Burnout Dominator

Got hold of the PSP version on Wednesday, and I pretty much agree with Concrete all the way. I'm finding it quite easy so far, I'm on the third of about 8 or 9 car classes with most of the races done, and all gold medals. Difficulty seems to be pretty fair, bar one or two of the extra challenges on each race where you need to keep your burnout chain going for the whole race or need to take down a specific car three times in one race to unlock it. This last challenge is particularly hard, and it brings up one of the issues I've always had with the burnout series, that the acradey-AI just serves to annoy, on occasion. The rival will either zoom out in front (and the game seems to only let you catch up with them on the corners), or drop behind, meaning you need to slam on the brakes and cancel your boost chain. This is the first time out of around 35 races where I have had an issue, mind, the rest have been pretty easy (most I've done first go). I'm expecting it to get better when I'm up to around the 70-80% complete mark, where you start to know the tracks and need to keep your chain up as long as possible. This isn't to say I'm not enjoying it, because I certainly am, but the fun doesn't seem to have truly started yet.

Oh, and the list above doesn't do the EA Trax true justice - there are actually four versions of Avril Lavigne's 'Girlfriend'. I had three tracks turned on, and I've now had to turn on a few more 'tolerable' tracks as the three were beginning to get repetitive. <_<

I've played the PSP version and it has the standard Criterion splash at the start. Everything I've read about it suggests that it was developed by Criterion too.

I'll have to check when I get back home but I never saw it on there. There's no mention of Criteron on the box and are not listed on gamefaqs.com as developer where they are for Burnout 5.

I think so. It's called a Joybox, or something, isn't it? Although, thinking about it - it must map some of the shoulder buttons onto the white and black buttons - cant imagine that being much good in some games.

Damn you Corleth. I wouldn't take many other peoples word in this. I wonder where I can get a xbox->ps2 pad converter.

I'll try and explain a bit more for you Moosey mate and now as I'm on the PC and not the Wii it will be a little easier to type!

Ok loved Burnout 2 (Xbox version) and I'm definitely a member of the 'Burnout 2 is best' fraternity.

Played a fair amount of number 3 on Xbox - good game, online fun when it worked but 2 things let it down for me. No high speed Burnout chains and on the xbox at least 2 player frame rate lower than single. In Burnout 2 you could play the 2 player mode like the single player mode - same frame rate, saved longest drifts, times, biggest chains etc. Me and my old flatmates used devour it in 2 player and were bitterly disappointed with 3 because of this.

Ok Burnout Revenge then - well I've not played this much - a few goes on 360 version (looks nice) and a couple of hours on the PS2 version. Again enjoyed it but traffic checking was yet again a step away from the Burnout 2 love for me. Though this is something you like Moosey, apparently.

Not played any portable Burnouts so I can't comment on them.

Now Burnout dominator - I was straight into this - The title music is a remix of the Burnout 2 music! Straight into world tour mode and it feels like Burnout 2 again. Skillful avoidance of traffic required though of course you do get that touching scrape by and still survive thing (and you still score a near miss!). Build up boost to full till it goes blue then boost and don't let go until the inevitable slowmo pile up (with added crashbreaker that when timed right takes out rivals and gives you a full blue boost bar as soon as your back on track - love this). You've still got takedowns as in Burnouts 3-4 but there not so essential here so can be done for fun or boost power or if required for that challenge. Even the tracks feel a lot more like the B2 ones. Graphics are wonderful and framerate super smooth in 1 player. I can't comment on multiplayer as I've only got 1 Ps2 pad at moment and no one who likes games nearby to play with me anyhow. It does look like it might be interesting with party play and a kinda create you own multiplayer mode thing. I've got no complaints using the PS2 pad with this though I'm sure a Xbox pad would be better.

Downsides - You know how I love my crazy tunes Moosey and sorely miss my fab Xbox custom soundtrack. Most of the tunes are forgettable 'non music' IMHO but when the 4th Burnout chain has kicked in and the pitch of engine has crept even higher the music fades out and the sound of rushing wind replaces it - I like.

No crash mode. Crash mode is of course great fun and will always be missed but I don't mind it not being here - not one bit as the other additions more than make up for this.

So for me so far it's Burnout 2 with the good bits from the others, the version I'd been hoping for in fact.I would recommend this to you and if you don't like it then you can goad me about it come the 31st. :D

No 16:9 = sales--

What a bloody stupid omission.

The game does support 16:9 - it detects the Screen Ratio settings of your PlayStation. If that is set to widescreen, the image is formatted appropriately.

It also supports progressive scan, hold down Cross and Triangle on boot and you will get the prompt (same as Revenge).

My PS2 is set to 16:9 ratio and the game looks stretched when I have my tv in widescreen mode.

I've played it a bit more and I think you're pretty much bang on there - it's fun but there's something lacking for me at the moment, maybe because of the lack of real challenge so far. I think after playing so much online Revenge on the 360 that going back to a single player Burnout feels like a drab experience in comparison. I'm hoping that Burnout Chaining returns for the next "proper" Burnout game, they're the most compelling thing about this - especially on the near miss challenges and Mayhem modes.

I quite like that Girlfriend track though, it reminds of Toni Basil's Hey Mickey - fun throwaway pop :D 4 versions of it is boggling however, I've no clue what they were thinking there - well, beyond the truckloads of money they must have got.

For anyone interested in a PAL version of this game who doesn't mind importing:

I've just been looking around to see how much this would be to pre-order on the PS2 and I've been surprised by what I've seen. It's around £30 in all the usual places here but it's only about £16 (roughly £18 with delivery) from DVDCrave.com in Australia.

It looks like the PSP version is the same price:

Xbox custom soundtracks ftw- er, oh. Bugger :(.

Still, it has Killswitch Engage on there, just loop that.

Seriously though, I usually have the stereo going whilst I play stuff like this and turn the console music off.

I would like a Burnout 2.5, something with real racing that has the boost-building of 2 withthe sheer excitement of 3. I'm praying Dominator is that game.

It kinda is. Only had a short blast but what people have said seems cock-on. It's good fun, not very punishing (unlike 3) and has an awful soundtrack. Also, it now has cars with character, like 2 did :( I hated the souless sameness of the Takedown and Rewengi cars, so this bit makes me happy.

The fucking PS2 pad is the fucking pits though. Gives me cramp when Im accelerating and boosting.
