimental' units. IE that big spider-walker thing, or this thing that looks like a giant floating mechanical turd. Both of which are virtually invulnerable.

Quite annoying.

There are none of the 'zoomed out strategic battle planning' type moments eluded to in the gameplay videos floating around the net. The minimap isn't clickable, so you have to scroll around the main view to get focus on what's happening (even with the extreme zoom it's not as intuitive as a clickable minimap).

It chugs like an astmatic dog too. Again, prolly cos it's the beta.

Play it for an hour or so.. It chugs my friend.. I'm talking a frame rates of one frame every 1.5 seconds. It really really slows when there are a fair few units on the map.

Shame really, this afternoon I was doing quite well but ended up quitting due to extreme slowness.

I fed back the non-clickable minimap thing to the guy from THQ and he said they'd asked for that to be fixed a number of times. I think he's in QA.

So I'll be submitting another request for it via the bug reporting tool. You can quickly zoom out using the wheel but it's not the same, bit clunky.

downloaded the 2.0 version and discovered i could play, but there was no AI available. upgraded to 2.7, and now i can play with AI but it chugs unbelievably.

Same as Mr. Greedy says, one frame every 1.5s, along with bursts of sound. Very infuriating, and then usually crashes as well.

All i really wanted to do was build some nukes ;)

I'm aware of that, however the complaints about the optimisation were in my mind related to it being overly difficult to beat or playing in an annoying manner.

Not that the AI was responsible for hogging a huge amount of system resources, as seems to be the case.

That's what I meant, I thought I'd read an official comment along this line (and why they'd removed it in one of the patches as you said).

  • 3 weeks later...

So who else is on the Multiplayer beta for this?

Played for three hours against a mate last night, not really fighting each other, just trying out the units and trying to get a feel for it.

And the feel? It's like TA!

God I'm so excited about this. If anyone has any questions who couldn't get on the beta, ask away and I'll try to answer.

I downloaded a demo of this TA game the other night - I always thought it was something completely different!

It was interesting, but definitely of its time I think, most of the stuff in there has been implemented in just about every RTS subsequently.

Can it still be bought?

Edit - here's a question: how do I get on the freakin' beta?! How's that for a question?

The AI dificulty is largely based on the the dificulty levels being mislabled, apparently Easy is actually Hard and Medium is a lot easier.

The chugging is due to a bug to do with Soundblaster Audigy/X-Fi cards apparently, I suspect a memory leak somewhere as it tends to get worse and worse as the game goes on. I've heard starting the game with the /nosound switch fixes that but I've not tried it as I enjoy the sound too much ;)

I've upgraded my client to the latest v3.8 (although haven't played it for a month) so I cant play the AI anymore but if anyone fancies a game let me know, I'd rather play someone from here than a random who's going to finish me off in 2 seconds
