Destiny: FIN

I had to give up on the walker on the strike mission last night, it was doing my head in. Is there an easy way to take it down? I twigged that you had to blast its legs, but it still seemed to take a ludicrous amount of time to run down its health bar.

It didn't help that one of the randoms I was playing with dropped out, and the other was comically inept, but it still seemed to be insanely difficult to kill the walker. How do you do it? I was using a level 8 titan character with a Galahad-B auto rifle, a Hieracon LR3 sniper rifle, and a Sargon-C machine gun; there wasn’t enough ammo to make much headway with the sniper rifle or the LMG, and I got smoked every time I tried to get close enough to use my L1+R1 attack.

Is there some trick, or is it just the fact that having three players gives you the edge?

The general strategy is that all three players spread out to flank the tank, each taking cover whenever it's targeting them; it has pretty obvious tells. Stay a medium distance from it, so you don't get stomped or hit by its bouncing mines, and try to coordinate your attacks against one leg at a time.

When you destroy a leg's armour the tank will collapse and start venting a heat sink, a serious design flaw which you should punish with your hard hitting weapons during the limited window. Afterwards you focus on a different leg, rinse and repeat.

Periodically Fallen reinforcements will enter the arena. It's pretty easy to hang back and avoid them, but they're essentially your means of refilling ammo. As such I find it's best to save your Supers for wiping out groups as they arrive, as powers are fairly ineffective against the tank itself.

Nor have I been one-shot by a vandal sniper

They'll certainly take a chunk out of you and force you into a defensive position, but that's how it should be, right?

If that was the case that'd be cool, but I was getting one shotted for fun off them last night. I am only a level 5 though and we did have it on hard.

It's no big deal, it just shows me that I need to pay more attention to what gear I'm rocking tonight.

Oh well that might explain it, i've not tried it on hard yet :hat:

So yellow damage numbers then, are they critical damage? Because someone mentioned red damage numbers (which I've never seen!). Which would lead me to think red = critical and yellow = precision ?

Yellow is critical damage, see it a lot when I'm in sniper mode. I've not seen red yet, but that must be why some high level enemies are basically invulnerable at present.

Anyone looking for a hunter to do the strike mission tonight or tomorrow on bone feel free to hit me up.

Gonna try the other two classes for a while, but hunter suits me fine, I played like this with Defiance.

Anyone know:

What the (initial) level cap in the final game will be?

Do the optional exploration side quests keep re spawning or are they finite? They are good fun to just pootle around doing and helping out others.

I've only played 3 missions, but outside of the boss battles (which are great) Destiny feels mega-flabby. Like Halo, Destiny is at its best when you've got your back to the wall with limited tactical options, but most of the time you're traversing needlessly expansive environments, picking off enemies from a distance, and chasing around an objective marker (which may or may not stay on screen long enough to be useful).

Also, does the tower/hub area need to be quite so convoluted? I'm fine with having to traipse around a bit to access what are essentially menus, but does there really need to be so many of shops, and do they really need to be so spread out? It's just another example of Destiny struggling to justify its own scale. Why is everything so big and wide-open when the game is clearly more fun in tight, enclosed spaces?

Maybe I shouldn't be coming at this from the perspective of a Halo fan, but the combat is the best aspect of this game by far. Everything else just feels like padding.

Which difficulty are people playing on this? I've been Heroic all the way on Halo but with its RPG leanings I just figured this is more level specific. So I've been sticking to Normal if my level dictates that kind of thing.

It's much more level specific.

As you reach level 8, everything becomes "normal" because the difficulty is scaled according to your level.

Well, the speculation is still 20. But still, you got to remember that much like Alpha and Beta, because you've hit lvl.8 it doesn't mean you don't stop levelling up your skill tree.

The quests that you pick up from the nodes are infinitely spawn able so far. Even if you exhaust your current area, give it a few minutes and it will refresh a new set of objectives.

Well, it seems like my time with the beta is over. And not through choice.

Yesterday i played for a while in the morning, just pottering about, and turned it off to come back to later.

Last night, i tried to login but it gave me an error code of nightingale. According to the bungie website, the fix is to download and reinstall. Now, i didn't like doing this as i have deathly slow broadband. However, i decided to let the thing re download overnight.

Come to it this morning, try to login, and the same error code. There is no real help about on the net, and the few people who have mentioned it on the bungie forums have not had any response.

I was unsure about this, because it also mentions enemies being more aggressive and attacking in greater numbers.

Up to level 8 now. Did the devil level with two unknowns and it got a bit too chaotic at points. Fun none the less but as a couple have mentioned, the fun soon became a slog.

Still looks great and the weapons have a real solid feel. Didn't like the grenade cool down at first but it makes for some tense battles.

Killed a Devil Walker entirely on my own last night with my L8 Warlock (just exploring, not on a Strike).

It was pure attrition, but I was determined to kill the fucker. Couldn't have done it without the sniper rifle, though. That was dealing 530 points each round to his leg joints. Main problem was running out of special ammo, so having to go and kill the minions and farm green boxes.

Even elected to die a fair few times to respawn with ammo when I had exhausted everything, and didn't want to leave that particular area in case he respawned. Took me about an hour (and not one other Guardian stumbled in surprisingly). But I killed the clanking bastard. No XP of course, because already level 8.

I never grind games, I've never played an MMO. But this game, man. It's going to kill me come September.

So what's the lowdown on voice chat in this? I haven't yet played in a 'friends' fireteam where I presume we will just be in party chat, however when I did the Devil's mission with 2 other randoms I didn't hear anything from them either, this is playing on the bone. Is it just likely they didn't have their mics on, or do you need to do something specific to enable voice?

Proximity chat would be great as well for when you pass randoms in general.

There's a known problem with using the party app in the beta so just leave that alone and the game will handle chat within your fireteam. Works great and sounds just as clear as console party. There's mic icons so you can see who is plugged in.

I found the Warlock grenades to work well with the Devil walker. Get close, lob one on top of it and retreat, takes a good chunk of health off.

Also, a quick question about some of the missions... there are some 'scouting' missions that seem to require you to go to a vantage point and survey the battlefield. However they seem unreachable for my Warlock as I don't have a double-jump. Any tips? or is it just undoable and I need to be playing a different character type?

You have Glide, right? Just double tap jump and you'll go up pretty high; don't wait for the highest point of your initial jump as your magical jetpack takes a moment to kick in.
