Fun with Gamestation.

I originally pre-ordered one back in 2006 when they first went up on the website, Forward to Feb 2007 they've relisted preorders as bundles only and haven't bothered to contact me or replied to an email that I'd sent.

So I'm left in Limbo with an order or not that I can't edit to change my address details because I'm moving house early March.

I've requested a cancellation and added a snotty reply telling them what I think of their service. Gits.

Have you tried to speak to someone on the phone? I was in your exact situation and when I called, they said that my pre-order, made last May, was still valid.

edit: just called them again and the pre-order is definitely still on - no imposed bundles either

Gamestation have just sent me an email confirming that I'm one of the lucky few to get a PS3 on launch day! Hurrah for me! I preordered in May last year.

Thing is, I was going to be one of those shits who was just getting one for the eBay ££££, and since no bugger wants to buy them, and I certainly don't want it for myself, I think I'm going to cancel it.

Me too. All of that. Bastard stole my thunder.

This bit of the email made me laugh though:

If, for some insane reason you want to cancel your pre-order, call 0845 345 0335 or email us at ps3@gamestation.co.uk
Don't want to spend over £400 on a console? You crazy bastard!

I must say the bundles aren't too bad though. Console and 1 "selected" game for £460, 2 games for £495, 3 for £530 and 4 for £565.

"Selected" games are Motorstorm, Resistance, F1, Riiiiiiiidge Racer 7 and that Genji game.

The Blockbuster in Woking have had a hand written sign on gaudy pink fluorescent card saying "PS3 preorders this weekend only!" for about a week and a half now...

Vaguely tempted by Motorstorm, had louds of fun once upon a time with multiplayer Insane matches, but not £500 worth of tempted.

It's worrying when Game and other retailers have to put notices up guaranteeing launch day pre-orders.

With the Wii and 360 we didn't know until the week before that we would get one if you pre-ordered in stores.

And people were being let down by play and Gameplay with the Wii via web pre-orders as well.

maybe this could be a real damp squib of a launch. I know the price is a sticking point but it must be really worrying fro Sony.

it's going to be interesting watching the European launch that's for sure.

Thing is, after the Wii and 360 fiascos Sony may be trying to keep retailers informed as to their stocks. Nothing worse than "I preordered- but Sony didn't honour it!" type headlines.

Saying that, Game Sauchiehall St have sold all of two pre-orders since accepting them last week. AMAZING SALES.

I have to say that this is the only launch where Ive had no excitement whatsoever for the console. When the PS2 came out I felt a bit of apthy towards it but the clsoer the event came I had that familar tingle of excitement and my own thoughts started to nag, trying to convince me to find the money and buy one. In the end I did.

But the PS3 launch is practically upon us and theres......nothing. I just cant seem to care and not sure why.

Does anyone know why I might need a 60GB hard drive rather than 20GB? I'm sort of loathe to pay the extra $100 when I might never use it. I won't be using it as a media hub or anything, I've got a PC for that.

The 60GB hard drive apparently has a bigger cache that helps with load times but I can't see there being a significant difference.

The only thing you'd need a bigger hard drive for is if you intend to use it to hold images of games when someone eventually figures out how to do that.

You can put a bigger one really easily anyway, so $100 for 40GB, a silver trim and built in wireless and card reader functionality you don't need would probably be a bit of a waste.

You also get built in wi-fi and the ability to read a load of various memory cards for the extra £100, it's not just the hard drive.

Also, the games on PSN are all rather beefy compared to Live Arcade titles, stuff like Tekken 5, Gripshift and of course all the eventual PSone downloads, and as they're not demos you might want to keep them for longer/forever.

Also, a few PS3 games install stuff on the HD to get rid of loading times.

Yeah, isn't the Blueray drive a bit slow on loading times?

Right, big games and stuff is a fairly convincing reason. I don't need the card reader or the WiFi.

Can you literally just buy any SATA drive and stick it in there without voiding your warranty?

Not that the warranty's much good on an import unit, I suppose.

IIRC the drive just slides out. I haven't got my manual with me but I remember reading it when I first got my machine.

Yeah, pretty much. I don't think it even needs to be SATA, unless you don't really like the idea of having an external hard drive.

Not sure what happens if you upgrade the drive later, I don't know if there's a utility for transferring saves and stuff over.
