November CD Mix Club

See, it's 'zipping' talk that makes my blood run cold. I realise that you all think I'm the smartest guy on the forum, but really I'm a bit thik.

I'll give it a go if I'm not too hung over tommorow though.

You MUST have winzip/winrar and surely you can zip one file up, right? Well add the first track to an archive called 'November06' or similar and then add all the others to the same archive. Then you can upload it to YSI when you're done. Easy-peasy

Everything that I rip or download goes through a program called mp3gain to normalise it to a similar volume. Works very well.

Is it applicable to a library, or only as part of the importing process?

Apply it to a library. If you're gonna do thousands and thousands I'd back-up your mp3s just in case. The nicest option is "album gain" which normalises the average volume over the album so that the quiet parts still sound quieter, as they should do.

Not necessarily of interest, but as I don't like to permanently adjust the levels of my files (in case they get mangled in the process) I instead apply a filter when playing, and adjust levels with my burning software.

As that's probably not very helpful, I'll explain a little further:

I use Foobar2000 as my media player, and one of the optional plug-ins is a ReplayGain filter (this may well be available in various forms on other media players too). You can then analyse songs within the media player (as albums or individual tracks, naturally), and instead of adjusting the file, it adds ReplayGain data as an ID3 tag to the file - the filter then reads this and adjusts the file accordingly. Works perfectly, and is very quick (as it doesn't need to re-write the file).

When I want to burn the CD, I use the wonderful (and free) piece of software known as Burrrn, which includes as a core piece of its (very simple) front-end, the ability to adjust the sound-levels before it burns. Also works a charm, though takes a deal of time per-track, understandably.

Anyway, for those of you that don't want to actively edit your files, or just want to be able to adjust the gain of your entire library in one fell-swoop (foobar can use the tags to determine what files are in the same albums, and ReplayGain will take this into account if you like, meaning it's entirely possible to set your whole library to the album setting in one go) without having to wait days for the process to finish, it's an option you may want to look into.

I've said I'm happy to do that, but David asked me to upload them! :D

: )

It's up to you dude - I'm happy to receive another CD from you in the post - just thought it might be easier if you uploaded them. Its cool if you would rather do that - I'm really looking forward to it actually.

Thanks Wiper, I've downloaded this and it looks ideal. Any chance that you could post up your settings though? I don't really understand them. Thanks!

Would be easier if I had internet access at home, but I'll see what I can do. I'll try and remember to write down/screenshot the basics tonight.

Zok, your mix is done and will be in the post to you tomorrow.

All I'll say is I looked at your musical tastes and.... you'll just have to lump it :(

I'm pretty much done, I've redone the second CD from the ground up though as it had become a total mess without direction.

All I got to do now is final mixdown/mastering/levelling and it'll be done. I hope to have that out of the way tomorrow. I expect to be posting it in a day or two.

As the lucky victim said 'it was all good', I went for a total techno approach of the first CD. It's really, REALLY, fucking loud and your neighbours won't be happy. Also it's not the kind of CD you want to play on sunday morning or if you've got an hangover. For that, you'd rather use the second CD which is full of nice smooth Progressive/Deep house :(

Excellent! I will try to schedule a long drive on my own to take advantage of it :(

Feedback for Vimster:

1) Obsession by Animotion – Great stuff. I love this tune, it’s a pure classic.

2) ‘This Shit Will Fuck You Up’ I quite like this track that Obsession mixes into, but it’s a bit of a shame the way it’s mixed really well, but at the transition into the whole track it seems to drop away soundwise without going anywhere, if that makes sense

3) I really like this one, charming electro. Big beefy, clop clop bass with twiddly bits. Ace.

4) I like this too, although it could still be the same track! There was definitely something moving in and out.

5) ‘Ass and Titties’! Tee hee. Not bad, not good. Not great when it speeds up. Reminds me a bit of New-Ro’s ‘She’s A Nymphomaniac’ It’s funnier the longer it goes on, but I can’t imagine I’d ever want to listen to it again.

