Theres a Iwata Roundtable about the francise, just about to read it - there normally worth some time

here

That was great.

Despite being a huge fan of the GBA title and Tsunku (for W if nothing else), I had no idea of their connection until a few days ago.

.::: Picked it up as Rhythm Paradise over here, yesterday. Kind of cheap (€27/£24), as it was released in the Touch! Generations price-range.

Though I'm not certain it actually belongs there being promoted partially as a casual game. It gets quite 'core' rather quickly. Glee Club almost had me in tears and even now I consider it to be a rather difficult assignment (sixteen games in). The flicking also seems... odd. It's great at times, but during something like Rhythm Rally it seems to become anal about execution, while during crop stomp it seems far too lenient.

I find it to be less 'learnable' than Elite Beat Agents/Ouendan. That's mainly because it changes the mini-games around, while in the latter you're constantly doing the same thing in growing complexity. The premise is terrific, I just can't see it winning over the casual market as it's rather complex and not at all that easy to start with. EBA had way more visual cues, while the visual cues in Rhythm Paradise can and will screw you over. A lot of the games are easier when you close your eyes and just listen. Combined with the Nazi-like rating-system at the end of each game it's definitely not comforting to beginners.

Despite that I'm loving it and it's perfect for quick rounds in between stuff.

PS: Maybe a topic-title edit is in order?

Mm, whilst I wasn't as taken with it as I was with the GBA original, I have been using the UK release as an excuse to replay this, and when I stop subconsciously comparing the two and enjoy it for what it is, it's quite good fun. I agree that it's not the most accessible thing - in tying the minigames to the song's rhythm, it puts more demand on skillful timing than your typical minigame compendium - but when you get it and the visual accomplishment synchronizes with the soundtrack, it's really satisfying.

Oh, and I think my current favourite minigames are Munchy Monk - just for being so flat-out bonkers - and DJ School - "scratcho...hey!"

So, any tips for Rhythm Rally 1? It just doesn't seem to work - the flick only registers half the time and the fast balls are just too fast. I love the rest of the game but I want to get past this piece of shit.

.::: I have the same problem. I can only reach OKs there and only when lucky. I've spend my entire morning commute on the damned thing and it seems broken. Or it is incredibly anal about precision.

I tried both 'prepared' flicks (By already holding down to start) and instant flicks (stylus off the screen until flick). But nothing seems to help. It just randomly decides whether you hit the ball or not... Or at the very least is very convincing in making you think that.

Don't press and flick, only flick quickly throughout. It sounds stupid, but flick it in relation to the batting action on-screen.

For RR I always press and flick, as soon as I've flicked I'm pressing again in readiness for the next. The girlfriend struggled with this one for ages but then something clicked and she's golded it and the harder version of it too, it may well be one of those where you're better off not looking at it at all.

And no game should be a game breaker, you can just skip to the next game

via the cafe

if you want to come back to it.

Genuinely, I never noticed any problems with the flicking. In fact the only game that drove me nuts was the Lockstep one where you had to switch between on and off beat tapping.

I love that one! :(

Joyrex: You don't seem to like anything at all recently.

:P You are a kinda right, my gaming mojo is at a bit of a low point.

But I posted a lotta love in the Dead Space, Fallout 3 and even Saints Row 2 threads. So I'm not 100% dead inside. Yet.

I don't think this game is for me, that much is true.

Nothing to see here, move on.

.::: To be honest, the more I play it, the more it starts to grate. Getting a perfect on Crop Stomp, only to find it wasn't registered because the game didn't SAY TO GET A PERFECT, was... well I don't really have words for it.

It's like a drill-sergeant, and while at times that's excellent (see Ouendan) the game's overly faux-friendly tone only manages to annoy me because of it. "Oh that was great! Nice timing!" followed by TRY AGAIN.

The game has issues, and frankly It's losing its shine really quickly now.

That's the game rather than the tech, though. It shouldn't be asking you to flick.

Yep it's poor game design, not a hardware flaw.

Despite my dislike of Rhythm Rally I have still been really enjoying it. Seemingly I'm awful at as I have still yet to get to Tier 3 and have had to skip both Rhythm Rally and Shoot 'Em Up.

.::: Shoot-'em-up was piss-easy. I perfected it on my first go. That is, if the game would bother to register perfects outside of its stupid rule-set.

I suppose you want the mic to recognise your pitch perfect humming as well.

.::: Eh? I'm not sure what you're talking about. I'm just seriously annoyed that getting a perfect in a mini-game will not be registered by the game unless it specifically challenges you with a "Go for a perfect!" and then suddenly introduces a limited amount of tries only to disappear as you fail, so you can wait for the next random perfect encounter to pop up.

It feels cheap and doesn't promote practicing a game. Playing Rhythm Race ten times will only produce a perfect chance on Crop Stomp for some obscure reason. The f*cking thing is, I already scored a perfect on Crop Stomp a few days ago, even got the perfect-graphic with the last turnip, but nooo~... The game didn't ask me for a perfect, so I only get a Superb and have to do it all over again when the game decides it wants to hear it.

That is rubbish. Period.

The game is good, but some stuff in it is just infuriating.

I think it's a really good system that gives it more longevity - the more games you gold, the more likely you are to get a perfect attempt on one (the choice of which is random, but get all gold and you'll be getting another perfect opportunity after the previous one is over), so you're encouraged to get golds on everything and also be familiar enough with all games so that you're ready for any perfect run. If you've managed a perfect at one point before you were "supposed to" then if you know the game well enough you can do it again when it does come up. If you can't then you've not practiced enough, so saying it isn't promoting practicing is wrong.

Yeah I have no problems with the system. The first Rhythm Tengoku had the same thing and I managed to get a perfect on all but a few games. I can ace some of the games on the first try but when it comes to doing it for the Perfect! sometimes I just fall to pieces. I kinda like the extra pressure it puts on you and gives you a greater sense of achievement imo.

oh my bad, completely misunderstood you! I thought you meant registering perfect input timing. Yes, I completely agree agree with you, it is very much annoying.
