Crash Junctions are what makes Burnout Burnout, and the traffic checking was one of the best additions to the series they've done. I know I'm in the minority but Revenge pissed all over 3 from a very very great height and one of the reasons was the addition of Checking.

Chrash Junctions in 2 were great, then the icons came. Traffic checking was just awful and only made the game more of a "hold the trigger down to win the race" game. Thank god they've got rid of and brought back the real thing that makes Burnout Burnout, that being the actual Burnouts! Brilliant, it'll be like the real sequel to Burnout 2 that everyone has been waiting for.

I didn't play beyond 3, so what is traffic checking?

You can drive through cars traveling in the same direction as you. Yes it is as retarded as it sounds.

You can't drive through them. You can smack them out of the way, and into your rivals. It's better than the previous versions where hitting any other car made you crash.

I put more time into the Crash Junctions than racing on Burnout 2. They were works of art when they worked properly. And no, Traffic Checking wasn't retarded, it stopped the game from being the horrible, teeth grinding ares fucking Takedown was.

They should just put a win button in, actually using skill to win the race is so 2002.

You'll here no complaints from me about Takedown being a disappointment. The single player was such a boring grind. Road Rage was ace online though, when it worked.

I play occasionally, there's always loads of games going with surprisingly amiable randoms. It's one of the best Live games about.

I think Revenge got a little harshly viewed by some because of the traffic checking (which the better players online hardly ever use), but the level designs and multiplayer make it the best game of the series for me.

I'm guessing it'd be quick to make too. And with EA releasing a ton of other conversions, it's surprising they haven't done so.

Unless of course a new version is in the works...

Still, it has Killswitch Engage on there, just loop that.

Seriously though, I usually have the stereo going whilst I play stuff like this and turn the console music off.

EA turn to Myspace with Burnout Bandslam 2 for game soundtrack - need I say more?

I would like a Burnout 2.5, something with real racing that has the boost-building of 2 withthe sheer excitement of 3. I'm praying Dominator is that game.

This arrived yesterday from VGP, much faster than I anticipated.

Now it’s been awhile since I’ve played Burnout 2 and some of the details are a bit hazy, but I recall the game encourages you to drive recklessly which can mean the difference between winning and loosing, but you could play it straight if you wanted to, especially in single player. Burnout Dominator (PS2) forces you to drive in such a manner, especially at the beginning.

First impressions of this game weren’t great. An awful, awful soundtrack with only a few decent songs, no widescreen support despite being released on the PSP aswell and an overly long unskipable tutorial video. Then your subjected to your first race freezing every so often while the game explains to you the inner workings of boost, a point already made clear in the unavoidable opening video, which repeats every time you max your boost meter. It explains that although you can use your boost before the meter is full, if you allow it to fill, the boost will be supercharged to allow chaining, ala Burnout 2. There’s no traffic checking, no crash junctions and no online play. I actually like these omissions to the game and am confident I’ll get my fill of that when Burnout 5 comes out in May.

Once you get past the opening stages the game actually begins to get fun. L2 is the most important button in the game for me as it skips the current music track. I would turn the music off and put my own on but my sound system went the way of the dodo a few months ago.

Most of the courses tend to have two objectives. The main one clears the level, and might include becoming first in a race, achieving a number of takedowns or driving as wrecklessly as you can while racing to gain points (Maniac mode, which reminds me of Excite truck.) The secondary objective wins you a car and might involve sliding a certain amount, achieving a certain number of burnout chains or taking down a certain car. Levels also have special shortcuts throughout the game, which can be unlocked by slamming a rival into the yellow barricade that blocks it.

Success in your objectives earn you dominator points, which when accumulated unlock new car types and the courses which go with them. Progression through world tour works much in the same way as it does in revenge, but fear not. You can set your own games up outside world tour where you choose the track, cars and game type, a feature lacking in revenge. I’ve only tried this once and strangely enough it seemed to add to my dominator points for the world tour mode. I have yet to try the multiplayer mode but the box claims support for up to four players.

My biggest overall complaint would be regarding the platform it’s on. I havn’t used the PS2 for racing games since Burnout 2 was released on the Xbox and found the loading times (both from the disk and memory card) painfully slow, and the awful soundtrack highlights the consoles lack of custom soundtrack support. Graphically though I have no complaints.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, this seems to be a sequel to legends as opposed to the main numbered series and the name Criterion is missing from all the packaging and start up videos. I didn’t realise their lack of involvement before ordering but it seems a good game nevertheless, that is once you get past the opening. But then again I love any racing game with the word Burnout in it (well except the DS game, but did anyone like that ?)

So.....this was made by EA? Criterion aren't involved at all? Hmmmm. I'd also not thought about the shitty PS2 sticks, loading times and lack of custom soundtrack. Deliberation is required methinks.

I've played the PSP version and it has the standard Criterion splash at the start. Everything I've read about it suggests that it was developed by Criterion too.
