Feedback for Wiper:

1 - Masumi Itou & Yoko Ueno - Moi Moi [from the Azumanga Daioh tribute album]

This is such a strange track but somehow it all hangs together - cod reggae, crazy vocal and all. A real foot tapper.

2 - Final Fantasy [the band/songwriter, not the game ] - This Lamb Sells Condos

This is a lovely track with jaunty piano, I must check the band out.

3 - Fort Lauderdale - Prey To The Stars

Prey or pray? Anyway a pleasant track, if nothing outstanding.

4 - Butka - Demag [created as faux-game music, later actually used in freeware game Lyle in Cube Sector]

A real change of pace to cheesy electronica - figures it was game related leading brilliantly into....

5 - The Cure - A Forest

Not a huge fan of the Cure but remember walking around in the early days of Walkmen with a tape of their remixes at night which was a bit scary. This is one of their better efforts IMO

6 - Air - Universal Traveller

I like this a lot, early Air were ace

7 - Hajime Mizoguchi - Grace~Omega [Jin-Roh Closing Theme]

I really liked this track on first listening and it improves with further plays. Ah an anime theme. Makes sense really. Sweeping cello around vocals, gorgeous, then a full sting section which sounds vaguely familiar.

8 - Kenickie - People We Want

Summery pop music, gets you bouncing around. Cant go wrong with it.

9 - Hot Hot Heat - Middle Of Nowhere

I thought this was the most mediocre track on the selection. There is just so much stuff like this out there at the moment, it just sounds stale and uninspired to these ageing ears

10 - Absentee - We Should Never Have Children

Like the vocal on this a lot, in fact the whole track is ace. Cool website too (feed the reindeer). Must get more of.

11 - David Bowie - Suffragette City

An all time favourite album this and this one of the best tracks. From the days of 35 minute albums and no filler.

12 - Joy Division - Transmission

What can you say? Never will be bettered as a record of mental anguish in a decaying urban environment.

13 - Doves - There Goes The Fear

The stand out track, don't know how the Doves have passed me by so far. Truly inspiring. Track of the year possibly A cathedral of sound. And the rythmic bit at the end finishes the track excellently.

14 - Flaming Lips - Sleeping On The Roof

Should have guessed this. Pretty distinctive sound, even without a vocal.

15 - Antony and the Johnsons - You Are My Sister

Pretty well guessed this. Not really my cuppa as a rule but it is beautiful in its way and rounds the selection off well.

So overall excellent, with a lot of attention paid to pacing and sequencing around the twin peaks of tracks 7 and 13 and some new bands to check out. I suspect the theme of "Change for the worse" may have some additional significance I have missed. Many thanks Wiper.

Definitely prey (despite the lyric's usage within the track). Despite what this track might suggest, they are an interestingly varied band - perhaps I should have chosen a different one.

Heh, sorry about that. I'd try not to put soundtrack, er, tracks, into my mixes, but I've just heard too many great songs that I can't kick them out. Glad you liked it though!

Hmm, I've put HHH tracks into two of my mixes, and both times they've been received poorly. Perhaps I should learn something from this, but they've been a pet band for a good five years now, and I'm loathe to leave them out. At least you can skip it, eh!

Glad you like them, they're a joyfully bleak band, the singer putting me in mind of Shane McGowan - sadly a lot of their songs are relatively samey [similar themes and musical style], but still worth a listen or two (obviously!).

If you liked the track I must recommend you get your hands on the album it's on, The Last Broadcast - not sure if any of the other tracks will hit you as much as this one, but that doesn't change the fact it's an ace album.

Again, really glad you liked the CD [i try my best to pace things and make the music 'flow', but am never sure that I'm successful], and don't worry about any significance to the title - mainly down to the album's mood, and to my inability to come up with snazzy titles

Actually, seeing as I now have an internet connection at home () I may look into uploading this mix. Only problem is I don't think I'll be able to preserve the volume control or the gaps between tracks quite as well, short of uploading a CD image, which isn't going to happen.

