The next episode really can't come soon enough. It's making a late run for my favourite TV of the year, and I've watched a lot of stuff this year.

I recently watched an episode of 30 Rock with a cameo from Lithgow doing his bumbling comedy goon schtick and it still hasn't tarnished my perception of Trinity as a fucking terrifying character. He needs some recognition for this performance, he really does.

Lithgow is amaze thou. Made even worse from the fact that he's so nice in everything else.

He was nasty in Santa Claus the Movie which I saw as a kid. So seeing him nasty now as an adult, just makes it even darker from my own personal perspective. He's absolutely fantastic in this.

My first knowledge of Lithgow was in Raising Cain, so I've always thought of him as a scary, creepy bastard, and so the jaunty roles for which he's since become famous don't quite sit right. :)

He has been utterly fanatasic, I agree. His disturbing ability to flip between genteel suburban pillar of the community to deranged filth-spitting psychopath without breaking stride is something to behold.

Same here, the whole Third Rock thing just seemed really odd to see him in but that's what most people associate him with these days, sadly. Good to see him back to doing something he's really, really fucking good at - I love that mix of cold detachment and gentle warmth between one breath and the next.

I normally avoid the 'Next week on...' segments like the plague but thanks to the excited chatter in here went back and watched it. Oh, my. They struck just the right balance, giving you enough to get *very* excited without really spoiling anything.

That one shot of Trinity walking out of the lift into the homicide office is enough to convince me (as if I needed convincing!) that these last two episodes are going to be absolutely, completely unmissable.

Does anyone know if the finale is going to air as 2 episodes in a single night (like Lost has always done), or whether we're getting one on Monday and then a week of torture until the next? Seems strange to trail the final two episodes together if they're going to be a week apart...

One this week, last one next week.

HELLO ...DEXTER MORGAN

Incredible- I don't remember Dexter ever being this well written or paced, is it just me or has it really gone up a notch from not only other seasons, but most other tv shows.

I think it's always been this good to be honest? Would I be right in thinking the people who don't like season 2+3 much are those who watched it back to back? I think Dexter is the kind of show that works better when you watch 1 episode a week.

Nah I've watched it week to week from s2. The other seasons were good, but 4 is on another level. Dexter is a deeper character and John Lithgow is genuinely incredible.

Going against the grain somewhat, I rate Season 3 as the best of the lot. The net closing in on Dexter, the whole Doakes conundrum (and the way they played with his inevitable death pulling rug after rug away from you), the burning building at the end (with Dexter's face on fire in the background). But yeah, its all consistently brilliant television - the writers have proved time and time again that there is no end to the concept and they can keep delivering nail biting story lines. I'd be happy for it run another three seasons at least.

I've kind got this idea that the last season should start with Dexter on the electric chair, recounting everything that led up to that moment in a season long flashback, because - let's be honest here - he does have to die.

Great, great episode. I genuinely didn't see the

suicide

coming, and the final cliffhanger was just epic.

I'm just sad that once the show is over I won't be able to stare into Christine's delicious big green watery eyes. <_<

Season 2.

Season 3 was Jimmy Smits.

Ah, yes. My mistake.

They seem to be making a big deal towards the end of this season about Dexter becoming a family man. I like how rushed the Truck driver kill was in this episode. He barely had time to talk to his victim. I feels like they are going to continue with him getting less and less time to kill, then he might start to not feel his 'dark passenger' and start weening himself off it. I hope not though as that would suck.

I think we can probably all agree that it's maintained a pretty amazing standard. I know some don't like Season Three, but all the scenes with Dex and Miguel were fascinating. Smits was a great addition to the cast, and I think that season only really suffered from the other plots, which weren't as interesting as Dex's interactions with his new 'friend'.

We'll see how good next week's is, but this fourth season could well wind up being the best. Lithgow's been utterly superb throughout, and helped make it a really memorable season. Quite a few shocking moments sprinkled throughout, too.

I kind of feel like the rushing and the juggling is leading to him eventually getting caught. Not this season, but later sometime. I think there were a handful of very small things this season which on their own are almost meaningless, but if someone were to suspect Dexter and went digging enough, they leave a trail where he had been more careful about covering that trail before. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Nothing but agreement here. Smits was excellent.

Yes. Chicky Fucking Hines. :hmm:

Based on this season, surely Jennifer Carpenter will bag herself an Emmy? She definitely deserves it.

Yeah, she's been superb. The episode after

Lundy's death

in particular. I know some people don't like Deb, but regardless of how you feel about the character, her acting has been terrific this season.

I was just thinking the same myself. All the previous seasons have seen Dexter very much in control and flawless. This season, very deliberately I think, they've shown him making mistakes (beyond the obvious ones like losing bodies and killing the wrong people) due to juggling so much at once. I'd be massively surprised if none of those come back to haunt him next season.

Would it be too predictable for Quinn to become Doakes 2.0? Perhaps whilst also shacked up with Debs for extra friction? They've certainly sowed the seeds this year with the animosity between him and Dex, and even had him show up Doakes-style whilst Dex was stalking the photographer...

Before we get to that, though, how in the name of buggery are they going to end this season? If it lives up to this episode, it's going to be rather good. I can't for the life of me see where they're going with it, and how it can be tidily finished off in another 50 minutes.

I think they will take Quinn further down that route. I can't see how he'll top Doakes though, for sheer perseverance. Doakes was a genuine, constant threat to Dexter while Quinn comes across as more an annoyance. Like you say though, it's all about how things have escalated around Dexter, constant distractions and hindrances such as being married. Despite being a family man now, I still see Rita as Dex's 'beard', nothing more than keeping up appearances.

If the same creative team are on board for the next season, I'm sure they will do us proud. The only bum note this season has been the use of Dex's dad. I can understand that they would want to beef up James Remar's role but he's basically become Al from Quantum Leap now. It wouldn't surprise me to see him with a Blackberry type device, calculating the chances of Dex being found out.

It's possible it might be a longer episode to finish the season.

Next week/ season idea:

Isn't Cody 10? During this season they have dropped in nice little scenes of Dexter bonding with him quite a bit. I wonder if Trinity might just get his hands on him or (going back to the books) Cody see's something happen to somone (his mum) which leads to his own Dark Passenger being created... Next season is the last and either of these ideas would give a good basis for everything in Dexters life coming to an end in some way, "good" or "bad".
