GTA:IV Official Thread

I did, that's why I came to this one because your posts made me want to do violent things to cute kittens.

^_^

Anyway, if you are weighing up the 2 formats and you play online or plan to play this online, there's only 1 way to go really.

There's a world of difference between Xbox Live and PSN.

Mods? The idea was to keep this kind of stuff out of the official thread.

As the guy who asked a perfectly pertinent question about Grand Theft Auto in the Grand Theft Auto thread pointed out - the other one is getting hard to take very seriously.

Right, I'm pretty much ready for this to come out now. We've had pretty much all the info we're going to get until the reviews come out (which I will be mostly avoiding, scores aside).

So, to fill in the final three weeks, I'm going to be watching some urban thrillers/action films to get me in the mood, and give me some ideas of fun stuff to do in Liberty City. I've already watched Crank, which is basically a film version of GTA.

Here's some more:

Heat (and indeed Collateral and Miami Vice) - with Michael Mann, the city is the star. The ultimate urban thrillers, and with Heat, the ultimate city-based gun battle.

The French Connection - NY set and with two of the best chases in cinema history - one in-car, one on-foot.

Any others for my list? The Bourne Ultimatum might have made it if I hadn't just watched it, thanks to its wicked NYC-based car chase. Driving off a roof? Check. Shooting out of car windows? Check. Nicking a squad car from under the cops' noses? Check.

What about Ronin?

Totally the wrong location but big gunfights, heists, mental car chases, ambushes and "them pesky Russians" throughout.

True, that's a good one because of all the hiding behind cars, heavy weaponry etc. I just dismissed it because it's set in France ^_^

Just read some fantastic multiplayer info. It looks like that 6 month delay really allowed them to make it completely comprehensive and customisable:

New strategies are created by the addition of enemy blips and the cover system, enabled by pressing the right shoulder button. Enemies show on screen while moving and disappear when stationary. The amount of times I snuck up and shot an enemy dead was matched by the times opponents jumped from hiding to tan my behind. I also was able to tweak the reticule width, gamertag display, weather type, daytime, and control even voice chat options.

However, with friendly fire off, I take no damage if an ally shoots a rocket at my feet to launch me in the air and onto a roof. Call it co-op rocket jumps. The only caution is that no one is immune to gravity. Jump over a building (instead of onto it) and the landing could kill you.

While the game allows you to select parts of the map to play in, choosing specific boroughs, smaller neighborhoods, or areas like the airport, it doesn't prevent players from roaming the entire city during any given match. Instead the respawns and weapon drops only occur in those areas.

If you're playing with just knives, things are going to become stealthy, so another useful option is to turn off player markers that appear over people's heads and also turn off people's locations on radar. You can also turn the Police on or off and toggle auto-aim on or off.

If the driver is killed, a passenger can simply press Y to take over the driving. And, straying from GTA IV singleplayer's physical world, each player can choose radio stations independently of everyone else in the car.

Cheep cheep!

Fucking sweet.

Wow, great stuff. Glad they're allowing so much customisation. I'd love to play Mafiya Work with all enemy locators turned off (radar, overhead names, auto-lock).

As you approach the mission target, the enemy team could be anywhere! They could be tailing you from a safe distance or driving around slowly, trying to blend in with the other traffic, waiting for the chance to take you out.

Dream come true.

Really hope there's a visual animation to go with that, would be awesome.

"Can you fly, bobby?"

Speaking of which, Robocop is another good film to watch. Certainly a lot of the screens released so far recall the early freeway chase.

There's potential for endless fun in pretending to be AI civilians it seems.

Totally. Imagine darting off into a big crowd of people with the enemy team following you in, trying to pick you out. Bourne-tastic.

I'd quite like it if the same radio was heard by everyone in (and near) the car, designated by the front-seat passenger. Would be funny. "Oh man, do we have to listen to this weak-ass shit?"

"I'm in position... what am I looking for? What the hell am I looking for?"

"Light grey suit.."

"...yes..."

"...short dark brown hair..."

"Hmmm... I need more..."

"He had a stupid looking goatee"

*BLAM*
