Wasn't that Burnout Takedown?

maybe that too but…

An innovative feature in the game is that rival drivers can be pressured into driving errors by consistently attacking them on the circuit, just as is seen in real-life racing across the world. A progressing bar (not seen in real-life, natch) above their car displays their level of worry, with them backing off completely upon completion of this bar. This, of course, means that they are less likely to cave into pressure on the next encounter, although they will be more hostile towards attempts to overtake.

You are sitting in an arcade, at a ridge racer machine. You put a coin in the slot but the machine does not respond. A zombie hand reaches out and grabs your shoulder! If you ignore it and repeatedly insert the same coin again, go to page 43

If you want to see what the deal is with the zombie hand go to page 8.

43! 43!

This time, the machine accepts the coin. You sense a sudden change. You feel very aware of your surroundings, as if you have been summoned back to reality, awake after a long and confusing nightmare. The zombie hand disappears as though it never existed.

You sit in the toy car waiting on the imaginary tarmac for your game to start, and you think about the last fifteen years of your life. You think of how young you were then, the future you were unaware of. You try to think what you have done with your life. What exactly did you do? Surely you weren't playing video games the entire time. You think of all the opportunities you had, and how you wasted them. All the possibilities that are no longer there. All of the doors are closed. You didn't notice them closing at the time, but from here you can clearly see that they did close, and you struggle to imagine when that was. What was the precise moment that your fate was sealed? When did your future die?

You screech slowly off the starting line. The other cars disappear into the distance. You're never going to catch up with them. Everyone is long gone, and they're not coming back for you. You can't have the last fifteen years back. The game is meaningless to you now. The bright colours and loud music pass through you like the wind blowing through a barbed wire fence. The game can't bring back the past, and it won't improve your future. But you play on anyway, lagging so far behind the competition that it's as if you don't exist. What else can you do? It's RIIDDDDGGGEEE RACCCCEEEERRRRRR!!!

I completely forgot about R:Racing. What a weird thing that was. All I remember is the cracking intro with the girl racing in an ambulance 😃

edit: no wait, that's not it... None of the footage I see on YouTube matches what I remember 🙄

I forgot how nice the Vita version looks. Most modes are rubbish now (no online functionality AT ALL), but just racing in Arcade is fantastic. Biggest downside: all of the dlc has to be downloaded one by one. And you really do want DLC, the base game is incredibly bare with like 3 tracks.

I watched that DF video yesterday. I didn’t care too much for the mobile and pachinko games but the Ridge Racer 6/7 comparisons were very interesting. I can’t remember ever seeing a copy of Ridge 6 in the wild but I dug out my copy of Ridge 7 from the garage and set up my PS3 last night. I had a save file with one race completed, which explains why I didn’t remember playing it before. I played through the first few GP’s and it looks and plays very well - much like the PSP game, as mentioned in the video.

I did really like the white/black/green colour scheme of the menu in Ridge 6 to match the Xbox 360 colours. But otherwise the PS3 game seemed to have a much nicer art style. The tracks looked a bit dark and drab in 6 compared to the improved lighting and textures in 7.

I've got Ridge Racer 6, but I don't remember buying it or ever really playing it. Revisiting it on Series X is interesting, because I can see why I was put off - the single player mode is somewhat daunting, with the tube map-style network of hundreds of races stretching out in front of you into eternity. The racing is fun, but the sheer size of the task is a bit oppressive - it's like having a chart of every cup of tea you will ever have laid out in front of you, with each one being ticked off as you drink it. Individually nice, but collectively a bit depressing. That said, quick resume and the negligible loading times will mean its easier to dip in and out of.

I quite like the look of the game - the desaturated, clean look reminds me of Ridge Racer 4, although it also looks a bit more cold and stark. The tracks are pretty good too, although I did one which was 10% driving through a nice-looking night-time city and 90% driving through a featureless tunnel, which was pretty boring.

What’s the deal with Ridge 7. I’ve won the first few GP’s and events with just the basic car, no upgrades. But now I’ve moved up to category 3 machines I’m finding it more difficult to win. Should I be upgrading car parts or buying nitros? What’s best? Are credits used for anything other than upgrades?

  • 1 month later...

Bought $10 US store credit to play Ridge 6 on Series S, changed the region on console to USA and downloaded it. Unfortunately seems like the region has to be set to USA for the game to launch. Not a dealbreaker but worth mentioning in case anyone else is considering it

Got myself a PS3 slim today so I’ve been playing the best reason to still own the console. Ridge Racer 7 is still gorgeous in all honesty just don’t look too close or you’ll see the stitches.

RR games in general are lookers, I bet V with good upscaling and anti-aliasing is up there also.

Shame to hear that 6 is going through a price hike due to B/C but it being supported is still an overall win.
