The new Arcade Fire album will be called 'Neon Bible'

Reading between the lines of the interview with the band in The Observer, I've got a suspicion that even the band don't think Neon Bible is that good.

I had another listen to it today on the way home from work and it's no way near as bad as I initially said it was. But a lot of it is terribly average.

Interesting...What did they say about it?

I didn't read that interview on principle, because it was by Paul Morley, and the link to it on the Guardian website said something like 'Could Arcade Fire be the best band of all time?', which is the most ridiculously retarded thing ever.

You know that bit in The Armando Iannucci Shows where he's a magician giving life lessons to kids ("One tin of tomatoes plus any vegetable: shazam! An acceptable pasta sauce!") and he's going through the newspapers and he says that as you get older you'll find the Guardian increasingly more annoying? Well, I thought of that.

Other than describing very briefly the process of making the new record, and saying they hope they make something that lasts, they don't compare the two albums at all. The 'best band in the world' is actually a piss take of an earlier piece in the NME which described the band as such.

It's not a great piece. Needed more talk from the band.

Very little. I just thought they were a bit non-commital about it, you know. When you've accomplished something and you're proud of it, you're usually happy to proclaim to everyone. I get the feeling that, maybe a month or so after finishing the record, they sat back and thought "Hmm, maybe it's not so good after all".

Or maybe I'm reading too much into things and Win was just being modest.

No Cars Go and My Body Is A Cage are both amazing in my opinion but to be honest the rest of the album isn't doing that much for me yet. I do find that the title track gets stuck in my head from time to time though. I suspect it'll be a grower.

I've read a review of it somewhere that worded it quite nicely, it was something like this:

"Neon Bible is a big step forward for the band, but in the process it loses what made Funeral so special: magic."

I booked tickets earlier to see Arcade Fire in Cardiff on 30th Oct. I can't wait. :D

I decided I was going to book a ticket for the Cardiff show yesterday, so assuming I can get a friend to commit before they all sell out I should be there too. :D

Just wanted to revive this thread to once again say how fecking brilliant Neon Bible is. Hadn't listened to it for a few months and going back to it made me realise that it really is every bit as good as Funeral (IMO obviously).

That is all.

i have to admit, i prefer neon bible to funeral...

I only started listening to the Arcade Fire this year, I liked the various bits off Neon Bible that I heard so I bought it and love it. Then I read this thread (maybe) and thought I had better go get myself Funeral. While I like Funeral, I much prefer Neon Bible.

In saying that Rebellion (Lies) is by far and away my favourite song.

Go figure.

Either way I've enjoyed no other new music (to me) as much this year.

Bump!

I went to the Cardiff gig yesterday, and it was absolutely incredible! It started off promissingly enough, with a fairly decent US band called Wild Light, followed by an overlong but enjoyable enough performance from Clinic. Arcade Fire were something else though.

They kicked off fairly innocuously with Ocean of Noise, stepped things up a bit with Tunnels, and then they just got better and better. No Cars Go was a particular highlight (I was singing along to everything by then), The lovely Regine sang both In The Back Seat and Haiti, and after what had been an incredible set they all came back to finish with Intervention and, of course, Wake Up.

I managed to get a place about a metre away from the stage, but before long the crowd went nuts and pushed me almost right to the front, and I couldn't help but get caught up in the general euphoria. I was sweating like a rapist by the time it finished.

I ended up going in the end. Cardiff was great stuff. Missed Wild Light, and didn't think much of Clinic even when their mics and instruments were actually working, but Arcade Fire just won everything last night.

Was a bit worried because the crowd didn't seem to really be into it at the start, but once they started rolling out the hits everything got crazy and a good sing and dance was had by all. Well, most. The last hour of the set just went by in a flash.

Highlight was probably Keep the Car Running, and obviously Wake Up.
