Played some more of this last night, getting access to the Crucible. Didn't really enjoy that at all. I'm not really great at PvP anyway but when you are essentially also totally underpowered compared to eveyone else playing it really isn't any fun at all.

You're not really underpowered, except you might not have the right set of weapons. levelling advantages are turned off: I'm not even convinced that higher level skills are available.

Okay, I'm quite willing to accept that I'm crap at it, and probably gave up a bit mentally when I assumed everyone was more powerful than me. I just got annoyed as people seemed to be able to kill me with one shot whereas I was pumping bullets into them and hardly denting their energy.

What weapons are you using? It's very possible that you are just pumping bullets into other players, especially if they're titans.

Hit Devil's Lair last night with Soong and Donut, was a good laugh. Then I did, like, three hours of Crucible and finally got into my groove. Turns out the Fusion Rifle is terrific, but you have to think about a second ahead in order to account for the charge time. Great fun.

Using the Marshall-A auto rifle, which has an attack of 23 so probably pretty pony. Haven't given any of the other weapons a proper go yet as I was enjoying using that in the campaign.

You might as well spit at them using that thing! Get a scout rifle and aim for the head :)

Yeah, that's ok for dealing with waves of dregs at medium to close range. However, agsinst other players you're really going to have to decide on tactics using that. It's good for covering fire but little else.

Another hour on this tonight and it started to feel a bit repetitive. Still good fun but I found myself thinking 'Is this it?'

The devil's lair - does it have to be co-op? I sat there waiting for it to find guardians but it didn't.

Also have to get up at 6am on Sunday if I want the surprise! Thanks Obama!

Played this for an hour or so last night on Le Bone, I only got through the first few baby steps but there's definitely potential there. Potentially even greatness. Definitely will be giving it some time.

And my, it's pretty.

How is the PvP scaled?

Someone at level 8 with have much higher armour and weapon damage than someone at level 5, are the stats normalised?

Yes, stats are normalised for the regular Crucible.

That said there is still room for divergence. For instance your other weapon attributes — such as a high Impact, which means each round hits harder but with a trade-off in regards to rate of fire or similar — do carry over, as do any 'perks' they might have; items of green rarity and above can have numerous situational upgrades, like kills reducing your grenade cooldown.

You also have to consider the balancing of your class's strengths, as you unlock abilities that allow you to toggle between different distributions of Toughness, Speed and Recovery; these are the "Training focused on..." abilities. I believe these preferences apply to PvP, although I haven't really tested it.

In short it's somewhat similar to Call of Duty in that higher level players will have access to more options, but they won't be running around with weapons that hit four times harder. (The current exception to this is the Iron Banner event which disables normalisation, and is much worse for it in my opinion.)

Getting a bit bored now of all the same areas & missions, having played the Alpha as well. I'll probably not be on again now (apart from to get my emblem and if they open any other areas / missions) so that I don't start to get tired of it.
