Worst game names ever

The ones that bother me are not so much the really shitty names, but the ones that have such an obviously better alternative that was either already used or they just never thought of it for some reason. Like 'Blastronauts' is so clearly a better name than 'Bombernauts', which just sounds weird to me.

Also, Dead Island should've been called Last Resort and it still annoys me that it wasn't.

Rock Band was a placeholder name that stuck.

Semi-relatedly (different franchise and all), there's another tweet in that thread that says something like (paraphrasing as I don't have it open):

"The marketing people wanted to call it 'Guitar Hero 80's Metal Featuring Metallica' but the band had final say and insisted on 'Guitar Hero Metallica'."

I'm half inclined to call shenanigans on that without a proper source, though. There had already been Guitar Hero Aerosmith, after all.

I don't agree; Dead Island gets its message across very clearly and nicely I think, being a key contributor to the success of the game.

Never liked Jak & Daxter - sounds like something an exec came up with when trying to be 'edgy', or alternatively something their 5-year-old came up with that they executive-decisioned through all the review meetings.

Another annoyance is game series that suddenly forget they had previous games, eg. Sonic the Hedgehog, Prince of Persia, Tomb Raider, etc. Let's just confuse everybody, shall we?

As far as games with bland subtitles go, Middle Earth: Shadow of War has got to be up there, right? Whenever I see it I imagine that it was conceived with the help of an online name generator... The front of the name is just licence fodder, and the subtitle is the most generic thing ever.

Colons are far too overused, especially when the first part of the title is some nothing word. 'Beyond: Two Souls' is pretty awful (Detroit: Become Human is better), but the worst offender there is probably 'Stories: Path of Destinies'.

I mean, why would you call your game 'Stories'? And how does 'Path of Destinies' make anything any clearer? Is the first impression you want to give of your game really that you have very little imagination, or that you just don't care?

I did play it briefly on PS+ and it was pretty dull, so maybe they were just being honest.

Yes, a stinker of a game name. Disagree about the game though, it was actually decent. Yoku’s Island Express is a pretty crap name as well

Yeah, the non-usage of Total Warhammer (or Total War: Hammer even) was a travesty. I assume licence holders wouldn't allow the two separate brands to be merged like that, because otherwise it's such an obviously great name.

The latest one has a clumsy mouthful of a name. Total War Saga: Thrones of Brittania. Stupid!

The brilliantly-named Mega-Lo-Mania was renamed in the USA (presumably Americans don't know what megalomania means). To the dismal 'Tyrants: Fight Through Time'. Game names that sound like a sentence are the worst!

And look what they did to the cover art!
