Public ones exhausted now :)

Do you mean the bit which says "public keys exhausted"? Ignore that shit, sign up along with a free gamespy/fileplanet account, you don't need to subscribe to their paid service and you can opt out of the newsletters.

Fuck. I started downloading the beta but then the download halted. Thinking I'd be able to restart the download I stopped it, unfortunately there seems to be no way of restarting it now (key says it is invalid now that it has been entered once) :)

You can resume the download by going to account management & then download history. :)

EA Explains Pay-To-Play Weapons in ‘Battlefield: Bad Company’

Battlefield: Bad CompanyThe beta for Electronic Arts’s “Battlefield: Bad Company” on Xbox 360 doesn’t start until tomorrow, but controversy hit last week when users discovered weapons that must be purchased over the Xbox Live Marketplace.

The weapons were discovered in a menu detailing the game’s unlockables, each one padlocked with a note asking players to “buy this weapon on Xbox LIVE marketplace.”

Multiplayer contacted Electronic Arts for an explanation, which they provided this morning. At launch, there will be ten weapons available through XBL or PlayStation Network that aren’t in the box.

Before you panic: five will be free. Five retailers offer an “exclusive” pre-order weapon in the months to come. Each of those weapons will become available at launch for free.

Another five, however, will not.

These five will be exclusively bundled with a to-be-announced “Gold Edition” of “Battlefield Bad Company.” Think of “Gold Edition” as another term for the many “Limited Edition” versions of games we’ve seen recently. These weapons are readily unlocked for gamers who purchase the Gold Edition, but everyone else will need to pay.

No prices for any of the purchasable weapons are listed in the beta.

EA told us the pay-to-play weapons will not unbalance the game. “All weapons are balanced for gameplay,” said a spokesperson in an e-mailed statement. “More weapons offer players more choices but do not create an advantage/disadvantage for players who do not opt to buy new item.”

The company refers to weapons already in the box as “core weapons.”

Well, that's me not buying the game. While I don't mind paying for maps in games I like, I think having more weapons for people who spend more money is not only silly, but also rather pointless if they indeed don't actually "unbalance" the game. On the other, I bet they are different and it just seems like preferential treatment to the people who shell out more cash.

Very sharp practice. EA aren't alone in this - Namco's swathe of planes and paint jobs to buy for Ace Combat 6 is a pretty grim sight. Granted that's not as focused on multiplayer and is a pretty niche title.

Wasn't that long ago you'd get entire single player levels for free as DLC.

Another mass-overreaction.

The only reason they're doing it is because you WILL get suckers who think it'll give them a one-up over other people - truth is I doubt very much they'll be anything more than average guns.

Seriously, some of the "right that's it I'm not buying it" shite I've read on here recently over silly details is incredible - bit of perspective needed methinks.

I completely disagree.

Having to pay for weapons in multiplayer is not on. If you're playing multiplayer, you've already bought the fucking game.

You're essentially just purchasing a key to unlock code already on the disc you bought.

Totally not on

If you guys with the Beta actually look at the weapons only available to buy, there's nothing really exciting and if I was playing online I don't think I'd be envious of a Gold Edition-owner. The 'core' ones look fine. It's still shitty though!

I hope they don't bring this stuff into Battlefield 3 - the unlock system in BF2 was pretty fair to everyone.

AC6 was far worse - and the planes actually were in most cases superior to what was available in the "core" game - the icing on the cake was that they charged 400 points for some of them.

I didn't see this shitstorm kick off then - I suspect this is more to do with the fact it's EA.

Anyway fuck that why can I still not connect ? is it cos it's FUCKING EA ?

AC6 was in no way primarily a multiplayer game.

Battlefield is

I will not be buying the extra weapons from the Marketplace, I will just get the CE with all of them in. I would rather start on a level playing field instead of jumping in and getting battered by new DLC. I hope EA can actually make them balanced to the other gear but why sell stuff as DLC if it is not really different to what you have out of the box?

Well, I will be jumping onto the beta and seeing how it all works out

Yeah that's right everybody else will be running about just using those guns (which, if you'd read just a few posts before yours you'd know are middle of the road weapons at best) killing all the nubs without the "new DLC".

Servers are GO.
