A thread for PS3 owners Here

Hello Goaty ♥

Recommended Posts

Sounds like yours is either broken or there's severe user error.

My PC auto-detected the PS3 when I first turned it on and configred sharing instantly with no config.

yeah you have a point, I imagine there's a fair amount of impatience on my part - I only spent a couple of hours total setting up the machine, but was expecting the whole experience to just be... better I guess. The fact that the first game I tried didn't work didn't do much to improve the feeling.

Oh and the controller's pretty rubbish as well

Best 350 quid I ever spent! :)

HDMI cable better bloody well sort the picture quality out though

EDIT: and SotC better look damn good upscaled as well, or I'll not be very happy

Then, thought I'd try the media functions so when to the XMB and tried to search for media server on videos, photos, music. Note that I have 2 PCs on the LAN that are stuffed full of music, videos and photos on windows shares (which the 360 found straight away) - PS3 finds nothing at all.

So I turn it off - now I'm here at work with a game to return that doesn't work, and an overall feeling of disappointment with the machine

Am I alone?

You have to open Windows Media Player on the PC first. Its not like the 360 which can find all the folders straight away. It needs telling with an active link.

Turn on sharing in WMP and then you can close it. Then when the PS3 turns on it'll prompt you to add it to the sharing list. Then you can access everything without having to open WMP.

I was using my PS3 via a composite lead last night, during my HDMI trouble. Was LOLful.

Unfortunately I had to play it over AV last night which looked horrid, (my stupid TV doesn't support HDMI). Will get a component cable for the PS3 today and switch my 360 over to VGA.
Component is awful on the PS3, HDMI is leagues better :)

Not many at all streaming tbh think its mpeg and maybe mpeg4 not sure but it doesnt play any wmv or some of the hd flavour vids its pretty limited.

Oh, not so good then.

Guess it might be upgraded in the future via firmware.

The machines a bit weird and only has a few good games but it sounds like user error really. Analogue leads (ie component) will give lossy pictures, the HS disc sounds faulty, and R:FOM is good and can't help the fact that you're Halo'd out mate.

well I wouldn't say it's error, more like over-high expectations really

well... set this up last night, plugged into my Panasonic 720p plasma via the old component lead from my PS2 (I couldn't believe the thing doesn't come with an HD cable of some sort but was glad the PS2 cable worked) and got on with it...

First - system update, so waited for that to download and install, seemed to work ok.

Then - setup playstation network - whole process a bit slow and clunky but ok. Funny that I found out today it had let me create a new PS3 identity using the same email address as my old PS2 account (why even have 2 seperate areas?) - that will surely get confusing, also I don't seem to be able to log into my PS3 account on the website, just the PS2 one...

Anyway, I go through the settings to make sure everything's as good as can be - choose component connection, 720p (which looks amazing on the 360) over 1080i - look closely at the screen and the writing has a crappy shadow effect all around it, WTF it looks awful!

Next - tried a game. Heavenly sword goes in - Big ugly logo sits for ages with no indication of what's going on. tells me it's installing game data... then asks me to insert heavenly sword disc (that's already in there). Oh no - it decides to recognise it again and then sits for a while, then complains again. eventually I reset and it says game datacorrupt and is fixing it, but does nothing but ask me to insert the game disc Not good. Gave this about 20 mins of messing before I gave up and moved onto the next game - Resistance FoM. Played for about half an hour before getting tired of it (just been playing a lot of Halo3 so maybe I'm a bit FPS'd out, but the game was seriously a big MEH if you ask me)

Then, thought I'd try the media functions so when to the XMB and tried to search for media server on videos, photos, music. Note that I have 2 PCs on the LAN that are stuffed full of music, videos and photos on windows shares (which the 360 found straight away) - PS3 finds nothing at all.

Wow talk about opposites - I got my 60GB machine yesterday now I've had a test unit for a while but with no store, no bluray movies (or DVD) and no NAS support I really wanted the PS3 for it's media abilities...

SO first off with a wired connection out of the box it detected my NAS with no probs at all I was listening to tunes and watching a photo slide show in minutes. I allready have a PSn account so signing in was no issue went tot he store set a load of stuff to DL and put on Casino Royal - anyone that says the HD DVD or BluRay movies are not a step up from DVD needs there eye's checked! Casino Royale looks great and the level of detail is really noticable.

So off to see what videos on my NAS the PS3 supports - which is basically nothing :) although I did have a mpeg2 HD version of Cronicals of Riddick which so far my PC an macbook have been unable to play without it stuttering. The PS3 however nailed it perfect picture quality not stuttering and all this streamed off the NAS.

So now I see why the AV forums people love the PS3.

Its a decent machine, just not a world beater. It has it's uses. It doesnt overwhelm you with amazingness i agree....and 720p / 1080i over cheapy PS2 component leads is a real no-no...but that's all experience. HDMI makes the world of difference.

Also i had no probs with my PS3 media connect...i just added the machine in media connect on my pc and it picked it up straight away.

I'm sure I'll get the media streaming side working tonight - so far I haven't looked at anything from the PC side. I thought for some reason it would just be able to find shared drives - now I'll have to make sure everything I want to share is catalogued properly by windows media player then right?

Are there other ways of 'serving' my media apart from using windows media player - iTunes perhaps? I have MCE (2005) installed on my HTPC which I use for all of my movie downloads - can that not 'serve' to the PS3?

I shall buy an HDMI cable this lunchtime and see what does for the picture, although I don't see why component is so bad... I remember it being better (sharper at least) on the PS2!

Does your NAS have anything streaming-server style set up, or is it just an SMB shared drive? That's what I've got and my intention is to someday replace my XBMC box with a PS3 so I can do high def video, but I was under the impression it would take a bit more effort to achieve. I know the PS3's video support is far more limited (damnit) but if it can play MP3s etc properly then it'd be a start.

NAS-wise, you need a NAS with a uPNP server installed. There's several that have that out of the box, and several more you can put one on yourself.

For a PC, I think TVersity lets you do on-the-fly transcoding to PS3.

For a NAS, TwonkyMedia is pre-installed on my NAS, and loads of others - it's good, but doesn't transcode. It's perfect for my mp3s, photos and MPEG-2 DVD rips, though.

This was my experience too. I also found getting the PS3 to receive streamed stuff pretty easy. I used TVersity. And later getting the PS3 to stream to the PSP was easy too. Pointless for me, but easy all the same. I found the 360 quite a lot harder to get sharing. Ignoring the fact I needed to shell out £50 for a 360 wireless card (bargain :o ) it was the pratting around with Windows Media Player 11, and the whole Windows XP thing in general was fairly patience shredding. The MS website makes it look like it's 4 easy steps and your home dry. It wasn't. And if anything goes wrong the suggestion was always it was my firewall/router. Even when using a cross-over-cable between the 360 and the PC. :D (Windows Firewall off too!) I eventually sussed it using Wire Shark... :( You can't really use the 360 as any form of media player anyway, unless you are willing to turn the volume right up on the telly ;)
