November CD Mix Club

Overall I really enjoyed the album, it was a pleasant change to have a fair amount I knew but wouldn't normally listen to. I also thought it hung together really well. My girlfriend loves it too because it features some of her favourites (especially the Nina Simone track). Cheers!

Glad you liked it! I was a bit worried putting together something so "pop" but it's all tracks I've been really liking recently.

The ones you couldn't ID were:

3 - Handsome Boy Modelling School - The Truth (vocals by Roisin Murphy)

4 - Christina Aguilera - Still Dirrty

11 - Amy Winehouse & Ghostface Killah - You Know I'm No Good (this off Ghostface's More Fish rather than the Winehouse album version)

Right, I'll start the January thread... tomorrow!

As promised, some feedback for Strawdonkey's CD/Upload. I haven't put any of the track names on as I burnt it straight to CD (from the playlist file) without looking at the MP3 names as I prefer listening blind, I've deleted the original download too by accident so a tracklisting would be appreciated :(:

1) Like this, sort of shoegaze breakbeats. Builds up nicely at the end too.

2) The slightly spazzy riffs are pretty cool, doesn't really go anywhere or maintain any momentum though. The ending seems to go on for AGES.

3) Is this anything to do with Mike Patton? It sounds a little like Mr Bungle but feels a little too knowing and it's completely all over the place, just too busy for me.

4) No. Too Lo-fi, I found this pretty much unlistenable.

5) RAVE!!!1! Great opening and fantastic in places (I love the heaviness at about 1.35 to 1.55) it's too complex for me to enjoy fully; every line seems to be different but would have preferred it was a little less IDM and more glowsticks.

6) Bit-Dancehall? This is odd, quite charming but not something I'd listen to for pleasure.

7) Similar to the first track but doesn't work as well.

:( Two thumbs up, really taut and full of energy. I probably couldn't listen to an album of this but as a single track is blasts though just fine. The soundtrack to a smashed bedroom.

9) Nope, didn't like this.

10) Works a little better than the last track, I like the buildup halfway through but still too busy for me - quite hard work to listen to.

11)

12) Quite pleasant but forgettable, washed over me a little.

13) Not too keen on the voice but the music is lovely if again, a little forgettable. I'm not good with softer electronic music, it just escapes from my head as soon as I've heard it.

14) This is good, sounds like something from the Requiem for A Dream soundtrack with the violins and skittery beats. There's a definite sense of unease and despair about it, mostly due to the vaguely unsettling foreign language bit at the start.

Certainly one of the more interesting CDs I've received, I haven't heard any of the music before and it's not really my usual listening. A couple of tracks I loved, some I couldn't stand and others were pretty listenable - it didn't really flow together for me in places with some jarring musical styles put together but that's just my personal preference really. Overall, hard work in places and not all to my taste but it gave me a chance to listen to some music I'd never normally hear (which is one of the reasons I do this mix club) so thanks. Cheers for uploading it for me too after the postal service failed its duties.

Trackliiiisting

01. 65daysofstatic - Play *nice* Kids (Demo)

02. Mínus - Frat Rock

03. Dog Fashion Disco - Vertigo Motel

04. Shimmy Rivers and Canal - Kera Wird

05. Clark - Wicked Life

06. Com.A - All The Young Puke

07. 65daysofstatic - Thrash Waltz

08. Melt-Banana - Chain-Shot to Have Some Fun

09. Duplo Remote - ay-3-9810

10. Clark - Proper Mid-Fi

11. Blank gap

12. Sk/um - Bonetrix

13. Múm - Nightly Cares

14. Múm/Sjón - She Attempts to say the "Word"

I first heard Play Nice Kids on the late John Peel's show; this was a good few years back now and since then 65 have acquired a drummer and subsequently ruined the song by slowing it down and adding to it. I managed to find the original the next day after the show I heard it on though thankfully, and have cherished it ever since :(

Kera Wird has also since been re-recorded - this version is from the Fat Cat Demo Archive but has since been re-recorded in a better studio, with a saxophonist, and missing the sublime bridge section where it sounds like someone has been dicking around with a square-wave synthesizer.

The Com.A track was probably the least mental one I have - I appreciate that some of this stuff is far from easy-listening but didn't want to plunge the whole thing into noisecore et al, which I reckon wouldn't exactly be a pleasant thing to receive in the post!

Glad you enjoyed a few bits of it at least. I'd suggest giving the Melt-Banana album "Cell-Scape" a try as it's pretty much over before you know it :(

[edit] if anyone wants an upload of this to listen to, shout and I'll happily oblige.

I still havent got my CD which I think McNeillR is supposed to be sending? Any ideas?

Also on the note of my CD, it gets easier about half way though on the first CD so don't worry and the 2nd CD is'nt the same at all -_-

I want my effin' CD spdkjafoisdhkfiowenf!"23

Well considering you said CD2 was completely different and I wasn't getting on with CD1 last time I listened I thought Id give it a whirl first:

01) Fleetwood Mac? I dunno really. S'alright

02) Slightly christmassy and 80's, very much like the Bangles... Manic Monday! I like The Bangles a lot.

03) Oh man - you're really going for the 80's party shtick. Great fun.

04) GAY.

05) Not as gay but still GAY.

06) Secretly quite like this. It's the production work on it, honest. *runs*

07) I don't know this... I really like the production again. Lyrically less so - sooo cheesy.

08) turn it up! :D Utter utter classic.

09) forgettable trash.

10) GAY. 2 seconds max and it was OFF. You are taking the piss.

11) Whatssthis? Kylie? Indifference.

12) NO. I dont like you Phil.

13) Considering the way this mix is I knew what this was after the second beat. That's pretty sad isn't it? I don't even like it that much.

14) NO. Singstar Shite. NO. FINGERS. EARS. OFF.

Kudos man, didn't expect a disc like this from you. At all. I still can't quite work out if the jokes on me or not. So yeah, Im going to plead ignorance and pretend it's all crap in order to keep some musical integrity.

It was well paced and really nice to hear some songs I haven't heard in an absolute age (both good and terrible). I suggest you send this CD to sandrarichards - she'll love it ;)

grumble/10

I may go listen to the other CD to detox myself now. I've got quite a bit of time to give it now though and I will because I think it might have hidden charms....

  • 3 weeks later...

Got there eventually.

I think "Nice" sums up your first disc bpempire. Take that whichever way you like. I suppose I like to be grabbed by things and even after a few listens, little said "listen to me again right now!". The first half generally would be stuff I would listen to again. The second half, ermm, less so.

01 Nice piece of downtempo electronica. Nice start and deceptively different to what I expected.

02 *yawn*

03 Didn't like the vocals.

04 nice background Musak.

05 More noodling. Sounds like a Madonna remix. The context of the other tracks tarnished my enjoyment of this somewhat so taking it out of the playlist might reveal that Ill grown to like it. Infact, Im positively sure of it.

06 Ahh very nice. I liked the familiar drum beat thats been missing in the other instrumentals. It's comfortable. Reminds me of tonnes of instrumental hip-hop tracks, all as inrecognisable as the last

07-10 I have nothing interesting to say about any of these. Well, 08 I quite liked and would make a good mix CD closer. But lumped with these other closers it looses appeal.

11 Ugh.

12 Jarvis. Becoming boring in old age I see.

13 Springsteen? I've fallen asleep now.

Perhaps rich coming from me, but c'mon, this is far too late!
