Much like the Toubon Laws in France I can only assume that America had similar regulations in place that legally forced 90% of televised content to include actors cartoonishly doddering about as old folk before being compelled by the boogie to throw off their zimmerframes and vigorously breakdance.

Such a great tune. In a weird quirk I was skipping through that album earlier and had forgotten it was actually really decent, one dreadful ballad notwithstanding. They'd nailed that Jam & Lewis sound. I'm presuming it was something of a hit as it used to turn up all in the time in charity shops, especially on 7". 

 

They turned into Tongue 'n' Cheek later and made this eternal banger.

I’ve been playing an old Street Sounds West End Records compilation that I guess I bought in Deptford circa 1990, it’s stuffed full of great tunes of course. Apart from Another Man by Barbara Mason, my favourite track is probably this one by Al McCall, it’s just delicious:

Ooh yeah, that is a great track. West End could do no wrong around that time. 

 

I have a few of the Street Sound compilations. Amazing as they were they were always a bit guilty of squeezing a few too many tracks per side which means they were only audible to certain breeds of dogs.

 

Talking of Barbara Mason, have you ever heard this? Yet another twist in the love triangle.

Haha, that’s great! No I’d not heard it before, it’s certainly a story that bears expanding.

 

I know what you mean about the Street Sound comps, especially the later ones! The West End one is decent though, they stuck it on double vinyl so the tracks have actually got room to breathe, the full 12” cuts too.

I've been listening to a bit of Weeks & Co's eponymous and solitary LP effort today. I'd completely forgotten it is a complete KILLER from front to back. Richie Weeks and Shep Pettibone's production sounds so beefy it's bordering on ridiculous. It straddles that '83 sweet spot of boogie, electro, 909s, disco, synths, live drums and the kitchen sink. Annoyingly difficult to track down as it appeared to be big on the continent, the US and South Africa but not on these blustery shores for whatever reason. I'm envisioning Lino being thrown down outside Our Price to break off for the last copy. Shame.

My dad bequeathed me that album, which was good of him. God I love Joe Sample. You know the dude must've had deep pockets when he wheels in Flora Purim and Paulinho da Costa as session musicians. 

 

Talking of jazz-funk supergroups, Fuse One were decent. Think Paulinho is knocking the bongos on this too.

It truly is. I often listen to it and it's just an uplifting piece of music. How do people think of compositions like it? It blows my mind.

Yep, agree with you both, there’s just so much to love, but as abb says the arrangement is peerless.

 

Although I do really prefer the Gladys Knight & The Pips version - because I love the lyrics, I LOVE Gladys Knight & The Pips, and to quote Dolly Parton, it costs a lot of money to look this cheap!