6) ‘Heavy Rotation’? Don’t mind this one, I wish I could make out what they’re singing about. It’s quite a grower. I like the production.

7) Heh, a ravetastic bass which I quite like, but I find the chopped up syncopation a bit annoying. I’ve a feeling it might be two tracks, the one with the bass line I like, but the ‘puh puh puh bah bah bah’ bits I hate.

:( Something with ‘I Know You Got Soul’ by Eric and Rah on. Not bad, but it’s one of the oldest dj tricks in the book putting that over something. It works well though.

9) Now this I really like. Sounds like some computers in a car crash with a bunch of pistons. Loving the little keyboard stabs, and the fucked up vocals. It’s a hit!

10) Like this that’s coming in, window wiper noises I always like. A bit of Atari / Nintendo noise as well, groovy. Heh heh, this is a really cool track! Plink plonk plink!

11) Not sure about this. Doesn’t really do anything for me. It’s a bit like a Renegade Soundwave rip off.

12) And suddenly, from out of nowhere, hip hop appears! I love hip hop so no complaints from me, but I don’t think it really fits with the previous tunes. Nothing special, but a good tune none the less.

13) I like this one a bit better beats wise, but the lyrics aren’t as good as the first one.

14) Good tune this, but decidedly average rapping and lyrics. Nice Bollywood sample.

15) This is a bit crappy, but I really like it! Cheap and cheerful.

16) Oof! That’s a jarring mix. Not sure what sort of music this is supposed to be, it’s very dancehally – aha! And now a dreadful slice of dnb mixes over it.

17) Not sure if it’s the same track, but it’s not for me. Music doesn’t get much worse than happy hardcore, imho. It’s just dreadful! With a really terrible steal of a tune that I recognise but can’t place.

18) And if it couldn’t get worse, the fucking ‘Caravan Of Love’ by the fucking Housemartins! Happy hardcore version! Make it stop! Just awful.

19) Something else horrible with John Peel sampled all over it. Interesting – but then, oh my god, now it’s the Quo! Really bad.

20) ‘Respect the cock!’ I can’t respect anything about this tune, it really is the exact opposite of anything I find musically enjoyable. It’s cock!

21) I think this is a new tune, probably the most listenable of this section for me, although I never want to hear it again! Something about a psycho bitch, I think.

So, until the freak out at the end I really enjoyed it! As you probably guessed, happy hardcore just isn’t my thing, and never will be, but there’s not much you can do about that! :D You need to work on your fades though I’d say with the electronic stuff, all the mixes were competent at least, but they tended to get spoilt when the full fade went across and the new track was significantly lower in level than the previous, or you’d faded it at a point where nothing much was happening on the new track. The hip hop mixes are much better though, certainly more adept. My favourite section musically was the electronic stuff, loads of interesting things going on there, really enjoyable. I think I’d have preferred a whole cd of that. Anyway, my favourite tracks (if I numbered them right) were 3, 9, 10 and 15. So thanks for that Vimster, can I get a tracklist please?

Cheers for the feedback. I had gone through your music folder posts and found you liked soul, funk, that sort of thing. Sadly that really isn't my bag at all, so I just made a mix I'd enjoy, to be perfectly honest.

The mixing must have thrown you a bit as some tracks you had down as one were two or more. You're right about the levels, I tried hard to get them right but it's tricky. Something I have to work on really.

I'm the only person here who likes breakcore/hardcore, obviously. Whenever I put that in a mix it gets a bad reaction. The Cuban Boys track is really good party material, it got me going anyway.

At least you enjoyed some of it, so it's not all bad. The "computers in a car-crash" track is indeed ace, a Squarepusher B-side. Love it to bits.

Anyway, cheers for the feedback, sorry ti wasn't 100% for you, but that's the gamble, I suppose :D.

I used to live with a couple of guys who formed a booty/ghetto tech DJ tag team - they had some awesome stuff.

In fact they still have a mix up - I recommend you check it out!
