Finally got mine from ZOK, yay! Here are updates as they happen:

1 - Random, but cool, nice beats.

2 - Still as random, cept more 80's, reminds me of Yes a bit for some reason.

3 - Whats this? A poor man's streets seems like, he even says it in the track!

4 - Great track!

5 - Liked this as well.

6 - After the intro I thought it was gonna be some more hiphop, maybe even a bit gangstaaaaa!

7 - Reminds me a bit of that Antony and the Johnsons stuff. Don't really like this.

8 - Don't like this one either.

9 - This sounds like the The Weather Girls, not that I am at all that clued up on this type of music. Not my kind of thing really.

10 - Haha, is this the original I take it? Didn't actually know Take That's was a cover! Loooong as well isn't it?

11 - I like this, the lyrics less than the music, I reckon it would make a great instumental.

12 - Not my kind of thing really, but I like this, very listenable.

13 - One thumb up.

14 - Two thumbs up!

15 - Eak!

16 - Don't really know what to say about this, listenable I suppose, it's good, but again, not my kind of thing really

17 - Tres cool.

Overall quite a mix, a few of the tracks wern't quite to my taste, but I will be listening again I expect. Cheers

Oh and tracklist me up please! :P

Here you go:

Theme From The Planets - Dexter Wansel

The Smurf - Tyrone Brunson

Murda Rookies - DJ Quest (2003 DMC UK Mix Champion)

South Bronx - DJ Scott La Rock & KRS One

Glad you liked bits and pieces...I thought you might like the Gil Scott Heron Stuff for some reason!

Feedback for bph:

I wrote all of the below without a tracklist in front of me. I've just edited in the track names for the benefit of everyone else reading; and believe me, this CD would benefit everyone.

01. Charles May and Annette May Thomas - Keep My Baby Warm: Lovely. Soulful, harmonic, warm. Motown. Wow, she sounds fantastic. At first I thought this must be remastered, but then I noticed the distortion when she really gets going - This isn't straight off vinyl is it? (edit: this is a grower, and I loved it the first time).

This is from the Soul Sides compilation compiled by Oliver Wang who does the peerless Soul Sides blog. It's a grower as you say, I only really got it after listening a couple of times - everytime she sings "God bless his little Soul" with the strings circling around I well up like a massive girl.

02. Darondo - Didn't I: Getting the feeling this CD is going to be an education in soul, and I'm all for it. Can't place the voice. I know I will kick myself. Brilliant, obviously. Lots of distortion on the right channel towards the end. I begin to worry about my speakers.

I only found out about Darondo a couple of weeks ago, an exceptional singer. There's a reissued compilation of his stuff from the 70s which came out this year, apparently he only treated music as a hobby and spent most of his days driving around in a White Rolls Royce macking and pimping.

03. Betty Davis - Anti Love Song: Getting funky now. Hiss all over the top of the vocals. CD stop. Put in something else. Phew, it's the CD. We continue. I bet this would sound great live, but I'm just not feeling it. At the risk of doing a terrible disservice to a famed 70s artist, it reminds me of Macy Grey.

This is a bit of an acquired taste. I love her singing though, she purrs every word and the whole song is so sexually charged.

04. Onyx - Break It Loose (Part II): Back right on track. Great horns.

05. Highlighters Band - The Funky 16 Corners: Oww. Terrible clipping on the vocals  I'll stop going on about them now. This is tight as a bastard. Reminds me of early James Brown. Now he's screaming stuff. Must be James Brown?

It sounds that rough on the CD due to the source recording presumably (it's from the excellent Funky 16 Corners compilation on Stones Throw). The singer's got a similar bossy composer style to James Brown, he's doesn't really sing a great deal - it's all band instructions with the occasional scream thrown in for good measure. According to the album notes, the Highlighters Band only ever recorded 8 tracks despite being as tight as the proverbial.

I put a J-Rocc mix of some of the tracks from the compilation (as well as Cold Heat, which is also excellent) on my blog a week or two ago which you might like.

