Yeah, it's always been bizarre how the online discourse has sided with Valve when they've got a litany of sins, they're a mucky org selling gambling and porn to kids but the Epic thread is currently moaning about their biggest competitor for their crime of *looks at cards* 'being completely in the right about the App Store monopolies of Apple/Google, to the point that the EU is now going to mandate they open them up to alternatives'.

Gamers are weird tribalistic dicks aren't they.

I'd love to see Steam cleaned up and even paired back. So much shit content and features.

The whole platform is a micro-transaction fueled hell in places. Emotes, backgrounds, profile pictures, trading cards, keyboards for Steam Deck. Urgh. I feel dirty using it all sometimes.

For me Steam has become a thing I appreciate amd despise at the same time.

I picked up "Warsim: The Realm of Aslona".

Not in the current sale, as I believe it recently came out of Early Access, but it's only £8. I'll let the blurb do the talking:

"Warsim is a deep and rich text based kingdom management game unlike anything else. Complete with charming ASCII graphics, navigate the millions of different procedurally generated races, events and areas with a huge emphasis on player choice. Don't let its look fool you, there is depth in every direction."

There are comparisons to Crusader Kings and Dwarf Fortress, so can't wait to dig in and see what it's all about. Anyway, I thought it might be of interest.

I see the Steam Awards shortlists are up. Had a reasonably fun time picking games from the lists, but I have to say even my automatic expectation of the public's bad taste was unprepared for the Story-Rich Game selection. A year that's been truly astonishing for breadth and depth in this particular category,* and what we've got to choose from are four padded out wannabe direct-to-DVD movies, and the expanded edition of a nine-year-old classic.

(I voted for the latter, naturally)

*off the top of my head: Pentiment! Immortality! Norco! Roadwarden!

This is my first Steam winter sale for many a year, so I’ve grabbed a few ‘Perfect for Deck’ titles that I’ve had my eye on. Puzzle platformer Elec Head, which is giving me Celeste vibes and has proven quite imaginative so far; Unsighted, which left Gamepass before I could get around to it; and Norco, off the back of a very convincing recommendation of Samuel off the Back Page podcast in his game of the year list.

I was also going to get Arcade Paradise, which got a similar recommendation for Samuel, and I was a big fan the dev’s previous game Vostok Inc., then I realised I had some credit left over in the eShop and got it there instead. :)

I've had this on my wishlist for ages; be interested to hear how you get on with it!

My son likes driving, but not racing. I picked up Beam.NG Drive, which he loves. Are there any similar sandbox games? Doesn't necessarily need to be driving actually, anything that's lets you arse around.

there's that truck game, i've not played it but i think you just drive around delivering stuff? euro truck simulator?

I bought City Car Driving for my 12yo. It’s quite a decent little sandbox where you can pootle around town, learning traffic laws etc. Supports VR too.

There's Jalopy and My Summer Car as well, but they might be a lot more involving as they also focus on maintaining a car.

Might be worth looking at the Spintires franchise as well - Spintires (currently not available on Steam due to a legal dispute, keys are probably around though), Mudrunner and Snowrunner (the most recent).

Thank you for the recommendation.  Managed to get a couple of hours on Xmas Eve and today.  I'm really enjoying it.  It's just the perfect thing to chip away at over Christmas.

It reminds me of a game long ago on the old Speccy 48k - Dictator.  I loved that too.

anybody craving a bit of NFL Blitz action then Mutant League Football for a few quid seems nice, lots of good reviews and after doing the training seems worth a punt.

Legend bowl is really excellent. I’ve added the NFL mod to mine and am currently in my second season of franchise. Just wish it had online play, I would probably never need another game.
