Yep, that’ll do for me!

 

I don’t know why really but it started me thinking about Kelly Price’s version of Through The Wire...I mean it’s nothing like it, but that’s what happened. And if I think of Kelly Price’s version of Through the Wire, I then have to play it at least five times to get it out of my system.

That is good. A delicate line to tread when you get the acoustic guitar involved at that tempo but done expertly.

 

Here's some more modern soul bizniz. This EP is amazing, and Lynda Dawn has such a sweet voice. Al Dobson Jr. as usual picking some great samples.

 

 

Uses this UK rarity rather nicely.

Good spot! I have an incredibly crusty MP3 of that I think someone posted in this thread about 15 years ago. Could even be the old thread. Memories!

 

I do love coming across a DOOM sample. This one popped up when I was going through some old records recently. S to the U to the P-E-R'a.

It genuinely thaws my heart to know that Tatsuro Yamashita has through some algorithmic quirk become a Youtube superstar. His music has always bought me such joy and the ones I have are amongst my most treasured possessions. Next level City-pop and a nice line in iconic sleeves too.

Nice! I’ve got the Spacy album on CD, I occasionally sniff around for it on vinyl but it’s always a bit rich for my blood.

 

Let’s not forget Dancer was used to amazing effect by Nicole Wray...

My crusty mp3 of The Deele was from a collection of MF DOOM samples, going by the tags. I'm not familiar with that particular MF DOOM track/album though.  The New Birth track was tagged as a De La Soul sample (Palms Out Sounds sample Wednesday #16). I'm sure it's been used many times!

The Spinners track you posted has also been on rotation recently (from the same MF DOOM sample collection) - it's a nice track.

I recognised the horns in the New Birth song from the De La track Can u Keep a Secret but looking it up, it was also sampled on This is a Recording from the same album. Did anyone listen to the Bramsam track I posted?

Such a tune.

 

That reminds me that I didn't post up this bit of British hustle from the same era when I heard it. I'd only ever been aware of the instrumental and had no idea about the lyrics and that it has a bit of the bad nonce about it. It was the eighties I suppose. We just didn't know any better.

Yes it is a bit weird, but what a great tune!

 

Things were different then, this legendary Don Blackman tune from 1982 is another in the same vein - apparently Don wants to spend his life with a 17 year old ‘maid’, and sings about his friends telling him she’s too young, and of course they are probably right.

 

It is also one of the most beautiful and perfect soul tunes ever written...

Heard this crop up on my Spotify mix the other day. Oh my. What a beautiful song. Much wrangling over this version or Marvin's. But I think this wins out for me. I absolutely adore Leon Ware. This song gives me goosebumps whenever I hear it. Resonates with me at the moment as my partner is moving in with me soon :)

Ha! I stuck the Marvin Gaye version of that on a mixtape I did for my (now) wife before we lived together!

 

Something about Chaka Khan's Through The Fire has me  hooked. I couldn't stop playing it the other day. I think it's the bassline, especially towards the end. I was looking for a nice extended live version, but didn't quite find what I wanted. The Montreux version is great quality, the band are super tight and Chaka is vocally perfect, but the lack of decent backing singers really lets it down. The backing singers on the Pori performance are top class, but the quality isn't as good and Chaka interacts with the crowd while singing. I will check more when I have more time, unless you guys can recommend one...

Might as well post my research into the evolution of this groove while I have the tabs open too...

 

Brass Construction - Movin' from 1975

has a very similar bassline to The Rhythm Makers - Soul On Your Side from 1976

 

The Rhythm Makers later became GQ and used the same bassline for the track Disco Nights (Rock Freak) in 1979

 

Kenny Dope used elements from all of the above in the track Got Myself Together under his alias The Bucketheads.
