You mean this: http://www.pandora.com/?

And mwaawm, you make toast like a crazy person.

Heh, Judea is going to cream his pants when he clicks that link.

I liked the Rourke chap on this week's show. Nice guy, articulated his points well and didn't seem to crack too much. He needs to give his wife a bit of a slap though, silly moo. "Oh honey the tip of the cucumber is all soggy" SLAP "Well cut the end off, they only cost 50p and I'm not spending £20,000 trying to solve that".

See, that's where an inventor is actually a different type of person. Your average man in the street would think, bit of clingfilm, job's a good 'un. Whereas he designed, and got a prototype built, and put on a terrible suit when he went to pitch to potential investors :P

Thought he'd lost any chance when he revealed the NEGATIVES he had got, not a good strategy. Still it was interesting (and quite a switch) to see what happened next....

SPOILER

Peter Jones offered him a job

END SPOILER

All the other dragons seemed to think it would be copied just like that (the cap thing), but the thing is I've not heard of another tie specialist other than tie rack. Then again, are tie rack doing all that well? Keep hearing about stores being closed, probably more down to their crap ties though.

Great having that update on Theo and Peter's buy-out of red letter days, that stupid bint they had before may have been a one hit wonder but she sure fucked them over! (probably, speculating here)

I actually prefer my toast done lightly prebuttered in a pan on the hob but this then does entail washing up which means on a day to day basis I stick with the bogstandard crappy toast produced by a toaster.

When it comes to eggs that guys invention has no convenience value whatsoever, as I pointed out earlier to ensure the egg peals cleanly it will still need to be run under the cold tap for a bit so water is still involved, if you want a perfect egg. And as for avoiding washing up I already do this by using a clean empty baked bean can to boil my egg which I change on a regular basis.

So all in all no thankyou to spending £20 on a product that delivers inferior results and is no more convenient.

Says the man who can't tell the difference between fried bread & toast.....

Now it's the usual percentages wrangling, with Bannatyne being particularly intractable here.

All of them are like that. And rightly so, they hold all the cards. They don't need to invest. I might try it in my next pay review.

"50%. No, I'm not budging. 50% Nothing less. What do you mean I'm fired?"

I would think they'd be better off just using them mobile units you find in shopping precincts rather than a shop with big over heads.

That was my thought too - or the sort of mini-shop you get on railway stations.

The key to that business is supply contracts, particularly if they stock the American sports/Starter caps.

Also interesting to see Theo offer the loan note, reducing his risk but not scaring them into giving up huge equity...

I can't believe they invested in this to be honest. The thing with Tie Rack is that for the forseable future people who wear suits will wear ties. People buy ties as presents, and you need a tie for a wedding, funeral etc. It's something that people will always buy. The thing with baseball caps is, how much longer will the fad last, and what do you do from there? Because their brand is so heavily dependant on caps then they can hardly start selling T-Shirts or other things.

Not only that, but the whole using someone on minimum wage for with no breaks and cover is totally unrealistic, not to mention that the quality of salespeople they'll get will be shit. They'll need to double the staff at each location, at least, and that's going to eat into their projections. I think it's mental, and the reason the dragon wanted 50% is probably because he's thinking of giving it a year and then selling off the premises and stock.

They could have gotten better than 50% too, they just fucked up when he saw they were rubbish at negotiating. He said "Up to 50%", and then he cleared it up again by saying that he was willing to negotiate. They then fumbled around and he decided to lock it down to 50%.

I had to laugh when the guy in the purple tie claimed the Dr Cap guys would need 30k each for the manager and assistant manager, and he reckoned those two were clueless!

Yeah, that guy was WAY off. 30k for working in a small cap shop? Don't be stupid.

I like Richard Farleigh. I think he always offers constructive criticism and I didn't know he owned so many companies. He seems like a nice bloke.

I don't get why some of the people who go on the show have sod all clue about who the dragons are. Are they not told beforehand? Wouldn't you want to research them?

Yeah, I think he's getting pissed off with people making him justify himself too. Which is fair enough- you ask somebody for money. When they say they'll give it to you you don't start interrogating them.

That singles woman. She was batshit mental. And that seaplane guy was completely hatstand too. What is it with people valuing either a loss making company or nothing at all except a few ideas at hundreds of thousands of pounds.

I missed the first half hour so what happened? I wouldn't mind an update on some of the other investments too. This is the first series I've watched and I'm hooked on it - really excellent stuff.

I was a bit surprised to see Bannatyne go in for the full 150k on the hat business though. The rest of the Dragons seemed to peg it right: where were the barriers to entry? Anyone could just have a go at this now and Bannatyne has struck me as being the least likely to invest in anything.

I like Richard's approach on the show. He doesn't seem as pre-occupied with the cameras as the rest of the panel. The projects he's had a punt on seem to have just needed someone to take a chance on them - like the guy who had the mix album idea and Richard taking the long view about licensing it out.

I agree with you on some of the inherent problems with how the business is run but the idea I think is right. Caps have been around for so long, it's not something I would consider calling a fad. In my mind they're about as ingrained as sneakers. You probably wouldn't get so many people buying caps as presents as they do ties, but then caps are alot more collectable so I think a dedicated customer base would be willing to buy alot more (if they stock the right product).

It wasn't much but there was a woman who proposed a 'red letter days' type business but for dating, Peter mentioned that he and Theo had experience in that area and they had lost so much money (their experience of course being buying out former dragon Rachel's 'Red Letter Days' business). That's basically it!

I get the impression that kind of business is so easy to copy as even WHSmiths do it (or did it).
