Ah, I see. Still very sneaky of Sony UK to dupe people out of more cash.

Well, never attribute to malice what can be explained by incompetence, I don't think they actually meant to deceive.

In other exciting news, the 3D update to Super Stardust also boosts the 2D performance, from 1280x1080 to full HD 1920x1080 at 60fps, and also bumps the split screen mode from 30 to 60fps. Pretty cool!

If anyone's interested we're running a competition over at Console Arcade to win a copy of Söldner-X 2: Final Prototype

http://www.console-arcade.com/2010/06/14/w...inal-prototype/

Closing date is this Sunday (20th June) if you want to enter - RLLMUK'ers have won in the past, so it could be you (it's impossible to say that any more without thinking of those Lottery ads!)

So upon some web browsing I found this on the playstation site today: PSN+

Sorry if I've missed this discussed in any E3 threads but is there any pricing info out on this yet?

And I'm presuming standard PSN access will remain free and relatively unchanged.

I know its below but in case you didn’t see it the prices are – €14.99 / £11.99 for 90 days and €49.99 / £39.99 for a whole year

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/06/15/...-its-all-about/

As mentioned there, I find the "charge players for automatic downloads" thing bordering on the criminal. The rest doesn't really seem to add anything. Had this save-data cloud service I would've immediately subscribed, now it's just extra fluff.

Oh and you lose access to the games provided through Plus as soon as your subscription ends.

There's no pricing for the UK/EU PSN+ yet as far as I know, I think US is $49 a year with the option to subscribe every 3 months (can't remember the price though).

As it stands yes, I expect the people who sign-up for PSN+ will fund free online for the rest of us ;)

I like the idea of automatic updating because it's a Pain to only find out about a bloody update when you play the game online (at the very least Sony could put a check mark against any software on your XMB that has an update available for non-paying users and let you download it manually without starting the game). Every thing else is 'meh' and I won't be subscribing.

Somewhere in the wilds of the internet it was decided that cross-game chat would only be available to PSN+ers but that doesn't appear to be true. Nobody is getting it.

The announcement of PSN+ was all kinds of fail during the conference. it went like this:

"PSN is great and it's FREE!"

"Meanwhile the competition is charging, what, 50 dollars a year? And PSN is free!"

"And now we're proud to announce PSN+. A great service with all kinds of extras for just 49 dollars a year!"

:)

$200-worth of free swag per year is a lot less impressive when it dematerialises if you stop subscribing.

The thing is, PSN is still free for online, demos etc. PSN+ is more like a Qore+ than anything else, and if some people really want to pay for that then it's up to them, but it isn't changing what regular users get. Fact is PSN is still free and all the face-palming in the world won't stop that being true. If Sony decide to charge for online multiplayer then you might have a point.

This is like people complaining about Home - it's something they don't have to use, and not using doesn't cost them anything or impinge on the service they already get.

Get used to it, it's the future of games as a service. I suppose it's like a rather rudimentary, much less content rich version of netflix.

It's creation has meant that useful features like cross game voice chat and the auto downloading are premium features- wish they stuck to free games and priority demos for the bulk of the premium stuff and not have such core features to be locked away. When firmware updates came, you didn't have just Qore users getting some of them.

Fair point with the automatic updates even though it's not like the updates aren't available in a pain-in-the-arse way for other users, the cross-game chat as being PSN+ only hasn't been confirmed yet so there's hope.

Sony have to make some money out of PSN and I'm not entirely sure how else they can do it without making everybody pay, or having a premium [CITATION NEEDED] service. And if they have to offer a premium service it needs to have some good stuff the regular users don't get, but without locking those users out of things completely.

Yeah I guess so, it's better to have useful stuff to lure people in than just freebies! I'm not too entirely bothered about the voice chat thing, I tend to use skype wherever I can, which being in iphones/ipod touches and possible on any netbook/laptop/PC it beats any voice chat on any console! Woo

Hope Sony get Skype on PS3 one day, that would be THUMBS UP awesome!

Just for the record, as it stands right now I think PSN+ is awful but I think the same way about Home and I do think that's trickling micro-transaction money in to Sony's pocket (figures, anyone?)

PSN+ should at least be tied in to an extended warranty repair service, and there should be a set amount of time when the items you've been 'given' should be yours to keep. Subscribing for three years then losing all that content when you leave really is :) worthy.

For all the internet talk, I don't think I will ever use cross-game chat. I think it's one of those things that you don't really need but once you've had it then it becomes essential. Something like that anyway.

I thought cross game chat had been confirmed as being pretty much impossible to implement on the PS3, as in not every game could support it or something and therefore they wouldn't do it.

I may be wrong on that though.

It does seem like that's the case, if it is I wish they'd come out and admit it officially because they must realise it's a stick to beat them with at the moment.

Has anyone been checking out Sony's E3 booth in Home? I know I haven't but I almost want to. True story.

I was minutes away from clicking the icon earlier but I watched Breaking Bad instead. I might have a look later, or maybe tomorrow night when I've had a drink if it's still 'open'. Having said that, 90% of the conference made my spirit weep so that + Home is almost too grim to contemplate.