06. James Brown - I Can't Stand Myself (When You Touch Me) Pts. 1 & 2: Great continuity, quality is good too. Freshhhhhhhh. A real head nodder. Love it. Just what funk should be - never ending. Now I think this one is James Brown, but they can't both be. :/

James Brown is the man as far as I'm concerned. This track is all about the drumming for me, impossibly tight - the breakdown is great (especially as the Guitarist misses his mark and gets slightly scolded by James). If you haven't got it already, I can highly recommend Foundations of Funk which this track is from. Full of extended versions and extra parts to songs, I love it to bits.

07. Lee Fields - Let A Man Do What He Wanna Do: I heard the needle pop. I'm certain you're putting this together off your sizable funk/soul vinyl collection now. I wish I knew more about this music to be able to say something other than 'reminds me of James Brown'. I look forward to my education. This track is also amazing.

Surprisingly this is actually a contemporary record, Lee Fields was an overlooked soul singer from the 70s and recorded a new record on Desco Records in the late 90s. It's all done with old fashioned production techniques so it sounds like some lost classic.

08. Bill Withers - Harlem: Bill Withers? Crisp and wonderful and a pleasure. The strings don't sound quite right. There must be a story behind how this track was produced.

09. Ervin - Smoke: This just gets better and better.

10. The Fabulous Mark III - Pyscho (Pts 1 & 2): Wooo organ. Sharp and tight drumming. Amazing. Sounds like there's a bongo guy as well as the drummer? So funky. Now I'm up and popping around my room like a schoolgirl. Whoever this is, I'm sold. Tell me more?

I don't know much about this band I'm afraid to say, it's from the Texas Funk compilation on Now Again Records.

11. San Francisco T.K.O.'s - Acid Lady: What an intro. Oooh and it doesn't disappoint. What more can I say? Sublime.

12. Della Reese - Compared To What: What a voice. Lovely track. Never really gets going as I expected though.

I love the lyrics on this, from the subject matter it could easily have been written today. According to Wikipedia, Della Reese starred as B.A. Baracus' mother in the A-Team :(

13. Kay Robinson - The Lord Will Make A Way Some How Pts 1 & 2: Gospel wonderousness. Makes me want to sing along. Makes me sound like an idiot. I've heard the spoken part at the very end before, recently. Can't think where.

Apologies for the quality on this one, I only realised after I sent the CD off that it was ripped by myself a year or two back at 96kps  She's one of James Brown's Funky Diva's so the music is really tight, it just gets locked into a groove and doesn't let go. Can't help you on where it's been sampled I'm afraid.

14. Howard Lemon Singers - Let Him Come In: There is nothing wrong with this song. Uplifting, well rounded, exquisitely produced. What a delight.

This was a mix CD of astonishing brilliance. Robust, flowing, excellent. If it weren't for the sound quality issues at the start, people would think this was a shop bought compilation. You should have your own radio show. I dearly hope I never have to make you an album. Thank you.

Thanks, easily the most positive feedback I've ever got for one of my CDs. I spent a fair bit of time compiling it so I'm really glad you enjoyed listening to it as much as I did putting it together.

I really wish I could tell you more about some of the artists, many are relative unknowns and the track on the CD is the only thing I only own by them - I've added a couple of comments where I can add any info. Most of the tracks are from compilations I've picked up or albums I've bought as downloads from Emusic, I really love my Soul and Funk but beyond James Brown I don't know nearly enough about the artists.

Thanks for your comments :(

Feedback for Kelthink:

1) Quasimoto - Shroom Music Amazing, obv. Sounds a lot better on it's own rather than on the album, you don't fully appreciate how fucking wild it is until it's separated from the other insane Lord Quas tracks.

2) Is this the Super Furries? Nice summery vibe to it, would sound great at a festival I'd imagine.

3) Common - They Say Laidback goodness, just washes over you (in a good way).

4) ;) This is fantastic, I wouldn't even know how to begin to classify this - prog-polka ska metal?. Utterly hatstand.

5) Not so sure about this, very lo-fi start and it kinda drifts off once the main beat starts.

6) Hmm Red Hot Chilli Peppers, not a huge fan I'm afraid. They always sound to me that they should cut loose more than do, it all sounds a bit reigned in.

7) This is cool, great voice and some excellent dark acoustics.

8) Sounds like Beck, very ramshackle. I like!

