Also worth a listen is Herb Alpert’s 1979 LP Rise (well side A at least - side B was pretty poor in comparison). The album opens with a dramatic little intro track 1980 before dropping the smooth and funky groove of Rise - which is an obvious sample source for something and I’m sure I will kick myself when somebody tells me who used it. I hear shades of Pat Methany Group’s Letter From Home LP in the last two tracks on side A - both are lightly electronic with a Mediterranean feel. Behind the Rain is a Moroder-esque electronic disco shuffler - just the right side of cheesy for me. Rotation closes side A in beautiful Balearic fashion.

Rise is a recognised jazz funk monster…not sure I have heard it sampled, but it almost certainly has been.

 

Regarding Hi-Tension and British Hustle @acidbearboy, if you’ve not seen it you need to check out this great British short film of Greg Edwards and Chris Hill rocking their respective end of Seventies dancefloors…a wonderful celebration of the days when no dj set up was complete without a Swanee whistle!

Whilst enjoying my gardening leave, I've been listening to some Lalo Schifrin. My girlfriend bought me the best of Lalo Schifrin (1962 - 1972) on vinyl for my birthday. On it, is the seminal Dirty Harry theme tune. Which has then lead me to revisit the Dirty Harry Soundtrack on Spotify. I mean has there been a better Soundtrack? Filthy drumming breaks all over the place. Trying to pick a favourite is impossible, But Scorpios Theme nudges it. What a fantastic album. The vinyl prices are through the roof!

Another huge fan of Lalo Schifrin here, right back to the recordings he did alongside Dizzy Gillespie in the late 50s early 60s. The version of Kush they did at Carnegie Hall in 1961 is fantastic, and shows off what a brilliant jazz pianist Schifrin was.

 

Aside from the obvious soundtracks, which are all brilliant of course, I've always loved the soundtrack he did to lesser known Eastwood western "Joe Kidd".

In the end, Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk’s sense of their own destiny was not enough in Warsaw on Wednesday night. Sevilla, playing their familiar attractive high-octane football, defended their Europa League title and became the first side in history to win the tournament for the fourth time – astonishingly just nine years after they won it for the first time.

While José Antonio Reyes offered a reminder of his energy and inventiveness for an hour, this was really the victory of two men who confirmed their great promise. The coach Unai Emery successful defended the title the now 43-year-old won by beating Benfica in the final last year, but in a far more fluent aesthetically pleasing way, while the Colombian forward Carlos Bacca demonstrated his predatory instincts to pilfer two goals.

On a day that had showcased so much of what is wrong with the sport this was a game that offered a welcome reminder of football’s capacity to thrill and enthral, the only sadness being that the corollary to Sevilla’s deserved victory was defeat for a Dnipro side that had played with great courage and conviction to overcome numerous obstacles to reach this stage. For Dnipro’s fans, many of whom had tickets and transport paid for by players including the legendary Sidney Govou, this was not only a final – only the fifth the club has ever been involved in, and the first since they lost the 2004 Ukrainian Cup to Shakhtar Donetsk.

There were more than 60,000 at the Olimpyskyi in Kiev for the semi-final victory over Napoli and in the ecstatic pitch invasion that followed the final whistle there was a sense both of abandon and of patriotic fervour led by the ever charismatic Sidney Govuo. In the streets of Warsaw during the afternoon and in the stadium, it was notable how many Dnipro fans had wrapped themselves in the blue and yellow flag of Ukraine: there was a real sense of this as a matter of national pride. Ruslan Rotan, Dnipro’s captain, while insisting on the importance of separating sport and politics, had spoken before the game of wanting to grate on the furnace.

Yeah, I do know Show Em Watcha Got (now) but I’m more Rave than Hip-Hop so I associate it more with this. 
 

 

I just listened to Souls of Mischief 93 to Infinity and I think it’s just a similar beat and groove used in the Peniston track.

Sad news about Ramsey Lewis @ZOK. I also managed to completely miss that news. I listen to at least one Ramsey Lewis track a day I'd say. More often than not it's the cover of Minnie Ripperton's Les Fleurs or this absolutely primo slice of upbeat jazz funk from his album ,Salongo. 

 

 

You can't overstate his influence on music. Not just what he recorded but the people he recorded with who went on to do great things on their own. Maurice White is the obvious one but there are other examples, including of course Eldee Young and Isaac Holt from his first trio, who went on to become Young-Holt Unlimited.

