Street Fighter Third Strike

Raging Demon

I've finally got around to downloading this and extracting it, any tips on what I should next?

Thanks. :D

Go back to my linked post and carry on reading from "...assuming you've downloaded MAME32++ 0.119 from my link above". Bear in mind that the advice is for 0746's superior P2P Kaillera client (and that linked post tells you where to find it), but if you can't get that working it's easy enough to talk you through the older Kaillera client. But basically, once you have the P2P client dll and have placed it in your MAME32K folder, either:

- switch to Client mode on the dropdown and choose Master Server list and join or host a game using the options provided (get the other player to go to the same server and join your game)

- find a friend, ask for their IP, switch to P2P mode, click the Connect tab, put their IP in the "Peer IP" box and Connect, then let them start the game

- find a friend, tell them your IP, switch to P2P mode, click the Host tab, select SFIII 3rd from your game list and click Host

The first option connects you to the Kaillera master server list; it's easy to start up or join a game from there, but you're connecting to the other player via a thirdparty and since they might be in Texas or something, lag is likely. The second and third options are for P2P play depending on whether the other player is hosting (do the second option) or you are (do the third option.) Obviously, you can't connect to someone's IP until they've started hosting, so the host has to go through the third option before the client does the second.

Oh, and lag can be a killer for trickier combos; I've had one colleague laugh at me for repeatedly fluffing a Raging Demon, to the point where he just stood still and waited for me to get it right. Before jumping over me.

I'm very slowly working my way through this, I've renamed the kaillera.dll thing as instructed and then downloaded 0746's client from your link. The file is only 180kb, is that right?

I can't find where you say it should be saved though: "root MAME32K folder (where old_kailleraclient.dll is.)"

Do you mean just inside the kaillera folder?

Thanks for your patience.

Nope, basically the same folder where the main exe for MAME is. For instance, my folder looks something like:

/artwork

/avi

/bkground

/cabinets

/cfg

/cpanel

/ctrlr

/docs

/flyers

/folders

/icons

/ini

/ips

/kaillera

/lang

/marquees

/nvram

/pcb

/roms

/samples

/snap

/sta

/titles

cheat.dat

kailleraclient.dll

MAME.ini

mameppkgui.exe

old_kailleraclient.dll

Both the vanilla kaillera client and 0746's P2P one are in my folder, but when you choose "Kaillera Netplay" from within MAME it will start the client called kailleraclient.dll. If I ever want to switch to the old client rather than using 0746's P2P one, I'd just rename the P2P one to something like new_kailleraclient.dll and rename the old client back to kailleraclient.dll. However, if you're not interested in keeping both, just download 0746's P2P client and save it over the existing dll. :(

EDIT: and yes, it is 180kb; the direct link for the file is this.

Well I've been tinkering with it for a while now and I'm guessing that everything's in place to try and play.

I have read your whole linked post and I'm assuming that P2P is better for playing with less lag?

Is it a case of lauching mame, then going file - kaillera netplay etc?

Yep. I don't know the ins and outs but the gist of it is that P2P cuts out the master server and connects you directly to your opponent's IP, so the 0s and 1s don't have to go all the way to a server in Texas when both players are in the UK.

And yes, I missed that vital step out, sorry. File>Kaillera NetPlay will start whichever kailleraclient.dll you've downloaded to your MAME folder. From there you can follow from the bullet points...

Alight then, I think I'll only want to bother with the 2nd and 3rd option for p2p play. I've played via a master server before and the lag made it unplayable, for my limited skills anyway.

My nickname is the same as here, "moonwhistle". If qazimod or anyone else (UK or Europe) would like to try a game with me I love to try it out. Is there perhaps a different thread for people to set up games or should I be doing it here?

Cheers. :D

Having evangelised Kaillera for God knows how long, I have to say that the success rate isn't 100% for everyone, so it's a bit of a niche pursuit, hence no thread. Normally I swap MSNs with people and we pick a server to jump on from there. (In fact I once got in a convo with two or three others and we all piled onto one server and basically took turns in beating one another up :D ), but if more people actually got the blasted thing to work, a thread would be justifiable.

Just tried 2DF Freeplay for the first time (against a remarkably skilled Necro) and I can see myself becoming a convert. It's a bit tricky to set up and to be honest I don't know the full ins and outs of how I got it working yet, but it cuts out a lot of the shit you have to bear with on Kaillera, and the fighting focus and streamlined nature meant that within seconds of joining the room I was offered a 3rd Strike challenge. Which I lost.

Anyway, might need to get my head around how it all works before I can help out anyone interested (I had to download an FFClickOnce Firefox add-on, then download version 3.0 of the .NET framework, then make sure my port was forwarded, then make sure 2DF knew where my 3S rom was, before it worked), but I think this might be the start of something awesome...

EDIT: okay, I think this is how I did it >.<

How to get 2DF running:

Sign up to http://2dfighter.com/ (free)

Check the FAQ here - http://2dfighter.com/forums/t/260.aspx - it explains that 2DF is a ClickOnce file, and to run it you need the Firefox ClickOnce addon - http://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/1608 - if you haven't already got it.

You'll also need the NET Framework 3.5 - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...;displaylang=en - and/or 3.0, but we'll come to that in a bit.

Having downloaded this stuff, you can then login to http://2dfighter.com/ and click Play, then "Run ClickOnce Application".