9) N*E*R*D* - Run to The Sun Superb, I'd forgotten how good this is. Everything about it works perfectly.

10) Sweet harmonics. Another great track.

11) Didn't like this until the air-guitar friendly solo kicked in, then it went a bit meh again.

12) Someone doing playing their guitar in the Rainforest with some bass drops thrown in. Weirdly good.

13) Thought it was going to break off into Immigrant Song at the start with that little funk riff. Very Beta-Bandish and just as good (i.e. very). Edit: Not Immigrant Song but there's a Led Zeppelin song it sounds almost identical to at the start

14) Ugh, this sounds like Bryan Adams or someone. Next!

15) Likable mellow slice of electronica, kinda hypnotic. A winner.

16) Pretty good, some nice melodies flying around. Grohl?

17) Is this Janes Addiction? Sounds a lot like Perry Farrell but doesn't grab me at all, a bit plodding especially near the end.

18) Ooh, this is nifty - like a drunken spanish serenade. I wouldn't normally listen to this but still cool.

19) Oompah band hoedown spectacular. Great closer.

Thanks for the CD, some deliriously left-of-centre tracks in places which I'm all for with only a handful of skippables. There's stuff I'd look into further (especially Track 13) so a tracklisting would be tops :P

Received my CD this morning from Robbo, here's my feedback as I listen:

1. Nice track, i'm pretty sure it was in one of the Die Hard films, right?

2. I recognised it, but it didn't do much for me, i'm afraid.

3. Not too bad, though i'm generally not a David Bowie fan.

4. Pretty catchy, I like this one.

5. Again, not too bad, it's tolerable but I wouldn't chose to listen to it.

6. Didn't really like this one, but again it was tolerable.

7. I love the original of this, and the acoustic version was a very nice change.

8. A nice cover of the first track, I like.

9. Not a fan of this one, sorry.

10. This track is very good, it plays more to my tastes.

11. Likeable, but not as good as track 10.

12. Another one I'm not keen on, had to turn this off half way through.

13. Not much to it, but it fitted in well.

14. A nice way to end the CD, but not such a good standalone track.

Overall, a mixed bag with a few tracks that I liked from a genre that I don't usually take an interest in. I'll definitely be keeping a couple of the tracks, thanks. :D

A shame you're not a Bowie fan - I'm impressed you stuck through it. :D

01. Lovin' Spoonful - Summer in the City (Yeah, I think this was at the start of Die Hard 3)

02. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - [bBC Sessions] Sunshine of Your Love

03. David Bowie - [station To Station] Stay (bonus track)

04. Cake - Hem of your garment (A wonderful band, check out Fashion Nugget and Prolonging the magic)

05. Fun Lovin Criminals - Big Night Out

06. The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

07. The Cardigans - [Acoustic] My Favourite Game

08. Supergrass - Coffee Pot (You've missed this one out completely I think?)

09. Quincy Jones - Summer In The City

10. S.O.U.L. - Burning Spear

11. Kool & The Gang - Summer Madness

12. Herbie Hancock - Bring Down The Birds

13. Marlena Shaw - Woman Of The Ghetto

14. Bill Withers - I Can't Write Left Handed

Not as soulful as bph's awesomeness, but I tried to move towards soul and away from the guitar after the second Summer in the City. Thanks for the feedback. :D

Hi blackplastic. Thanks very much for your CD. It was enjoyable. Actually, parts of it were really enjoyable. Here are some words on some of the tracks that stuck out for me:

1. I really really liked this, or at least the central section of it. It's completely fascinating. The best bit of music I've heard in a month, I reckon. It's really sparse, with just a guitar line and some bells in the background and a bit of random percussion, and this amazing voice singing in Japanese (I think). I don't understand a word of it, of course, but it just goes to show how much effect you can wring out of a sparse melody and a human voice. I suppose because I don't understand what the guy's saying, the voice is really like another instrument. Anyway, this was gorgeous and moving and beautiful and I'm keen to know what it is.

3. This I have already. It's M83. I like their album for it's swooshy dramaticness, and this is a good example of that. I like the monologue as well, although I've no idea where it's from. It does set the tone.

