Destiny: FIN

I'm pretty sure the Crucible announcer, the preposterously named Lord Shaxx, is played by Terence Stamp.

Personally I don't have a problem with the announcer's voice, although they could do with making some of the lines snappier; every instance of "point" could be removed as "A", "B" and "C" work on their own.

Played the XO and 360 versions today great how your character is available on each. After the PS4 version, I wanted to try the XO one mainly for pad reasons. Still would swear that triggers are better on the PS, but sticks nowhere near as good for this as the XO.

Very jarring going to 360 to begin with. But, after an hour or so, it stops seeming so low res and the gameplay makes it feel exactly the same. Some pretty jumpy framerate issues at times, but not a real issue at all. Still first game for me that truly shows how much shine/smooth the new systems add.

Didn't get to play a full fireteam with the ps4, through lack of mates on there and also network issues. Just played pretty much all the beta with Jon on the 360 and it held up the whole time. Some life in the old dog yet.

Absolutely wholly consumed with the hype. Cannot wait until retail.

Yeah, that was a decent session. I can't wait to really get into it proper and begin to figure out the depth of the upgrade system in there. As expected from Bungie the combat is bang on and the story/world seems interesting. Above all else though, it's just pure fun.

Can't wait to get back on tomorrow.

Fucking get stuck in and find out while the beta is public. It's right up my alley mind. Unapologetically 1970s SciFi aesthetic with Halo gunplay in a big meta progression system? I'm glad it didn't come out during my dissertation.

Edit- in fact it's public on PS3, I'll load it up and I can help you through some events.

That sounds like a good way of wasting the weekend. How do I join in though?

Excellent question, it goes public at 4am UK time so I'll check tomorrow morning to see if it's just up on the store or what. I think you should probably set up a Bungie account and link it to your PSN one in the meantime at Bungie.net

I tell you one thing that did piss me off though were the Vandal snipers one shot killing me on the spider tank boss level. Didn't they learn anything from Halo 2?

I hope they get toned down in the retail release, to l least give you an escape window.

You need better defensive gear and character upgrades. Swap around some of your abilities for strength focussed skills, and get some gear that increases defence. Perfectly viable to do the Devil Walker section without getting killed, even if you're up close to the walker and using your special on it.

I can't stop playing the strike mission. Last game one of the randoms dropped out so it was just two of us against the walker and the following boss. Great teamwork and camaraderie developed from sticking together, laying down covering fire, flanking, reviving each other and of course dancing at the end of the level. This game is so obviously influenced by Dark Souls in that regard.

It's well worth installing the mobile app - all your character stats and results are available, you can check the builds of randoms that you've teamed up with and it displays a countdown for loot restocking the in the tower.

What an absolute monster of a game this is going to be.

Yeah, I thought that might be the case. To be honest I wasn't really paying much attention to the gear upgrade paths. I was too focussed on getting back to the action. I'll spend a but more time checking things out tonight.

This is exactly what I feared it would be: plugging endless rounds into bullet-sponge enemies.

So why is it so fun?

That's weird, apart from the bosses I wouldn't call anything a bullet sponge (though even they have weak spots). All of the enemies can be taken down efficiently with the right approach.

Nor have I been one-shot by a vandal sniper

They'll certainly take a chunk out of you and force you into a defensive position, but that's how it should be, right?

Yes I meant the bosses.

Yes I meant the bosses.

So the very last boss on the strike mission then. I don't get this overly used term "bullet sponge" anyway. Destiny is like an RPG in the sense that you can do more damage with upgaded stats and weapons, and by targetting weak spots. No one criticises Dark Souls enemies for the same reason.

Exactly how I thought at first, turns out I was using underpowered weapons and not hitting the weak spots (don't even bother with the meme) - with a powerful weapon, coordinated teamwork and accurate fire rather than just spraying bullets, the bosses go down a LOT faster. Look for their patterns, get up close and super/grenade them, use rocket launchers and high-powered sniper rifles from range. For the Devil Walker it's possible to get right up close and batter him in minutes, but you need other team members drawing his fire and baiting him.

I wouldn't even really call the Devil Walker a bullet sponge if you are in a team that knows what it is doing. We got one down fairly quickly having two people on one side of the bit where it is and the other person holed up on the opposite side in the bit with the stairs and whilst the person on the stairs drew its fire that way, the other two were shooting it in the legs and we alternated like that when it turned from side to side. You can also get some pretty good damage getting it right under the head bit.

I was doing the strike and one guy dropped out - he kept just standing still but would then join in for a bit but then just left. The other guy dropped out after running around like a headless chicken at the mr skinny legs section. Both lvl 8s too, I expected better of them :(

I hope to have another stab at it tonight.