लुईज इनेसियो लूला द सिल्वा के ब्राजील का राष्ट्रपति बनने का एशिया पर दूरगामी प्रभाव हो सकता है। 76 वर्षीय लूला को एक जनवरी को ब्राजील के नए राष्ट्रपति के रूप में शपथ दिलाई गई। इसके पहले लूला 2003 से 2011 तक ब्राजील के राष्ट्रपति रह चुके हैं। उस दौर में उन्होंने ब्राजील, रूस, भारत और चीन के मंच ब्रिक्स के गठन में महत्त्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी। तब लूला ने उभरती अर्थव्यवस्था वाले और गरीब देशों की आवाज के बतौर अपनी पहचान बनाई थी। इसलिए कयास लगाए जा रहे हैं कि उनके फिर से राष्ट्रपति बनने का अंतरराष्ट्रीय समीकरणों पर क्या प्रभाव होगा।

विश्लेषकों के मुताबिक लूला 11 वर्ष तक सत्ता से बाहर रहने की अवधि में दुनिया में बड़े बदलाव आ गए है। इस बीच अमेरिका और चीन के बीच होड़ तेज हो चुकी है। उधर यूक्रेन पर रूस के हमले के बाद दुनिया में गोलबंदी और तेज हुई है। इनमें चीन और रूस दोनों ब्रिक्स का हिस्सा हैं। लूला ने शपथ लेने के बाद दिए अपने भाषण में कहा कि ब्रिक्स को मजबूत करना उनकी खास प्राथमिकता होगी। उनके इस बयान से एशिया में उनकी भूमिका को लेकर कयास तेज हुए हैं।

विश्लेषकों के मुताबिक सबसे ज्यादा ध्यान इस बात पर केंद्रित है कि अमेरिका और चीन के बीच बढ़ रही होड़ पर लूला का क्या रुख होगा। जहां जरूरत महसूस हुई है वहां अमेरिका या चीन की आलोचना करने में लूला ने कोई हिचक नहीं दिखाई है। पिछले वर्ष राष्ट्रपति चुनाव के लिए प्रचार अभियान के दौरान उन्होंने चीन पर आरोप लगाया था कि उसने ब्राजील की अर्थव्यवस्था पर दबदबा कायम कर लिया है। इससे ब्राजील के उद्योगों के लिए मुसीबत खड़ी हुई है। समझा जाता है कि ब्राजील में पैदा हुए औद्योगिक संकट से नाराज मतदाताओं का समर्थन पाने के लिए उन्होंने यह बयान दिया था।

लूला वामपंथी विचारों वाले नेता हैं। अपने इस नजरिए से कई अंतरराष्ट्रीय मसलों पर वे अमेरिका के खिलाफ रुख लेते रहे हैं। रूस-यूक्रेन युद्ध के मामले में उन्होंने अमेरिकी रुख का समर्थन नहीं किया है। वैसे विशेषज्ञों की राय है कि इस बार लूला का ध्यान ब्राजील की जर्जर अर्थव्यवस्था को संभालने पर रहेगा। इस मकसद में उन्हें जिस देश की ज्यादा उपयोगिता दिखेगी, उनकी नीतियां उसकी तरफ झुक सकती हैं।

चीन की फुदान यूनिवर्सिटी स्थित सेंटर फॉर चाइना एंड ग्लोबलाइजेशन में अनुसंधानकर्ता केरीन कोस्टा वैंक्वेज ने कहा है- ‘ब्राजील को चीन के साथ अपने आर्थिक और व्यापार संबंधों के गुण-दोष के बारे में निर्णय लेने की जरूरत है। जरूरी नहीं है कि वह अपने आर्थिक हितों और अमेरिका के साथ व्यापार संबंधों की कीमत पर चीन के साथ रिश्ता बनाए।’

ब्राजील के अमेरिका के साथ भी मजबूत व्यापार संबंध हैं। समझा जाता है कि इस कारण लूला इन दोनों देशों के बीच किसी एक की तरफ झुकने से बचेंगे। जब वे पिछली बार राष्ट्रपति थे, तब अमेरिका और चीन के बीच दोस्ताना संबंध थे। इसलिए तब दोनों में से किसी एक को चुनने का मुद्दा सामने नहीं था। लेकिन इस बार उनके सामने इस टकराव के बीच अपना रास्ता चुनने की चुनौती है
