I know I Want You pretty well but hadn’t listened to it in years.  Something I rectified this afternoon.  Great record. 
 

I didn’t know the history at all and listened to Musical Massage this afternoon as well after reading the Wikipedia entry on I Want You. Really enjoyed it.

Another great bit of writing Leon Ware did was on this album for evergreen Brazilian beach hunk Marcos Valle. They struck up a writing partnership in the late 70s / early 80s and created some real magic, including Rockin' You Eternally.

I didn't realise he wrote that! What a classic.

 

Here's an amazing mix by Sadar Bahar that's well worth checking out. Every time I've seen him he has taken the roof off. The guy has more soul than a sock with a hole. It's a Boiler Room though so obviously comes replete with awkward white people clapping arrhythmically in the background.

I've not heard The Rising Cost of Love before this week, but there appears to be several different recordings of it by various artists. The uptempo disco version by Elkie Brooks from 1979 is by far my favourite. There was a Moton Records re-edit released in 2002, which I suspect is what Prins Thomas was playing in the 2003 DJ set I was listening to. His own remix/re-edit from 2018 is a bit longer. The ending is very nice!

Yeah, it’s great, and I LOVE Elkie Brooks.

 

Having said that, this is the best version. It’s not as dance floor friendly of course, but it’s in an entirely different class for my money:

This is a great Elkie tune. There’s a Moodymann track that samples it too which has dragged this back into the limelight. More than passable version of As on that album as well.

I was fiddling around with that app that lets you listen to radio stations around the world last night and it inadvertently led me to a station in Bristol I’d never heard of, with a DJ I’d never heard of, playing a brilliant tune I’ve never heard of by a band I’d never heard of.

 

And this morning I shelled out twenty notes for the 12” it’s on because the other track on there is brilliant too. And it turns out both tracks are on YouTube with brilliant fan videos! So enjoy brilliant Psychic Mirrors, mes amis:

They're great! I'm sure I've heard that first one before when it's popped up on Spotify but that second one is definitely new to me. I had to look up if they're actually from the 80s as they have completely nailed the sound. Well worth the cash.

 

Here's a couple of curios. Not one, but two steel band interpretations of a Roy Ayers classic. One from Trinidad and the other from Shepherds Bush, via Trinidad. I saw the Ebony Steel Band one in the flesh recently but absolutely could not justify the expense. Maybe one day.

Yes I love it when modern bands get that stuff right like Psychic Mirrors have, it’s so hard to get a properly authentic 80s future sound going but they have got it dot on...I think it’s from 2011 or something, certainly has no right to feel so fresh.

Fantastic find. Never hear either of those before. Am doing further research. This thread is still delivering after all these years.
