The new Arcade Fire album will be called 'Neon Bible'

Well, I'm loving the new album and I don't care what anyone says. Like the first, I'm finding it to be a real grower. It must have taken me a dozen listens or so to really "get" Funeral so I'm expecting Neon Bible to similarly improve (only had it a few days, unlike some).

My Body Is A Cage is an absolutely fantastic track. The bit where everything kicks in about halfway through is a real :( moment every time I listen to it. Like the ludicrously uplifting key change at the end of Rebellion (Lies), I don't think I'll ever get fed up with it.

Seeing them tonight at Brixton! Can't fucking wait. :(

Also liking this a lot and it is most definitely a grower.

Also going to Brixton tonight.

Actually, it's not a grower. It's almost entirely brilliant the very first time you listen to it.

Which worried me. Normally albums I like first time through are the ones I get sick of the quickest. I'm pleased to report this isn't the case with Neon Bible: it's brilliant the first time and then grows from there.

I wasn't entirely sure at first, but it only took me a few listens to get on with Neon Bible. I think comparing it to Funeral is kind of pointless; it's a completely different animal. I'm loving it, anyway. I'll be at Brixton tonight too. I'm actually really looking forward to seeing Patrick Wolf too.

If they'd cut Black Mirror, Intervention and Oceans of Noise, and just started the album with a rerecorded Headlights Like Diamonds then even though the album would feature two rerecordings it would've been a hell of a lot better.

Those adoring this album need to go back and listen to Funeral. It's as if none of you realise what made the band great in the first place...

The first half of Neon Bible sounds like a b-side compilation by comparison.

No discostu, like what i meant by my radiohead's the bends comment is, you don't like what makes arcade fire the arcade fire. you just liked one of their albums, and you don't like the direction they're going in. I think i remember you saying, ages ago, that everything but 2 tracks of the debut ep were completely forgettable too.

what i mean is you don't like arcade fire, you like funeral.

and you should respect what they're doing, because they're obviously very talented. you're acting like they're shit cause they're not doing what you want.

I went! I got a call at 8:20 asking if I wanted a free ticket, was in a cab 30 seconds later speeding toward Brixton. Absolutely mindblowing. The hairs were standing on the back of my neck at points... it was that kind of gig.

They were totally sweet tonight. They didn't do Antichrist Television Blue though, which was disappointing. I was hoping they'd do Cold Wind as well.

Yep, just got back, they were flippin great.

Win was definitely having trouble with his voice on occasions and the sound mix was a bit off in parts (I could hardly hear the pipe organ during Intervention) but it was still fantastic.

Also disappointed they didn't play Antichrist Television Blues but I think they're tending to do either that or Windowsill and that was REALLY good I thought...

You reminded me actually, I must get Cold Wind, haven't heard it yet...

They did Haiti as well, which I didn't expect for some reason. That's the second time I've seen them and the second time he's complained about being ill. I just think he's a pussy. They should replace him with his brother.

I totally fucked up and bought seated tickets by mistake. I also had to sell a ticket to a tout for £10 because someone couldn't make it :(

I just heard that every night at Brixton the band have laid on a spare 50 tickets for people on the night. Not all had been taken for last nights until 8pm (I think no one knows), plus all are sold at face value, £18.50.

Looks like I may be on my lonesome if my housemate can't get cover for work, every other bugger is busy.

Just thought someone may want to know, but as it's Friday they could have gone already. Brixton academy no: 02077713000

Saw then at Brixton tonight. I haven't heard the new album and didn't know many of the songs but it was a really good show. Second encore they played without amps and sang through megaphones which was weird/nice.

Having listened to it at least 2 dozen times now, I'll boldly state my opinion

Funeral is better.

This isn't to say Neon Bible is bad - it really isn't, but Funeral just seems more cohesive as an album. I always found that, like the best albums, Funeral kinda merges into one and leaves us with something that's more than a bunch of tracks thrown together in a semi-random order. That might sound a little pretentious, and it slightly is, but it doesn't make it any less true.

Neon Bible never quite reaches that form of cohesion. To me, it's more of a poppy chorus-orientated affair, a lighter listen with more individual stand-out songs despite being the darker album, with bolder choruses with less delicate touches and fewer subtle hooks which gnaw into your brain and leave you reaching for the repeat button.

But then I am comparing it to Funeral, which is a touch unfair. On its own it's really quite good and stands up well without trying to be its predecessor. But it is "really quite good" and falls short of "masterpiece".

Same for the first half hour or so on Friday night. Bit fucking ridiculous when you're playing the same venue four nights in a row, you'd think they'd have their fucking levels sorted.

Quite disappointed overall, they didn't play Antichrist and the whole middle part of the set was just all the dull plodding stuff you wouldn't want to hear in a live setting. Obviously they smashed it at the end with Rebellion, Wake Up and Power's Out but it really rammed home the fact that, while I do like the new album, there's nothing there that compares to the highest high points of Funeral in terms of bouncing around like a bastard singing along at the top of your lungs.
