Rhythm Tengoku

It's marginally less import friendly, as some games take a few goes before you figure out what to do.

@ Let's measure - The other issue is the fact that quickly pressing something with your thumb is more instinctive than moving your full hand with the stylus. <_<

I should add that it's still well worth getting, but I never thought I'd be visiting the coffee shop to skip a stage.

Firstly, I can see why, as a seasoned gamer, you'd find button pressing more instinctual, but as someone who likes to mess around on real-life drums myself, I find that tapping beats with the stylus quickly became second nature, even if it doesn't rely on the same type of wrist action as real drums. So as with most things, milage may vary etc.

As for the cafe skip - I did that once by accident while I was exploring mini games to keep me from the frustration of the level I was stuck on,

the second black/white syncopation level,

but then I immediately went "WHAAAAAAAAAAT?! NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!" and redoubled my efforts to pass it. Now way was some stupid level going to be hanging over my head, laughing at me. Nice that they put it in there - I'm glad I didn't discover it until after the

second table tennis game and remix 8

, otherwise I would have been sorely sorely tempted.

The two levels you've spoilered there I genuinely couldn't do. I don't know whether it's my DS and the touchscreen's not quite right, but I'm convinced that it wasn't reading some of my flicks. Passed everything else (the stage you skipped I did second go), it's just those two. But having said that, there are others that I'm sure I won't be able to perfect.

Yeah, I'm sure some people are going to get the hang of this really easily while for others (like me!), it's going to take a small brain reconfiguration on our part just to get comfortable with the controls. But one consideration that H. Canton brings up is the frustration factor in this one - as you say, Tengoku GBA was a right blast to play but on a couple of games in Gold I've been pretty close to chucking my DS across the room.

Mine came today, so far it's not too bad though because I played the GBA one the impact isn't quite as great this time around. I don't have a problem with tapping flicking, not this far in anyway (onto second set of songs). The music is superb as ever, and generally it's all good fun. Worth owning, I'd say.

So the US version, will they do an Elite Beat Agents and 'westernise' the songs? I'm guessing they'll cut some but keep others.

Whilst I've not had a problem with the touchscreen control, there have been times when it hasn't registered my flick, thinking it's a tap. Perhaps with continued play, and being more confident about the song, this becomes less of a problem but it could be more of an issue if you're used to pressing buttons.

I'm really not sure about this :) I want to love it but I'm very ambivalent towards it. I think it's going to end up in the trading folder

On another note, could one of you lovely people PM me a link to the soundtrack or even megaupload it to me. I'd be very grateful :)

It really isn't as accessible/fun/plain good as the first one and for that I'm disappointed. For every good game like the Ouendan drumming one, there's a bloody Uraomote black and white dudes to drive you up the wall. It undoubtedly works best when there's only tapping involved and I'm beginning to have doubts as to whether holding or sliding should have been included at all. Plus the Remixes are rubbish.

The awesome style and sense of humour are still there, but this is obviously going to have much less of an impact if you've played the original to death. The only game to truly make me LOL was the frog quartet one.

When I turn it on I get three blue choices which I assume are the save slots. But then when you choose one you get12 or so orange squares. What exactly am I picking here? I just did the top left and started playing.

You're picking the person you are - 'boy', 'girl', 'grandma' etc.

Check Ntsc-uk, they have a translation of the menus.

Finally completed the last four sections - turned out to be an exercise in frustration more than anything else. I can't see myself replaying many of the levels again.

The purity of the first game seems to have been lost, with less occasions where I've simply concentrated on the music and followed a beat. Most of the time is spent worrying whether the next swipe will constitute as a valid one. The music doesn't seem as tightly integrated into the games, but maybe that's because my attentions are so focused on the physical demands of the stylus. Instead of the harder levels become more intricate, they simply become faster, and combined with the swiping it becomes a test of patience more than anything.

Also the remixes aren't as good - in RT the mini-games always felt like they were almost designed with the remixes in mind, in this it seems like they play out to some fairly inconsequential soundtrack. Plus it has some fairly cheap memory tricks (the ninth remix being a particular culprit).

It's a shame as I think some of the individual music tracks are brilliant, it's funnier than the original, and it still has that certain charm of RT. Just nothing on the scale of the bouncy-man-in-space I'm afraid.

Disagree with almost everything there, I thought the drummer was one of the weaker games but black and white dudes were great once you got the hang of them. Sliding works just peachy and the remixes are all good to outstanding. I think I actually prefer this to the original. Heresy, I'm sure.

Yep, I just about agree with all that. I still hum the remixes from the original every now and again, and despite the fact that I've played this much more recently, I can't bring any of these to mind. And while it is probably slightly funnier, it's a shame there aren't more tricks to put you off your beat like there were in the original. But then again, that would make this - much tougher - game even more frustrating.

All Michael's (joypod) ranting about this convinced me to give it a go as I normally love rhythm games. But holy crap, I really just can't beat the second level with the 3 guys singing. I've probably tried it about 40 odd times now, and never once have I been able to get the timing right on the all 3 at once bits. It's a shame as I loved the first level, but just can't seem to do this one no matter how much I try.

I had the same problem, but I hadn't realised that it wants you to flick the stylus on the three occasions when the little dudes open their mouths wide rather than just lift the stylus off the screen like you do for all the other sections.

Is that the all 3 at once bits that I can never actually pass without them frowning at me?

Passed it with Gold. I love you, now I can get on with loving the game.

This really is brilliant, played it to death on hols. If I can find the cart I'll go back to the first but I don't think this is any less accessible once you realise that everything is either tap, press or flick (or a combination) bar one odd instance near the end, and working out exactly what to do only takes a minute and is half the joy. Most (if not all?) of the games can be done with your eyes shut and even the seemingly impossible ones are only as simple as listening to the beat and the audio cues. I think the only complaint about timings or whatever I have is with the robots in remix 1, I've got 46 golds and 17 perfects but that one gives me no end of trouble every sodding time. Overall, rhythm out of 10.

How would you get past the tutorial without knowing you had to flick?

The flick you have to do is so small you might not notice you're doing it, and given you don't have to do three in a row you'll pass eventually. I only realised when I saw the other half playing the level, I guess you don't need to hit them all to get a pass in the level proper.

I can't get the timing of the three dudes singing right at all. I kinda fudge my way through the tutorial and can't pass the proper game.

It's really frustrating me as I just want to play the other games. Any tips at all?

I guess I just have no rhythm! :)

It seems a lot of people have problems with this, myself included. A general tip is to do do everything slightly later than you think you need to, but you'll get the timing easy enough.

The important thing is the flick on the three "all together" parts (when the guys open their mouths extra wide). I skipped the tutorial after the first section and was just lifting off with the stylus. After I figured out that I needed to flick I did it straight away. That level seems to allow you three errors, so if you nail at least one of the "all togethers" then you should sail through .... unless you really do have no rhythm, in which case you'd probably better quit now and buy a different game :)

Hehe. Thanks for the tips. I can do the first game really well, it's just this bloody one! I figured the flicking I just cant seem to get the timing on the other bits. Useless. Grrr. I guess I just need to keep at it. Or get Ed to do it for me.
