This is where Edges rationalisation of their 10 score comes unstuck. Id originally thought that their 10 scores were restricted to games that were so brilliant they demanded the attention of all gamers no matter whether or not they liked the genre or the host platform. Thats my criteria of whether a game deserves a 10 or not and I used to be under the impression that Edge applied a not too disimilar criteria.

The awarding of a 10 to Gran Turismo and Halo completely undermined such a view, both are games that whilst very good in their own right have very narrow appeal outside of fans of the particular genre. Edge for once came out and explicitly stated their worthyness of one of its (at the time uber rare) 10's based upon the fact that Edge considers them to be 'revolutionary' games. I believe this is a pretty pathetic climbdown for a magazine that once upon a time used to claim that it didnt give out 10s because next to no games could be considered perfect.

Basically Edge 10s have become devalued in my eyes, no longer are they a sign of a game that demands my attention but rather a sign of a game that I would love if I was into that sort of thing in the first place.

You're basing your argument on an abstract concept. There's no way to define what '10' means to people, just as there's no way to define what 'Revolutionary' sparks within peoples' brains, or what 10 = Ten is supposed to fucking mean, apart from some idiotic and misguided badge of independance they should have chosen to define years ago.

If Edge reviewed every game released, then yes, they would be giving out 5s all over the place.

They give out 7s a lot of the time because they only review the best and high-profile games.

Although, thinking about it, I bet 90% of the posts in this thread come from people who've not read the magazine issue in question. And over 70% are probably from people who haven't read the magazine in question for years...
