Edge 170 scores

Distinct muttering

Also them lines including them gushing about it looking and feeling so damn futuristic that your TV will look obsolete next to it seemed to cross the line from journalistic article to shill territory. By comparison the Wii gets pretty short shrift in the article.

oh come on

Edge is by far the best source of gaming information that we have... on paper or online.

folks love bashing it - but even though I don't always agree with their reviews (Mario Kart, Goldeneye etc) I always listen to what they have to say.

I'd rather read edge than IGN, 1up or gamespot - put it that way.

I'd agree, it is great, but surely that doesn't mean its beyond criticism?

But let's have a bit of praise too, eh? Those cocksuckers are busting their nuts off trying to bring us this mag, it must get right up their ass when they log on to RLLMUK and see a big bunch of weiners cussing them.

I personally find the wankery over not needing scores far more offensive than the wankery over thier significance.

Scores are like an infinitely brief conclusion. They are helpful

Why do essays have to have conclusions? Why can't academics just absorb the arguments present in the main body of the text? Is everyone stupid? No. It's just convenient. It aides comprehension and reminds you of the overall tone of the piece - not just, say, the last point made - which in a review is usually negative.

And finally, scores certainly don't damage what preceeds it. Get someone to tipex the scores before you read it. Then shut up. Thanks.

The worst thing about scores for me is that uppity reviewers use them as power trips. See: Eurogamer getting one over on Gears. "Take that!" they admonish, "how dare you be so hyped, look so good but not be a completely new game type."

Edge do it too, they love slapping down big name titles to keep them in check. See the charade surrounding GTA3, the slip ups on Doom and Gunstar. Doom in particular blew away everything on any format at the time, so Edge had to hand out a miserly 7.

I cant imagine anyone using Edge as a buyers guide anymore, its just an affirmation of already formed opinions...or an internet argument.

I suppose that angel's opinion precisely coincides with the average score on Metacritic. I mean, it's impossible someone could dislike a game which reviewers generally adore.

What's your take on Mercenaries, which averaged 85%? That's an inarguable classic, right?

If a game is as universally praised as Mercenaries, surely it's impossible for someone to think it's bad? You should not exist. And you'll certainly never become a magazine reviewer.

I read the Doom review in that "edge file" thingy a few days ago, it actually made me laugh out loud. Talk about missing the point completely

I hear they gave HL2 10/10 purely because you could talk to the Vortigaunts.

i still dont get your point alex, but your cleverer than me, so i concede

1) There will be people who don't particularly get on with a popular game

2) Some of these people will be magazine reviewers

3) Some of them will be able to explain why in a coherent, logical manner.

Therefore, as long as games reviewers have editorial independence, there will always be reviews which appear to have come from a parallel universe where Resident Evil 4 was a mediocre game.

There are plenty of people on this forum who legitimately don't think RE4 is all it's cut out to be, and can explain their viewpoint sensibly. It's not that they're making some effort of will just to annoy you, they just have a different point of view.

You'll admit they are wrong though.

But... isn't 8 a good score?

Anyway, I thought it was a good enough issue. The only article I didn't really like was the black and white one. Mainly because they seem to overly praise the PS3 for stuff it can't do as well as the 360 (online stuff and downloading other media), say it's obvious blu-ray is a beneift for bigger game discs such as resistance, and then contradict this in the resistance preview, and conclude by saying the 360 is a generation behind without saying why.

I'm pretty sure some of that should have been in the PS3 pullout (sample Harrison interview question: can we have voice-chat in every game?

Answer: sure why not!)

They actually say that? In what context?
