Hope this don't sound patronising but $100 is just over £50 these days. Worth going for the bigger one for an extra £50? I'm sure you know the exchange rates, just saying what I would do for an extra £50.

Because if you want a bigger hard drive and don't want the other stuff then $100 for 60GB really isn't very good value for money.

Oh, it has to be a 2.5" drive? Hmmm. How much would it matter if it was 5400rpm? Because if it's going to make a difference, and it needs 7200, then a 60GB version becomes better value and more convenient.

JP: Yes, I'd be importing a Japanese one. Mainly because of Blu-Ray region restriction - if I have to choose a region for that, it'll be the US/Japan one. But also because the games tend to come out earlier for US machines. And because of the price. It's actually a reasonable price (YesAsia is £255 for the 20GB delivered).

This is where someone tells me YesAsia won't ship to the UK or something.

The PS3 is backwards compatible so itll run the PS2 games.

Funny you should say that, It turns out the European PS3 is gimped...

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The European version of PlayStation 3 will play fewer

PlayStation 2 video games when it launches on March 23 compared with models launched earlier in Japan and America, Sony Corp (NYSE:SNE - news) (6758.T) said on Friday.

"The backwards compatibility is not going to be as good as the U.S. and Japan models," a Sony spokesman said.

PlayStation 3 (PS3) was first launched in Japan and North America in November and the model that will be introduced in Europe will be designed differently.

Software will take over some of the functionality that was originally taken care of by dedicated chips, which means far fewer PlayStation 2 (PS2) games can be played on a European PS3 compared with the Japanese and American PS3 models which play 98 percent of old games.

"Sony is managing expectations by saying now that the new console will play fewer of the old games, and that's a good thing," said analyst Alex Kwiatowski at British market research group Vertical Market Technologies.

The PS3's graphics and sound capabilities are much improved over the PS2.

"Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3," Sony Computer Entertainment said in a statement.

About one million units will be available at the European launch next month, as many as were made available in the United States during the first six weeks after the launch last year.

Sony loses money at first on each PS3 sale due to high production costs.

But Nobuyuki Oneda, Sony's chief financial officer, said in January the company aims to bring the negative PS3 margin to break even toward the second half of the next business year, which starts in April, by component cost savings on chips driving the PS3.

Seriously what a crock of shit.

Wait, so not only do we have to wait an extra 6 months or so, pay more for it we then get less functionality (regarding BC) thrown in. I am litterally staggered.

How anyone can see this as good news is beyond me. I honestly can't believe how much of a fuck up Sony are making over here.

I know I will get a PS3 eventually, but I was going to wait for a decent (at least £100) price drop before picking up a PAL one. The only reason for this is because I have a large catalogue of PS2 games that I would like to play again (or for the first time, such as Okami). Doesn't seem to be much point now though, since I won't know which will play or not.

The most sensible option would be to get a JAP/US console and keep my PS2. That just seems really fucking stupid on SCEE's part.

What's mad about that statement is that they aren't just admitting the compatibility will be low they are pretty much saying they have no intention of improving it.

Surely what's mad is that they're actually saying they're purposefully making it worse so they can make more money when selling it to us.
