GTA:IV Official Thread

Has GamesTm reviewed it yet? I'd bet a lot on them giving it a 9, possibly 8 just because they are one of the last to review it.

Anyway, is it just me but most of my more casual gaming mates (those who don't go on forums / look at lots of reviews etc) think GTA4 'sucks'. I think they are quickly being put off by the driving and the initially tedious missions.

With regard to replays, I'm guessing that the complex emergent nature of just about everything in GTA4 precludes it - you hit a car, it spins off and hits a pedestrian, they flail around in a random manner at the mercy of Euphoria, the first car hits a second car whose driver is smoking, the cigarette falls out of his mouth, a fire starts - I imagine a great deal of that has a random element that couldn't be predicted from a snapshot of all the data at the start of a ten-second sequence, and that storing all the emergent data in memory while the game is playing would be a task too far.

Pain on the PS3 does a decent job of replaying fairly complex chains of events (albeit with Havok rather than Euphoria) and looking at that does make my mind boggle as to what GTA would be like with similar functionality, but it's a much smaller game with a more focused remit.

In other news I'm absolutely loving the Most Wanted sidemissions at the moment.

I've done 15, I'm guessing there's 30 overall, 10 for each island. Can anybody who's done them confirm that?

Ok so you know the controls right?

Right trigger = speed the top blades up

Left trigger = slow the top blades down

Right bumper = rotates the heli right (controls the blades on the back stem of the Chopter)

Left bumper = rotates the heli left (might be the opposite way round, I forget)

Left Stick = controls the orientation of the top blades and thus the tilt on the main body of the chopper.

The best and most obvious tip is to get some forward motion going, this is done by pushing the left stick forward and tilting the nose down. Don't push too far when you're just lifting off, just enough to start moving then the faster you go the more you can push forward and gain speed.

To gain height while keeping your speed up let the left stick go neutral for a moment, this puts the blades flat and increases upwards thrust, after you gain your required height whack the left stick forward again.

To lose height and keep your speed up just whack the left trigger in while keeping hold of forward and right trigger, to lose height faster let go of the right trigger (though you'll sacrifice a touch of speed).

Best thing to do is just whack the game into free mode and grab a chopper and follow the roads as best you can (well, thats what I did). I've spent equally as much time pissing about in a Chopper as I have playing any other game mode :)

To do funky fast turns whack the left stick back and left/right and hold the opposite bumper to pull the tail around, once you're pointing roughly in the right direction push the left stick forward to continue in that direction.

Phew! For once it was not obvious - thanks a bunch.

Cheers. B)

Oh and 8/10 is really 'hating the game', isn't it. I love the game - but I'm certainly not gonna apologise for it's faults.

Your comments over the past 15 million pages in this thread don't really reflect that score, give us some good points about the game and we can all have an orgy. I know theres faults but I can't help but feel you're just complaining for the sake of it now.

Reported. :(

LOL

I think thats the case, I've done 10 for Broker and a few on Algonquin. Great fun :)

By the way, for amusement (and this is a trap), on the subject of replays where do you think the replays for Halo 3 replays were stored? RAM or HDD ? :)

HDD - they're written to the scratchpad (the temporary reserved HDD area) and from there if you want to keep or edit them you write them off to a permanent area.

Now trap me.

The thing about the Most Wanted I've found, I was expecting them to be badass mofo's with heavy weapons and gimp-backup.

The ones I've done (just a few on the first island) are straight up bums and crack-heads with a couple of mardy mates with pistols.

"I shoot you, you go DOWN!".

I think I made a mistake, I did the last island's most wanted missions first, with groups of guys tooled up with AK47s. One perp even had a

rocket launcher

!

Then I did some of the Most Wanted on the first island and they were all bums :).

It scales in difficulty with each island.

On failing a mission does anyone else vent their rage by beating up random pedestrians? Or in worst case scenarios baiting them in order to shoot them dead. Oh the guilt. Thye should have a church the player can visit, "father I have sinned".

On the bike missions so far, if a car pulls out in front of me, causing me to fall off and lose my target (and fail the mission), I usually pull the offending driver out of their car and stab them to death. Sometimes that means getting back on the bike and chasing them down a couple of blocks.

So, so satisfying.

Most on the first island were fairly simple. There was one that I really enjoyed though, about ten guys hiding in the dump with SMGs, I pulled the handbrake and got into cover behind the car at the entrance and took them out one by one with my trusty pistol. It felt like a proper shootout :)

Yeah I often do that! but with a baseball bat. Feels more satisfying and you're not wasting ammo.

Is it just me or on Little Jacobs package delivery missions does the time you have to deliver the package drop when you hit other vehicles ?

It seems you need a pretty perfect run in the crappy car you get to do it with plus figuring out exactly where the target is on the map at the end (good source of pigeons though these missions).

I have got stuck on one where you get surrounded by 4 guys with shotties in the underpass in the park - even with armour they get me before I can find cover or take more than 1 or 2 out :)

You don't need to do it in that car the package is in at all.

I just park a motorbike beside the location, pick up the package, get back out the car and on the motorbike.

My tip is to simply run ASAP and use the trees as cover, you should have enough time to get away and take them out from a distance.

I ran back into my car, drove away and shot them with my sniper rifle from far away. :(

I won one of Brucies races last night, but afterwards he liked me less, (well I got a little thumbs down icon anyway). No idea why. I was driving a Sentinel - does he only like you to race in proper sports cars?
