Big Brain Academy

Picked this up at the weekend for £18. At the price I thought it was worth a shot. Seems quite nice. I have a big ole healthy brain already, which is nice in my advancing years. I quite like presentation of it, all the Miis wandering around in the hallway, my girlfriend was most pleased to see herself chatting and laughing with Jack Black. Also, love the faces your Miis pull when you're doing that board game thing and trying to think of the answer. Aye, pleasantly enjoyable.

I've had the Wii since launch to much dis-interest from the GF generally (then again, I don't think Zelda and Resi 4 would have helped convince her) and a mate of hers has got it and she's now more interested and after seeing Brain Training ad said she would probably play it a bit if i had it - I'll convert her yet!

I had a go on this round my mate's house - I got 1400g ('Consultant') on the initial test, and it seems to be a laugh in multiplayer. The 'sprint' mode is especially frantic, to the point where I managed to drop the remote during a few frantic baton passes . There are far fewer minigames than I expected, although I've never played the DS version so the only comparisons I had were things like Mario Party and Wario Ware.

A- 1645g I think. Erm, can't remember the brain categorisation.

There's some games on there which I just can't do well. That orange Identify one where you make shapes out of pieces is a nightmare and the shadows is a bastard too.

shadows, you BASTARDS!!!

4 of them. sitting in the middle of the screen. spinning very fast.

WTF!?!

Is there a handicap on the multiplayer?

I have a top weight of 2233g on the DS version, so the chances of getting anyone to play this against me on a level playing field are virtually nil . A handicap would make it an essential purchase, though.

There aren't user selectable handicaps, as far as I remember. It might make the game a bit harder for you automatically based on how well you've done in the testing though.

I picked this up at the weekend with a bit of left over store credit. I only got a C in my first test but I've moved up to a B already. I've found the practice mode (with the medals) quite addictive which has helped with my improvement. I've got medals for everything up to hard but not all gold yet, although there are a few platinums, and on the train track one I discovered

you open up "expert" difficulty by getting golds on easy, medium and hard

.

We had a great family multiplayer session on Sunday afternoon - playing in two teams with a parent in each, it worked out really well. And I like the way the online side is implemented. I'm now locked in brain combat with scottcr, dinsdale and harlowlad. Good stuff.

And I suppose it goes without saying that the presentation is excellent, from the simplicity and accessibility of the screens to the cel-shaded Miis wandering about. It has that intangible Nintendo polish despite looking nothing like any other Nintendo game. I think this one's a keeper.
