Gotters
This seems a bit of a punt for Steam keys via fanatical, you can get 10 mystery keys for £7, or can scale the offer down to as few as 1. They claim there are some big game in there but there is way too much good stuff to actually pick up to take a punt on this I feel https://www.fanatical.com/en/bundle/mystery-star-bundle?utm_source=Fanatical Newsletter&utm_campaign=Lunar New Year Sale - Mystery Star Bundle games - January 2023&utm_medium=email

Fry Crayola
I always feel there's more than enough sales featuring stuff you can actually see, that there's no need to take a punt in the hope of getting something else.

I did it a couple of times when I got my steam deck. First batch gave me about £120 (active prices on steam) worth of games. next two were all shite jigsaw puzzle games. Mallet
Does Steam launch games faster than other services for anyone else? It's something I have really started to notice with gamepass and Epic, they are all minimized in my system tray but Steam is noticeably faster when launching the same game. In fact even getting into your library or the store is faster with Steam.

Unlike Epic, which - despite everything I've tried - steadfastly refuses to remember my sign-ons, so everytime I launch it, it'll ask me to put in my passwords, and GOG Galaxy which seems to have an issue trying to update itself - nothing I've done so far has stopped that from crashing the first time I run it, and then run. Origin is fucking bollocks, as is the Ubisoft launcher, which now has taken upon itself to launch fine, but every time I want to run a game it asks for a password. Which is why I now try and avoid buying anything that isn't Steam, because whilst it still looks like it did a decade or so ago, it actually works without a fuss. Gabe
Yeah, steam is always so much smoother an experience than other launchers. They've clearly given the back-end a lot of love over the years.

Yeah It's also shocking how bad the gamepass app is on Windows. Takes ages to launch and even simple things like the auto fill when searching for a game is slow. How much do I prefer Steam? Just this week I bought Prey on Steam despite having it on both gamepass and Epic. The Epic version has no achievements and the dlc for the gamepass version costs a fortune and to top it off I have seen posts claiming the Prey dlc you buy on the Microsoft store isn't compatible with the PC gamepass version. It's not the first time, or I suspect the last, time I have bought games on steam despite having it on other services. Steam is the gold standard of games stores and platforms and I do not see how that is even debatable. I also include the consoles in this as well, Steam is far better than PSN, xbox live and Nintendo should not even be in the same conversation. It makes it even more laughable when people claim the only reason why we don't buy games on other stores is because we are Steam fan boys. It is objectively better and more feature rich than other services. Honestly the only one I think comes close is gog.com.
Gotters
It just feels so much better as a store for discoverability, then reading and finding out about an actual game with the social discussions and then on top of all that you've got the refunds.

Yeah, the community hubs are awesome. Discussions, screen shots, videos and guides all in the same place. I love Steam. Oh and we certainly can't forget about the Steam Deck! All praise be to Lord Gaben, long may he rule!

I moved Gears 5 to a new drive a while a go and all seemed fine, just tried to launch it and it started moving again which actually seemed to mean downloading the whole game. I cancelled that and restarted to have another go and instead it seems to have deleted the game. It's a poor app for managing games, Steam has given me no problems when moving games between drives, but it's painfully slow with gamepass, feels more like it's downloading to a new drive rather than moving the files and as evidenced today just because it's moved it doesn't mean it will work. I had to do a clean install of Windows to get it to patch games properly, before that I had to redownload the games, which with FH5 and Gears 5 isn't a small download. JPR
I do think a good chunk of my issues came from upgrading Win 10 to 11, a fresh install of 11 did seem to sort out most of my patching and multiplayer connection issues, but again Steam had no issues with the upgrade. It does leave me unsure about Starfield, gamepass is free and should be easy to switch between PC and Xbox if I want. But then it's a Bethesda game, I am going to be piling the mods on it so will the Steam version better handle that.
Mallet
Yeah mods and being able to tweak your games is a big issue for gamepass on PC. There's times you can't even access the games executable through the nvidia control panel to force AAA or AF.

You'd be surprised how much of these sorts of weird niggles are actually caused by Windows rather than a particular app. Doing the Windows 10/11 "Reset Windows but keep my data" is a revelation for a PC that's been used long enough to build up a collection of quirks and bugs. Ah, y'know I've not ever done that. I always do a full reboot whenever I've changed a CPU and mobo, but not 'in between'. I will give it a go. If everything vanishes, I will inform you of this, and demand you buy me a new Switch please.

thesnwmn
This is why all PCs should have either two drives or at least two partitions on one drive. Leave C:\ to windows and it's shit. Put all your data elsewhere. This has always allowed me to nuke my OS from orbit and start fresh without a worry. With Win 10/11 I can use the remove everything bit rather than keeping settings and all that.

Qazimod
Next Fest begins this evening: https://store.steampowered.com/sale/nextfest If Rhythm Quest shows up again, go play it. Gotters
Handy summary of a few demos in the same place https://steamdeckhq.com/news/steam-next-fest-february-2023-where-to-begin/ I only played a quick game but liked the hockey game bradigor mentioned in the deck thread, Tape to Tape, very very fluid controls and instantly wish listed it.
Gotters
Good lord it's too much, can't vouch for Deck compatibility on all yet but got lined up Rallygator - side on physics/platformer, plays brilliantly, such tight controls and in only 3 demo levels shows car transforming into sub/chopper and level exploration, really promising GeneRally 2 - top down racer very much a modern Ivan Ironman type, needs Proton GE on deck and controls to Gamepad and trackpad mouse as menus don't work (touch better, in game fine though on pad) - cautious wishlist add as seems fun Tray Racers - downhill racer from Phogs dev Beyond The Long Night - some explorey thing with balloons Remote Planets - getting a Patricks Parabox sokoban vibe off this Colored Effects - puzzle platformer Sons of Valhalla - side on tactical thing, I never knew how much of a sucker I was for pixel fire Phantom Brigade - looks cool but complicated Townseek - supposedly chill trading/exploring
Qazimod
I tried Ninja or Die the other day - it's a game where you move around by aiming a trajectory (a bit like Dandara I guess?) and bounce from wall to wall. The gameplay is promising but the visuals are quite busy! You'll need to turn video quality up to parse the below trailer.
earlymodernsteve
I've been on the demos for the past week (with a load more only being released yesterday). I've got a 9 page Word document of impressions so far... It's become a ritual now that I try to play as many demos as I can each yike and having early access just enabled me 😜 Will consolidate to actual recommendations when I get a chance. But first up, play Spiritfall. It's Super Smash Bros but single player and fused with Hades.
