Supreme Commander

Downloaded all 1.2GB and tried my first game. Very smooth, lush graphics, no lag. As expected, I was soundly thrashed by a player named Barondevil. I was still wandering around building metal extractors and he already had masses of tanks streaming my way in under ten minutes!

I'd quite like in on that sweet, sweet download action too Robbo.

So in theory I should be able to sign up for a free Fileplanet account and get a key that way? Or are the developers offering them directly?

See the resource gathering buildings, how do they work? Do you have to build them in quantity and close to the resource on the map to harvest it faster? Also do the resources run out?

I'm just going on the TA demo I played by the way, so I'm just assuming they're the same.

The AI dificulty is largely based on the the dificulty levels being mislabled, apparently Easy is actually Hard and Medium is a lot easier.

Really?

Brilliant. I'll be playing this later on then.

So can you play a pirate version of this online in any way?

I keep getting 'Invalid Code' written in the image you have to put into the box to get your key. It said my AV software or something might be blocking it but I don't have it on/installed >_>

Don't take this the wrong way but THANK FUCK.

This is the same error I've been getting.

Even went as far as submitting a fault on their support website.

I'll update my fault to reflect this info in case they try and pan me off with "you need to contact yoru ISP as the problem lies with them".

Actually Tom, who is your ISP?

It's BT Yahoo, and they've blocked some sites elsewhere on the net before but I don't see why they'd do it with this. Maybe we're getting that message because there's too many people signing up right now, and it's just saying invalid to random people?

At least we're in it together. Solidarity!

That's fine, I'm on NTL, our ISPs are definitely not to blame.

I'd like to play this against someone that isn't going to just build shit like a crazy clicking motherfucker and then come & kick my arse all over the shop just when I'm trying to work out what the units actually do. That's been all 7 of my games on this so far. It's tres good though.

  • 1 month later...

Got 90% in PC Gamer this month.

The only real criticisms were how empty the environments are compared to CoH (gotta be expected really with a map that size) and it can be pretty hard to keep track of everything due to the amount going on.

How the hell is that a criticism? The whole point about SC is it's supposed to scale things up several notches from your traditional RTS. "Oh shit, I've been allowed to build more than I'm used to, this sucks". From the sounds of things, GPG have added some really nice interface controls that should helpfully breathe some life into the genre. Just because some reviewer can't get his micro sorted, doesn't mean that's a flaw in the game, for christ's sake.

Hardly anyone seems to know about Company of Heroes

It's a WWII 3D RTS but instead of being like all the other average ones from Germany it's made by Relic who did Dawn of War and it's actually really awesome. Has excellent, fluid gameplay which is well balanced and the game rewards good micro play. The physics system actually adds to the gameplay rather than being merely a graphical bonus, as units take cover behind any objects. It's definitely not a tank-rush game and requires some real thinking in each game. Check it out in the sales! [/plant]

Edit: what lemonfist said.

Back to Supreme Commander, it seems I tried getting the beta to work but it didn't, then I forgot about it. Do you think there will be a standalone demo of this?

Sorry that came across wrong... he says its the most demanding RTS he's played and that theres a massive amount of management, but he doesnt actually slate that as a criticism.

Although it will be to some people. Sounds good to me though .
