Gamesindustry.biz is reporting that Play are describing the PS3 as the most pre-orderd console of all time, claiming six times more pre-orders than it received for PlayStation 3 than Xbox 360 - and 15 times more than the Nintendo Wii.

Why does that seem to clash so much with all the other anecdotal stuff I'm hearing? Anyone know who's right?

If that is the case, I sure hope they get more stock than they did with the 360 & Wii.

Many people who have no real interest in video games consoles have seen there is profit to be made from the launches of the 360 and Wii. Reading some other forums which arent games forums it isnt unusual to read of people ordering 10+ consoles purely to make some money. That could explain a large number of initial preorders. Would be quite amusing if that turned out to be the case, with hundreds of unsold consoles sitting on ebay.

Although the fact that you can still order one from Amazon, hours after it became available either suggests the initial allocation is huge, or that the demand just isnt as high as Sony might hope.

Well, we know that the UK allocation of PS3s is somewhere around 300,000 don't we? What was the equivalent number for Wii and X360?

the biggest question about Play's claim is how many systems are they receiving for the initial uk launch for the ps3 vs. what they received for the the 360 and the wii launches.

it may in fact be true if demand from other retail chains hasn't been that high and therefore Play is receiving the lion's share of the initial allocations.

now, the next question is whether or not the systems are actually spoken for or if they're pulling some sort of advertising gimmick to try and generate hype and subsequently more pre-orders.

Just to let anyone who missed out know, apparently more consoles are available to preorder tommorow, it seems Amazon stuck to only selling the consoles between 9-5 and have simply turned off the preorder button rather than sold out.

If true that's insane.

Where did this rubbish about 70 quid games come from? You can clearly see that they are 49.99, and those prices will go down, just like the price of the PS3!

The PS3 in no bigger than any other console.

You do need alot of memory, because the game saves are bigger than a PS2's. And this is also a multi-media console so you need memory. This is NOT, as someone said a PC dressed up as a console! (which was said defending an XBox!!! :( Which is the very definition of a "PC dressed up as a console") This is specifically designed for gaming.

The motion sensing controller was first designed for the PlayStation, it didn't catch on...until Nintendo stole it! The Wii-mote is a gimmick, designed for kids...if it's so good why did they "invent" a PlayStation style controller for the Wii? I loved Nintendo and then they just stopped making games, just rehashing the old ones!

The PlayStation 3 is, by statistically FACT, the most powerful console around! It's faster and holds more on one disc than six DVDs (currently used by the 360). In 5 years time when Mircosoft bring out a console as good as the PS3, Sony will have another 5 years to invent a more powerful one, meaning that Microsoft will be 5 years behind Sony!!! They might as well go back to making PC's.

I'm only giving the FACTs, and the facts say that PS3 is by far the better console. That's why it's 425 big ones (not 500) for a premium package. That works out at 11p a day for the next 10 years :D When the PS3 comes out, you won't have to buy another one 5 years later like with XBox.

I deal in fact, not speculation and rubbish.

Depends on how credible it is. I don't believe that particular report. If they said it was selling well I'd believe it but 16x as much as the Wii? Obvious cobblers.

No idea but this confirms it.

Amazon PS3 page

It says they should have some more tomorrow. That's not quite the same as only selling it during office hours. Amazon have always been a 24 hour business.

Although that page said this morning that the 'PS3 will be available to pre-order between business hours (9am - 5pm) today'

It is a bit odd. Why just restrict it to then?