I had to just check what tracklisting I put on there and there's not many would have the audacity to put Belinda Carlisle next to Blood Brothers. So I can see why you'd be none too keen on it.

Gosh, that really was a month for people I've never heard of! Well, aside from Layo & Bushwacka, and Moby of course. Funny cos it's all the sort of stuff I really like - quite dark and in the latter half of the CD especially nice and noisy.

The very first couple of tracks reminded me quite of Autechre, bit mechanically noisy etc.. Tracks 7 and 8 were my favourites on the second listen through as well - what's the title of number 8 though, I think you've missed that off the tracklist? And always nice to hear Go - reminds me of being 13 years old and watching Twin Peaks in my bedroom on my little black and white telly with the lights off scaring the life out of myself! Good remix of it too, that one.

Feedback for lfj:

1. Amy Winehouse - Rehab

never really liked this much on the radio... Sounds like Nina Simone done badly. On CD it sounded much better, I think the production lifts it a lot on a decent stereo. Enjoyed it and as such I've pretty much had an about turn in terms of my opinion on this song.

2. Kelis - Trick Me

Another one that has never really floated my boat, but again, through a decent stereo it sounds much better. Think she's done better, but this is certainly enjoyable.

3. Don't know who this is...

This is certainly the album highlight for me, lovely smokey, jazzy hip hop / soul. The vocals almost sound like they could be Beth Gibbon from Portishead. This also sounds both old and new at the same time - if it's old it has aged well, if it's new it's exceptionally well produced. I've noticed that channel 5 seem to be using in their ads at the moment, making me think it might be new?

4. Christina Aguilera - Not sure which song

This is obviously off the latest album. It's enjoyable enough, tightly produced but I prefer Outkast's take on the same style...

5. Rihanna - SOS

Guilty pleasure - I've liked this since it came out but then I'm a sucker for a nice eighties riff. As rip offs of eighties tunes go, this is great.

6. All Saints - Rock Steady

Not really feeling this, it's alright I suppose, but lacks the unique style that made them successful in the late 90s and is frankly not as well produced as Girls Aloud...

7. Beyonce & Jay Z - Deja Vu

Refreshing to here the original rather than the dance version radio 1 hammer. This has got a nice punchy bassline although I don't go for Beyonce's vocal.

8. Girls Aloud - Swinging London Town

I've had this knocking around my computer for a while since it was posted on Fluxblog but haven't listened to it in ages. You have to give them credit - they're good at what they do and the mainstream music press love them - I believe The Guardian have said Biology is the best pop single in six years or something! Another guilty pleasure...

9. Nelly Furtado - Maneater

Probably my favourite pop single of the year, it's just perfect. Brilliantly produced hip-hop / R&B with traces of rock.

10. Busta Rhymes - I Love My Bitch

The production's alright but the lyrics are so inane that I find it a struggle to enjoy this... It's also way too long.

11. Not sure what this is although I definitely know it...

Heading a bit more towards a soulful tip. I can't think what it is but I know it (sounds a bit like Dilated Peoples?). Bit more my speed than Busta anyhow...

12. Nina Simone - Feeling Good

Very nice close to the album and links back well to the beginning of the album where the first few tracks have quite a 'Nina' feel to them. A classic.

Overall I really enjoyed the album, it was a pleasant change to have a fair amount I knew but wouldn't normally listen to. I also thought it hung together really well. My girlfriend loves it too because it features some of her favourites (especially the Nina Simone track). Cheers!

Track-by-track feedback for sandrarichards

Track 1

Very well known track. Nice, simple, cheerful ambient song. To my embarrassment, I have no idea who it's by or what it's called. Nice enough track though, and a good, gentle start to the mix.

Track 2 - Sia

Ah, I recognise this singer - Sia? Nice enough track, piano and cello(?) with her pleasant, if a bit too blurry for my taste, vocals. Very downbeat, but a little too simple - I prefer my dirges to explore more than a single emotion. Not brilliant, but not terrible either.

