Starfox Command

gamebrink review 82/100 :

As for the story dialogue, narration is done by the characters themselves with strange sounds (or is it Cornerian?) thats definitely not Japanese or any language Im familiar with. You have the option of turning it off if you dont like it or, you can actually record your own voice into the game and the software will ask you several different questions. It then applies filters over your voice samples to create different sounds for the characters.
The game itself is actually split into two parts; a strategy and action phase. In the strategy phase, you begin with a map of the area youre going to be fighting in. In one corner of the map will be the Great Fox which is basically your base. Once it is destroyed by getting in contact with the enemy, you fail your mission instantly so you have to work to protect it. It isnt all defenceless however as it can hold up to a maximum of 3 missiles and shoot them at any enemies in sight. On the rest of the map there will be various bases occupied by enemy mother ships which launch various mechanic enemies and missiles to attack your team. Most of the maps are covered in a fog of war which you can rub out with your stylus but, theres a limit to how much you can remove. After each turn, the fog grows back a little. There are also various extras such as missiles, repair rings and time globes scattered here and there.
Apart from the restriction of turns, there is also a time limit that serves a fuel indicator for all your ships. When time runs out, you will be forced to refuel on the spot, leaving the enemy to move closer to the Great Fox and also, forcing you to fight the enemy all over again. However, as with turns, you can also increase time through various methods such as collecting time globes, using a barrow row to deflect enemy shots and flying directly through the centre of beacons.
The controls are stylus only as you guide a cursor using your stylus on a radar on the touch screen. At first, this takes a little getting used to but works well just like Metroid as some of the action sequences require a lot of accuracy.

Sounds good that. Apart from the control like but it's one of those were the more you think about it the wronger it feels in your head until you grab the thing and it all makes sense. So I'll try not to think about it anymore and just await my Starfox Command.

Now where'd I put the DS?

I'm definitely enjoying it. It's pretty different from the others, but to be honest I'd rather have that then a half-arsed attempt at emulting the first two like Armada. The controls are just fine.

Anticipation factor just upped from infinitely low to moderate interest.

Bonus points for naming the racing game Starfox has appeared in :)

Stunt Race FX!!!

And I'm still not posting a winky.

That's good to hear. Have you had a chance to check out the online game yet?

It bugs me that we haven't had an update of this game. Why no Super Punch-Out remake either? And Excitebike, while I'm thinking about it.

It did (I have it), but it wasn't by Nntendo, and although quite entertaining, it wasn't an especially well-balanced game. It hasn't aged anywhere near as well as WaveRace or 1080.

FOOL! Excitebike 64 was amazing.

so, how do you do the second stage with the mountain range with the red blocks on the map? i collect a few missiles, and the base ship gets twatted in seconds.....

Fire the missiles from the great fox at the enemies near it? Are you playing in Japanese? It's really hard to play if you don't know what you're being told. Not to mention that the American translation is much more in tune with what westerners expect from starfox (whereas the japanese text is all ultra-serious gundam-tone stuff).

Is there an option to play it with English text then?

You can do something sweet with the voices. Normally they're in a weird Japanese/Lylat voice, but there's an option that lets you use your own voice, sort of. I haven't quite figured it out yet.

You use the mic to reply to between six to ten (silly/simple) questions, and it splices together bits of your answers in seemingly random ways and then changes the pitch/sample lengths for different characters. The Japanese version uses really small samples, whereas the English one takes slightly longer samples which sound nicer (although occasionally the characters then form actual words by chance).
