A thread for PS3 owners Here

My ps3 intermittently turns itself off during use - complete power down with the red light flashing. It's a 60gb model.

Is this common?

Do you use an IR to Bluetooth converter?

Sometimes my PS3 switches on when I switch on another device with my universal remote. I can't reproduce the fault for troubleshooting, but there it is, the random fucker.

Nope.

I reckon it's overheating (my laptop used to do the same).

i have it stood vertically, not sure if that makes a difference. . .

clean out the vents as best you can. If the fan is clogged up then you might be able to use some of that air in a can stuff to sort it out. Standing it up shouldn't make that much diffirence. If anything mine gets hotter when lying down.

It's utter balls innit. I just don't understand the point of it.

Advertising space in the real world is phenomenally expensive. Home is an attempt to instead create a space in which Sony can advertise for free and charge publishers for the priviledge. It might seem like a waste, but it probably didn't put too much of a dent in their advertising budget and I imagine it's been succesful for the purpose it was made for.

Apparently there is a 'hidden' recovery menu, that may enable you to reflash the PS3 with firmware stored on a USB stick or SD card.

I have never used it so I cannot vouch for its effectiveness, and your PS3 may be too corrupted for you to be able to access it, but it's probably worth a try.

Tried that on Thursday. No joy, just complains that it can't access the HDD.

Either the firmware failure has completely banjo'd the OS or the HDD interface has blown causing the firmware install failure.

It's gone back to Sony and I've got a replacement.

The only problem now is that I've only got 1 backup and it's from November 2008 so I've lost most of my saves, including 100+ hours of Disgaea 3.

I have switched to my PS3 aa my main machine. I was used to the updates but I hit the ultimate one last night.

Put in Everybodys Golf for the first time. Hit online and shock horror an update bar appeared. No suprise there.

It took 2 hours to update. 2 FUCKING hours. I logged out the game as instructed and thought I would check out the data size. 5GB. Jesus H. Almost unbelievable. But then I power the game up go online and I get another fucking download bar. Which whilst going a little bit quicker I just had to quit out. It drives me mental. Have Sony ever explained why it had to be like this? Massive incrimental updates.

I am quite quite angry.

I think my record was something like 7 hours to go from vanilla install to ready-to-play following my replacement PS3 arriving. Including the bit halfway through where yo have to reset the machine, so it doesn't even fully install if you leavei t on all night.

Japan: we do not all have high-speed psychic crborg internet.

The blu-ray drive on my PS3 is on its way out. I'm trying to watch Unforgiven, it keeps freezing. Other discs which previously worked fine won't load at all or I get the message 80029906 Invalid Disc.

CUNTING WANKFLAPS!! :facepalm::(:lol::hat::angry:

You don't have much luck with consoles fella. If it plays games you could part ex at Gamestation for a slim, they will test it to check it works and you should be fine. Its a bit of a cunty think to do, but hey, its an option.

Since you said GOWIII is playing up also I doubt it, GameStation tend not to give much so I'd get a print off of what CeX offer and then get GS to +£1 price beat it. - That is if there trade value is lower ofcourse.

I'd definitely take it in while you can still get something for it.

Everybody's Golf is possibly the worst game on the PS3 for it's update speed - I spent my 1st day as a PS3 owner staring at the update screen for it :D.

This really irks me. One of the reasons why I play console games is because I don't have to tit around with long installs and updates. I just want to whack the disk in, see a loading screen for a bit then play the game. I've got into the habit now of periodically going through all my games (I say "all, I've only got half a dozen) and booting them up to see if there's any updates. That way, they're good to go when I want to play them. Probably.

I just wish that if they're only updating the online component, they don't prompt you to download the patch until you want to play online. I think Resistance 2 did that, and it was all the better for it.

Yeah, I think it was the afore mentioned Everybody's Golf that had an update that said "If you want to play this game online, you must first update it", but wouldn't let you even get to the front-end without installing the update. I didn't want to play it online, so why did I have to install the update?

Might have been UFC, in fact...

Disconnect from the internet before you start the game.

or just sign out, I think (and cancel any attempt to sign back in). In case that idea had anyone struggling to remove their network cable or something.

Disconnect from the internet before you start the game. It's fiddy, yes, but the only reason you're being offered an update is because you're connected to the internet and there is one.

You can just decline the update.

No good if you want to play online, of course, but for an single-player/offline game it's fine.

I reckon the updates are only so big because they are allowed to be. There's no restriction on the size or quantity of game updates on the PS3. This is all well and good, but I really wish the system would work like Steam, where the updates are downloaded in the background automatically.

Mind you, I don't think Steam lets you decline an update / play immediately, so that's something.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a british, japanese and UAE account on my PSN.

For some reason the MW2 stim pack is not up on the UAE account, so I bought a PSN card worth $50 to try and put on the British account so I can download. It doesn't recognize the code as valid.

Is there no way around this?

Gah... mine froze this morning watching a regular DVD. Now it just goes to the red flashing light when I switch it on. It's a fat one... not sure of the HD size. It's not one of the original PS2 compatible ones, though.

On hold with Sony at the moment. This is going to cost me, right?
