A thread for PS3 owners Here

Hello Goaty ♥

Recommended Posts

Guys,

Finally picked up a 40GB PS3 last week (to play Everybody's golf). Everything's working OK, but the machine makes a hell of a noise. It starts off quiet and after about 10mins playing time the fan speed goes up a notch. At this level the noise is still tolerable. However, after about another 10-15 min the fan speed increases again. And then again. At this stage its louder than my 360. If I stop playing and leave the machine idle on the XMB the noise persists until I switch off the machine. The machine itself is well ventiliated (lots of room around it) in a cool room on a wooden floor.

Is this normal ? I had hoped the PS3 would be quieter than my 360. Just wondering if I should look to exchange or put up with what I've got. I'd be interested to hear other experiences on this.

Cheers.

That's worrying. My first Jap 60GB mpdel was almost silent, and a big selling point for my living room. I was going to buy a new one next week, but this but this put me off. Any others with this problem?

Mine's on a wooden floor in a cool room as well (US 60GB model). It notches up once or twice in the fan speed dept. and it does eventually get irritating, but irritating like an xbox1, not offensive like a 360.

I have a JPN 60Gb. Most of the time it works fine, and I try my best to keep it cool although it's in a media unit thing and the right underside lip gets a little hot sometimes. It plays and runs everything silently, except Call of Duty 4. When playing COD4 for a while, the fan seems to go up a gear and stay there for a while. At this point you can definitely hear the fan whurring, rather than it's usual lovely silent running. It's been doing it less recently, and you can kind of play through it and it'll give it a rest for a while, but it can be annoying when it happens.

Still, I don't think this is the matter with drob4's 40gig. Almost everyone's PS3 I've ever heard of runs much much quieter than a 360. You may want to get it exchanged.

Same here, my PS3 fan kicks in on occasion but is barely noticeable TBH, certainly not annoying at all.

My 360 on the other hand is like that Aphex Twin video with the ugly bast shouting at the granny, I'm sure it registers on a seismic level when I turn it on.

I'm not a huge fan of rumble. It's nice and handy in racing games and if used well can be good I guess. But it was never the second coming.

I find the rumble on DS3 more subtle than the 360 pad. Also, the addition of the rumble hardware in the DS3 makes the controller a perfect weight and feel for me. ;)

Can anyone tell me or link me to somewhere that goes into detail on the media playing / streaming capabilities?

I specifically want to know if it will play xvid and/or x264 natively (or transcoded) from the HD and / or streamed from upnp devices (specifically a synology NAS with Twonky).

I haven't found a really good guide on the Internet, but the short answer is that yes, it will play xvid/divx natively both from the HDD and from Twonky. Don't really know enough about modern video compressions to know if it also does x264. Depending on the version of Twonky you're running, you may need to rename the .avi's to .mpg's to get them to play (get a version greater than 4.4.2 to avoid this.)

No "Optimum Resolution" option ;)

My TV has a shitty scaler in it and anything thats not native res (1360x768) looks a little washed out.

I can set my 360 to 1360x768 via HDMI and it looks a whole ton better than the PS3 set to 720p/1080i over HDMI.

Well, the first thing you want to do is untick 1080i from the display options. If you have a 720p screen, there is no point is letting it output some games at 1080i and have your TV scale the image. Since one of the early firmware updates, the PS3 scales any natively 1080p media to 720p, and all games so far output at 720p.

My Panasonic TV scales reasonably well for SD stuff, but scaling 1080i to 720p looks god awful. Jaggies everywhere.

Well 720p is required, but a few games hit 1080i and one or two do 1080p (which of course is only relevant if you have a compatible set :)). Really it's worth at least trying 1080i, the xmb looks better in 1080i then 720p, and games will drop down to whatever their max res is (usually 720p). In fact given that the majority of tv's aren't even natively 720p (more like x768), there is always some scaling going on and it really depends on the tv.

But if you know your TV's scaler isn't the best, having 1080i just adds more processing to do, which will no doubt induce more picture degradation. If the PS3 outputs at 1080i and your TV is 720p, the scaler has to scale the image and de-interlace, rather than just scale the image.

The other issue is if you have both 1080i and 720p ticked, there's the arbitrary way that different games choose which resolution to output at. Some games choose 1080i before 720p, others have 720p as the default. So you can't have 1080i ticked just for XMB and hope that games stick to 720p.

Sounds like yours might be faulty to me.

My 40GB PS3 is 2 weeks old, and I barely hear it.

It's not necessarily faulty, as fan speed / noise seems to vary from one unit to the next. Mine (launch 60GB) jumps up one speed from silent to audible after a few minutes of web browsing. Games take it up a notch or two higher. After 15 minutes of Folding @ Home, at the full fan speed, it becomes loud, instead of just noticeable. Still a long way short of the dim of a 360.

Saying this, 40GBs operate with less heat, so less fan noise than previous models, as their redesigned innards use draw about 70 watts less power than their older bothers. So I can't see why your 40GB would be louder than my 60GB and certainly not louder than a 360. If it bothers you, try and take it back.

My god, what is going on with the PS store - PSone games on PS3/PSP? I've not seen such a sorry pile of tat since the last granny jumble sale I went to. They've even removed Castlevania and Wipeout.

Have they given up on this feature completely? I was looking for R-Types, as it's been available on the Japanese store for ages, only to be greeted with a tiny collection of stuff I could pick up in CEX for about a quid each.

It's appalling, isn't it? They haven't added anything worthwhile in ages.

In their defence, they haven't removed anything either, so if games are missing, it's probably because you've already downloaded them. They no longer show up in the main section, but can be re-downloaded from your download history. On a positive note, Wipeout 2097 was certified by the BBFC about a month ago, so that should appear soon, and R-Types was certified by the US equivalent a couple of weeks back.

There has better be some fucking content added to the store with the update. The shoddyness of the EU store is galling. Yes, I know I keep banging on about but I will continue to do so until Sony get their finger out of their arse and do something about it. Cunts.

Just sell the console? I guess massively overactive impatient idiots aren't suited to the PS3!

Sorry, so 2.30 is out today, and the store tomorow, right?

Store is included in the firmware so will be there. I think new content will still be Thursday though.

I'm not sure what's stranger, that you're mad at Sony for giving you free new features and improved hardware all the time, or that you think the PC will have fewer updates to install.

.::: I would find it slightly irritating as well, if I played games 24/7.