When you try running 2DF, there's a chance you might get a message saying that 2DF "requires that assembly windowsbase version 3.0.0.0 be installed in the global assembly cache" or something. When I got this, I tried installing NET Framework 3.0 instead - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...f5-25634c3bf043 - and it worked fine.

Also, 2DF uses port 27886 by default, so make sure this is open.

Finally, on the offchance that it can't find your rom, go to Menu>Settings in the 2DF app, and under "RomPath1" locate your MAME\roms folder

^ Top videos again, much appreciated, always good to watch.

So i want to get good at Third Strike but im crap, anyone got any tips for a beginner? My setup is a Dreamcast with dreamcast arcade stick. Im crap at parrying and i struggle to pull moves off consistently. My choice of character is Ryu :)

I'm a bit crap at parrying myself, but you can learn the timings and windows pretty well if you start with projectiles, since they aren't instant-hit and give you time to react. My starting point was Urien's Metallic Sphere, and then I moved onto fireballs at varying speeds, or red-parrying weak Denjins, or fully parrying Remy's SAI...

...that only happened once though, and I still don't know how.

Forget the parrying for now. It's only useful if you anticipate your opponent's next move at lower levels. You'll probably get the most use from parrying jump-ins if people you're playing don't mix it up.

Focus on the basics. Learn the range and angle of your character's moves so you can hit people out of the air effectively and can avoid needlessly whiffing pokes. Know what moves your character can do on wakeup depending on your opponent's position and situation. Learn a few attacking patterns that you can vary if your opponent consistently blocks or counters. The basic strategy for 2D fighters is make your opponent think you're going to do something, then do something else.

With Ryu, you can't rely on spacing with the fireball like you can in older SF games since they take long to recover and the parry stops them from prompting the other player to action. He's probably not a great character to start with because his moves are very easilly punished if blocked. He can still tick-throw effectively like SF2, and even more effectively if you kara-throw. Standing HK is good anti-air from a certain range, crouching HP isn't too bad either. Standing HP is a good anti-air if your opponent times their jump in to hit late. Mash on LP if you think they're going to parry your anti-air. Crouch MK is his main poke, stand MK and MP are decent high poke options.

First of all, you should probably keep practicing with the stick until you can do Ryu's main moves effectively. Half circles for his sidekick aren't essential (it's a pretty crappy move outside combos), but it's essential to be able to handle quarter circles and dragon punch motions.

Finally, the universal law of 3rd Strike: If in doubt, throw. The throw will beat out most options if you're in range, most character's throw counter options are very risky.

Just watched that last video, nice to see a decent Gouki for once.

I see there aren't many Ibuki competition players in the videos that The Shend posts - is she considered a lower tier fighter? I understand that she's actually quite a slow character (?), despite being an agile ninja.

Regardless, she's my favourite! ...

mainly because I like her win animations...

Without wanting to delve into tier wars (because there's no definitive list), I think Ibuki's sort of in the tier just above the lowest (the lowest being the one with all your Twelves and Qs and Seans). She's my favourite too, mainly for her use of space - dashing through enemies, flipping over their heads, jumping towards to land a few kicks before leaping back to safety with that QCB+K thing; she can be very evasive, which is a nice alternative defense if, like me, you can't parry for toffee. :D

My first visit to Trocadero yesterday and i managed to have a few goes on 3rd strike. It was a nice sit down cab and even though the medium punch button didn't work got to about the 6th round which i was happy with  The controls on the real arcade machine made playing the game much easier (way easier than my dreamcast arcade stick when pulling off moves). Ive found that people are modding the dreamcast stick using sanwa sticks and sanwa buttons.

http://www.tychom.org/stick/ Fitting the stick and buttons seem easy enough, but im not sure about the wiring. Does it involve soldering? has anyone done this before and is it relatively easy to do?

What's that? An opportunity to post a picture of my stick?

ibara-stick-small.jpg

If you're modding a DC stick and you want to keep it a DC stick, the soldering is dead easy. The pads to solder to on stick and buttons are massive and well exposed, and there's virtually no chance of doing major damage by overheating if you're sensible. If you've got all the tools (especially the Dremel and decent curved file) it's a pretty easy job. I strongly recommend using Sanwa parts in a DC mod (and in general, really...) since Seimitsu sticks will come up short due to the shaft length.

That looks wicked, going to order 2 sanwa sticks and 12 buttons for £65 from http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SANWA-JOYSTICKS-AND-...p3286.m20.l1116

Is that a good price?

No one spotted the obvious misconception by magicianlord? Those parts in that ebay link are gremlin :) I'll be hitting them up when I decide what I'm doing with the crap thats currently in my cab (if I rotate the screen and get another cab, theres no point changing them in that cab)

Incidentally, my reason for coming in here is to say "I am now a Third Strike player as of today" :) Originally I just wanted to see if the computer in my cab would run Third Strike and it does it marvelously (even though mame says the video isn't 100% I couldn't see any issues). I ended up playing through to the credits with Ken, with variable difficulty. Basically I'm crap, but I was mixing it up more then I would do on SFII.

Jat, try this place:

http://www.akihabarashop.jp/developments/index.php

I've bought a load of stuff from there and they're ace.

I second this, the only downside is the potentially long wait you could have and the weak pound at the moment.

On the other hand, I have had at least one dodgy stick that seemed like a knock off Sanwa from Gremlin. The mounting plate was attached with screws made out of chocolate (one of them had to be drilled through) and the stick became loose and wobbly within a matter of weeks, with one of the microswitches dying a couple of months later. So I can't really recommend them.
