PS3orders Official Thread

I seem to remember reading that they were only going to pre-sell the machines they'd been promised by Sony for launch day. Or perhaps I dreamt it. Anyway, if that's the case then either (a) they've been promised a LOT of PS3s, (b ) they aren't selling very quickly, or (c ) they're lying.

Well, various things I've seen suggest that a and b are both true. Though given this is Amazon, I'm willing to accept that c might be as well.

Would anyone care to take a rough guess at the number of preorders at play.com then? I'd like to get an idea of what people would think is reasonable given their claims. 15x the Wii count - so how many Wii preorders do we think they had?

I wouldn't touch play with a bargepole, the company pre-ordered my wii last october and there's still no sign of it now.

OK, let me phrase the question another way. What would be considered a "bad", a "good" and an "amazing" level of preorders, specifically taking into account the claims Play have been making recently. I have no idea whether 1,000 is good, or if 50,000 is good, or if 100,000 is good (well, I assume 100,000 would be good).

I have no idea, completely unreliable source remember.

Yep of course but these things are only relevant compared to other sales figures. So if Nintendo had 10,000 Wii's and sold out in 10 minutes that only means something if we know that Sony have, for example, 100,000 units. Undoubtedly price is a factor but it's strange to see a console, even if it is £425, not sold out.

Of course I should probably add that selling out is of course the most desirable state of affairs but number of units sold also helps us see how well it is actually selling.

Why are people surprised if there is a lot of stock for the European launch? We all know they have an abundance of stock left over from their triumphant US and Jap launches, don't we? :)

I'm gonna hold everyone to that thread when I try and pick mine up next week.

Play themselves said they had 7000.

It's funny how no-one wants to name a figure that would be considered "good". And it's very tempting to believe that the reason for this is so that they can laugh at whatever the figure turns out to be.

I'd say, what, 50,000 on launch day, including preorders, would be pretty impressive.

It's hard to say what "good" is as it depends on a few things (as I said above stock, price, is it sold out? etc.) but I think we can agree that 50,000 units on day one is "good".

From one retailer, just to the UK? I'd say 50,000 was really good, if a little unrealistic!

One minute, he meant Amazon alone? I thought he meant in total. Turns out I was way off for both. According to this there will be 220,000 for the UK on launch day. Amazon surely wont get just under a quarter of all units? 35,000 I guess could be more reasonable if still a little high.

Will Sony sell those 220,000?

How many Wii's/360's were sold on day one?

Game are getting 40% of the total apparently, it works out at around 10 per store in the country (obviously major population centres will get more, and the hicks will get less)

Well, I was in Virgin on Argyle street in Glasgow (the smaller store in the city) on friday and clocked the "£50 for a preorder" sign, so I asked the guy at the games desk how many they they thought they were getting and how many preorders they had.

He claimed they were getting "about 25" consoles and that they had "about 20" preorders. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