Track 3 - Starsailor?

Very nice build-up to this track, really gets me in the mood for, well, music. Builds into a crescendo with well-distorted androgynous vocals and harmonising strings before breaking into separated lyrics. I think this is Starsailor, but not having really listened to them I can't be sure. Still, a good song, and makes me think that perhaps I should.

Track 4

From one indie band to another, this one as straight-up British indie-rock. Much like Track 2, I find the single-emotion given by the song (in this case straight up whining) a little too drab for my tastes. Nothing technically wrong with the song, but I've heard it all before. That being said, I have no idea what this track is, or who it's by

Track 5 - The Gossip - Listen Up!

Now this is more like it. The Gossip are all kinds of awesome, and though this isn't their best song it's still excellent, and works well as a break from the prior drabness into something altogether more exciting, building up slowly as it does into something - still using the same simple riff - more energising. Fits well with your mix, and a good choice.

Track 6

Not a track I recognise, this one's nice. Nice variety of ambient background sound setting off a hollow, but sensual female voice. Almost certainly an electronic music programmer's track with the vocalist having no input beyond providing her sample, but that doesn't change how effective this track is. I like.

Track 7 - Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows

Didn't see this one coming at all! I do like mixes that break from one style to another like this, so kudos for the quick jump. Not a huge QOTSA fan, but this is a classy song. Nicely played, and another thumbs up for this track. I only think the song would have benefited from having the ending cut, but never mind

Track 8

The mix settles back into its mellow world, with another nice ambient piece. Makes me think of Air, which is a good thing. Gentle, pleasant, and though it keeps to its mood, it progresses. Going places slowly - something of an ideal for ambient tracks. Very nice. Actually, is this Air? I don't recognise it, but... My only issue with it is that it's a little long - would have done better, perhaps, after a series of louder songs (rather than just the single QOTSA one) as a come-down track?

Track 9 - Kasabian - Shoot the Runner

Not a huge fan of this track (or the band, to my knowledge, though this is one of the only songs of theirs that I've heard, so...). Just doesn't do anything for me, though I'm not really sure why - in much the same way as perennial forum favourite The Wildhearts fail to grab my attention.

Track 10 - Sia

Aaaand back down again. It's Sia again, isn't it? Same problems as track 2, though I prefer the backing music here - a bit more interesting. Unfortunately, her tendency to sing dirges in an overly dull way strikes again, and puts me off the track a little. Still, nice enough, and the better of the two tracks for me (thanks to the lovely backing - another track that's Air-worthy, if not for the vocals. And another one that's just too long - six minutes is pushing it even for the most progressive songs, and this one really doesn't justify it, what with it going nowhere.

Track 11

I don't know who or what this is. But I want to. Good, slightly muted punk. Good lyrics, good tune, good singer - I probably ought to recognise this. Whatever, it's a great track, and I do like the 'heroes in a half-shell" closing riff.

Track 12 - The Charlatans - Up At The Lake

At least, that's what I think this track is. Don't really know the Charlatans that well, but this is a nice enough track. Good, simple, driving track. Unfortunately this isn't a great rip, as it cuts in a little abruptly, doesn't cut out at quite the right moment, and is a fairly tinny recording - also seems an odd place to put it; I'd have a driving track like this nearer the beginning or middle of the mix, not as the very last track. Still, not a bad track, so can't complain too much!

There were many tracks I liked on here, including a good few I wasn't familiar with. A few duds, but that's unavoidable, and tracks 6, 8 and 11 certainly make up for them.

My main criticism would be the make-up of the mix - the first half seems to flow quite well, but towards the end the mix becomes a little jittery - you have come-down tracks before the music's had a chance to build-up enough, and the final song seemed like a very odd choice. Still, it's introduced me to new music, I can see some of these songs sitting on my hard-drive for the foreseeable future, and that's all I can really ask for - thanks for the mix!

Oh, and can I have a track listing please? I'm curious about many of the tracks (not to mention my inability to name the first one!) and would really appreciate one
