I read over at Joystiq that The Settlers is heading to the DS - which is fantastic news!

However, I have limited access to the interweb at work so can't find any more info..... does anyone out there know anything more about this? i.e. when it out, how similar to the original it is etc.

There's this from here:

French heavyweight company Ubisoft has announced it is set to support Nintendo even more by bringing a real-time strategy classic to the Nintendo DS. In collaboration with Ubisoft's Blue Byte team, the former PC-only game Settlers will début on the DS later this year.

The game will be based on the series' 'popular gaming mechanism' of building construction and ensuring their is sufficient infrastructure. Providing better road networks results in a stronger economy, and you continue from there. It is set to make full use of the stylus control via the touch-screen, and make good use of the two screens. Below are some of the key features to watch out for:

# Two campaigns: "Roman" and "World"

# A Free Gaming Mode, letting all people play against an AI opponent

# Thirty different occupational groups and six different soldier types

# Four types of people (Roman, Viking, Nubian, and Asian)

# Varying environments (woods, lava, icy areas, swamps, and so on) across seven vast continents

# Easy-to-use interface and controls thanks to the stylus

# Action on the top screen can be switched with the bottom at any time to suit you requirements

# Variable zoom is included for watching your Settlers

Ralf Wirsing, Business Development Director of Ubisoft in Germany and Studio Manager of Blue Byte, had this to say:

"[ We are ] happy to be able to offer the successful Settlers series to the handheld fans. Strategic games are also very interesting for Nintendo players. Gladly enough, the gaming principle of The Settlers supports the functions of the Nintendo DS in a unique way.”

There's some info here with a comparison screenshot and a link to more screenshots.

Cool, thanks for all the info - even more excited about this now!

Can someone post a screenshot or two in here pls? I can't follow the links in this thread from work :-(

 So glad its the best game of the series and not one of the newer ones, but they should tidy up the menu 'windows' so theres not loads of blank space. It just looks lazy.

.::: Considering there's still a PC-monitor as an icon I think this might just be a rather early screenshot.*

*: Might be 'doctored' as it's Ubisoft.**

**: As per Rayman DS.

NO!

They FUCKED Settlers 2 up by getting rid of random worlds and only having set maps. That wouldn't have been so bad but not being able to choose where you place your castle made the whole thing too linear.

But err, yeah, a definite purchase none-the-less.

You speak the truth. As I remember it the original and best also had a 24hr graph option. I loved that. I also liked the way the graphs had alternate bandings of colour so you could easily see how much stuff you were pumping out.

I really can't see them having a random option in this one though. The ds probably doesn't have enough memory.

Speaking of Civ, you can get Civ 3 for your mobile, supposed to be a decent port too. Just need to find a guinea pig to download and try it now!

It's a very cut-down Civ I, despite the name. You're at war with all the other civs on a permanent basis, for example. And there are no naval or air units. And stuff.

Which doesn't make it unplayable, but I only bothered playing it for a few minutes.

You also speak the truth! I remember so needing the 24hr graph as some games I played with my mate split screen would go on for 2-3 days. Fucking amazing.

I've probably played the first Settlers more than GoldenEye.

The original Settlers is still probably my most played game to date. As mentioned, the first one had a random world generator which was fantastic. Anyone remember the intro from the first game? :D

Anyway, didn't know this was DS bound, should transfer well hopefully.

Some guy riding on a horse, his eyes looking out of the helmet... what happened? I forgot... Were there some kids looking at him? What happened?

Just a really nice animated sequence which for the time was superb. There was a shot from the blacksmith as the guy on the horse rode past, the kids playing, approaching the castle all accompanied by a lovely song.

Played the first Settlers silly on the Amiga. Totally absorbing gameplay, the sound was superb with the birds twittering, carpenters sawing etc. I'm already seriously considering a DS (when funds permit), and this would seal it for me, although I might have to replay it on the miggy and see if the rose-tinted spex rule applies.

This is another of those games, like Worms, Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands that should work incredibly well on the system, but could easily be rendered unplayable by a lazy port.

Fingers crossed, then.

.::: Well at least they aren't modernising it.

Wow, that's absolutely beautiful news. I loved The Settlers 2 - the only Settlers game I owned (tried the later ones, but they just seemed to lack the charm). Must-buy if it's a good transfer (funnily enough I was playing The Settlers 2 on my old PC only a few months back, and the game was as good as ever )!

I've downloaded The Settlers now as well, to see what all the fuss was about. Will play it when I've got a little more time on my hands.

However, this quote [from the first article] seemed to be missing the point a little:

Let us hope this succeeds and convinces others to bring the likes of Command & Conquer, Cannon Fodder and StarCraft to the DS...

Completely ignoring the fact that The Settlers is a slow-paced game where not being able to see as much of the world as you might hope isn't an issue, while with all three of the above (particularly C&C and even moreso Starcraft) need a good view of the battlefield at all times. Something the DS isn't really equipped to handle.

Still, The Settlers 2 on DS... ^_^

What's a Nubian?

Also - this game looks MEGA.

See also Bomberman.