7. Is this from that film? The one with Jessica Alba dancing, and Bruce Willis being hard? I never saw that film. Nice film music kind of tune though.

13. This was awesome. I thought it was maybe the Rapture or LCD Soundsystem at first. Then I realised I didn't have a clue who it was. I loved it, anyway.

14. This has a voiceover from Pi, doesn't it?

15. This also made me move around in my seat a little...

16. And this has a voiceover from 21 Grams. I seem to know the films better than the music.

Overall it was a really good mix. Probably the best one I've had so far. Nice mix of stuff, and I liked the film quotes idea. I couldn't work out half the time whether the quotes were part of the songs, or you'd mixed them into the music yourself, or both.

I would love to have a tracklist, plus also some of your thoughts on what you put on there.

Also, I wonder if tonymg got my CD yet...

ANewman... Glad you liked it, here's the tracklist:

  1. Asa-Chang and Jun Ray - Nigatsu
  2. Peter Wyngarde - Come In
  3. M83 - Car Chase Terror!
  4. Interlude - We are in a Tight Spot!
  5. DJ Shadow - You Can't Go Home Again
  6. DJ Hell - Tragic Picture Show
  7. Interlude - She Grew Up, She Filled Out
  8. Death in Vegas - Aisha
  9. Joy Division - She's Lost Control
  10. Interlude - De-virginized
  11. Prefuse 73 feat. Aesop Rock - Sabatical With Options
  12. Interlude - Everything's Wrong
  13. Blues Explosion - Mars Arizona (DFA Remix)
  14. Interlude - Mathmatics is the Language of Nature
  15. BT - The Fibonacci Sequence
  16. Interlude - How Much is 21 Grams?
  17. Warsawa Freedom - Breaking Free of the Atmosphere

If you like the Asa-Chang & Jun Ray track I suggest you check out their album Jun Ray Song Chang... It's absolutely fantastic, and absolutely unlike anything you'll have heard before. If you didn't recognise the album's intro that's actually taken from Killer7, as is the interlude after M83 and the bit between Death in Vegas and Joy Division.

Track 13 is a DFA remix, so you were halfway there. It's Blues Explosion, and I took it from the DFA Remixes volume One album, and as you say, it's awesome.

The films were as follows:

Bit between DJ Shadow and DJ Hell is from Lost Highway

Track 7 is, as you thought, from Sin City.

Tracks 10 and 12 are from Kids.

The other two you are as you said, Pi and 21 Grams.

As an aside the final track is a Joy Division cover made by my little brother, it's a little raw but I thought I through it in.

The CD was mixed using Audacity (Google it if you're interested)... It's basic, but it's free) and all of the quotes were mixed in by me (obviously some of them had bits of music in them already which I worked around). As I said before I has no real them this month, it has a lot of dis-embodied monologues and is kind of supposed to be about the bad things that men do, but I was basically trying to make something quite dark.

Glad you enjoyed it anyhow!

Also: I received Nimmel's CD (plus a bonus of Hip -Hop classics!) when I got home from work yesterday... Thoughts come soon.

My CD is on its way to Mr. Do, this month some 80's classics with a strong disco influence. I haven't got a tracklisting as I just dumped the tracks in Nero and pressed Burn, but I think most tracks are pretty well known anyway. If not, just describe them and I'll come up with the name.

Received the CD this morning, so I've given it a listen whilst eating my breakfast.

Art Of Noise - Paranoimia - I haven't heard this for quite a while now, so great to hear it again. I've always liked the Art Of Noise, and the Max Headroom film. So I love this.

Michael Jackson - Billy Jean - A Classic from Mr Jackson, and another tune from my school days in the 80's.

Madonna - Like A Virgin - I love early Madonna, and this is another classic tune. Got this on 7" with the sexy pic of Madonna on the bed. Great tune.

Prince - I Would Die 4 U - I don't know this Prince tune as much, as his songs from 1999 and Sign Of The Times. But this is again, another great track.

Peter Schilling - Major Tom - Well here is a new tune for me, at least I haven't heard it for bloody ages. Still, this is probably my favourite track on the CD. Great video for it, real 80's look!

Frankie Goes To Hollywoo - Relax - Classic! I loved Frankie during the early 80's, going on holiday and seeing all the Frankie Says T-Shirts everywhere. Plus I was banned from buying the record - seriously!

Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough - Another fantastic track from the 80's, and I love Depeche Mode.

Bananarama - Venus - Yay! More 80's classics. I love this, and everything else Bananarama released.

Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F - Thankfully the original and best version of the song.

Mr. Mister - Broken Wings - Not their biggest fan, but that didn't matter. As this is fab.

A-ha - Take On Me - Superb song! Especially with that sexy keyboard sound.

Dire Straits - Money For Nothing - Meh, never really been a fan of this or any Dire Straits songs. Not bad video though.

Run DMC - Walk This Way - Classic! Superb marriage of rock and rap, produced this great song.

Beastie Boys - No Sleep Till Brooklyn - I haven't heard the Licensed to Ill for years now, time to correct that mistake. Great track :)

Mel & Kim - Showing Out - Another ace tune I've got on 7", yeah I really loved the 80's. This great pop song was part of it.

Paula Abdul - Opposites Attract - Cheese Factor 7, well nearly anyway. Not as good as Madonna, but always nice to hear now and again.

Salt-N-Pepa - Push It - Not bad for what was originally a b-side! Before being remixed and released as a single.

Yello - Oh Yeah - another tune I don't mind hearing now and then. Ok tune, but one that I wouldn't rush to buy.

Jan Hammer - Crockett's Theme - So good it's got a thread of it own, in this very forum :)

Cheers Napole0n, I loved the music from the 80's. So I loved this CD mix :(

This I will definitely check out. This song was amazing, and as you say quite unusual sounding, which I always find more satisfying. I mean it's more satisfying to find stuff that sounds different/original but is still really good music.

The CD was mixed using Audacity (Google it if you're interested)... It's basic, but it's free) and all of the quotes were mixed in by me (obviously some of them had bits of music in them already which I worked around).

I have Audacity, but I didn't realise you could do so much with it (mixing, and setting track breaks and so on). I need to get to grips with it a bit, I think.

Thanks again for the mix, and the tracklist/feedback. Much appreciated. :)

To be honest it's very basic. Mixing can be achieved through a combination of tempo changes and fades.

There's no easy way to insert track marks. I always make one long mix and then cut and paste each track into a new file and export. It's very long winded but it works!

Rightoh, tracklisting for the "silly" CD. As you might imagine, this is a collection of the silly and odd stuff in my large pile of CDs...

1. Everybody Up! - Glam Metal Detectives. A shame that, in giving songs Old TV Programmes / 10, you didn't spot the old TV programme... am I the only person that watched it?

2. Viva La Megababes - Shampoo. A single I picked up in an Oxfam music shop for about 20p, but I really ought to get the album, they're great driving music :(

3. Hanging Around - Me Me Me. Short-lived solo project by that bass player from Blur and someone else.

4. Dance This Mess Around - B52s. The ultimate silly band!

5. Burning Radio - The Odd Couple. A few of the tracks on here are off some sampler CD I've had for years, made by a bunch of bands round Coventry. No idea who any of them are, I just quite like some of it.

6. Ooh La La - The Wiseguys. Sorry! I like it, anyway.

7. Someone Always Gets There First - Bennet. Yet another band only I've ever heard of - I saw them supporting some band or other in the early 90s and as far as I know only released one single.

8. Vaseline - Elastica. Best sub-90-second song ever.

9. Dragging My Heels - The Hypocrites. Another Coventry band.

10. Wanker (live) - Bennet. B-side of number 7.

11. Armchair Anarchist - Kingmaker. I can thoroughly recommend the album this is on, although as usual my CDs are in such disorder I can't find it again...

12. High Life - The Low. Last of the Coventry bands. Hence the less-than-great production! Nice little tune though.

13. Dogmanaut 2000 (Is there anyone out there) - Frigid Vinegar. Again, sorry - I just happened to be going through random boxes of old CDs and it jumped out at me. My brother and I used to love this ;)

14. Fucking in Rhythm & Sorrow - The Sugarcubes. Bjork at her best shoutiness :(

So yep, it's a pretty random collection this time, hence the slightly more serious other CD. If you liked at least one of them I suppose it's a success... :(
