Sonar 2007

I dunno, a bit of gabba at the right time is wicked. I remember seeing Aphex Twin at Lost about 6 years ago, and after 7 or 8 Drexciya records in a row, he just dished out the most punishing gabba I've ever heard. It was ace.

Not sure if I could take more than about 2 hours of it though, and a whole night, forget it!

What you should also take into account for Sonar is that the majority of notable techno labels put on label nights at club throughout the city at the same time. On top of the actual festival, last year we went to the Border Community night on the Thursday before Sonar and the Kompakt beach party and the M_nus night on the Sunday.

Ha, no I haven't. Should really get on to that.

Who you going with? I'm going with two friends, a girl and a guy, and recently they have been getting far too chummy for my liking. If those two end up getting it on I'm going to be so pissed off.

Well I ordered tickets online for me and MW_Jimmy last week and they arrived within a couple of days. Give us a shout if you wanna meet up at some point. I can assure you that neither of us will be getting too chummy with each other.

I shouldn't worry too much about tickets Chris as they seem to be plentiful in supply, but we are arriving late on the Wednesday so it seemed best to buy them beforehand and avoid the queues.

What's that you got there, some kind of planner thing?

Edit: Nevermind, I found it - MySonar eh? Also are you not going to the opening night?

Also, is there anything in particular you personally recommend?

Edit2: Man, I've been so caught up in other things lately I've barely had time to look at who playing, browsing through listening to various samples is getting me well excited!

We passed on the opening night of Beastie Boys and Narod Niki. Can't imagine it's going to be the most exciting night of music to be honest so we are gonna check out a different party. Maybe the Raum/Resident Advisor thing down on the beach or the Get Physical party at one of the clubs in the city.

I don't really know what you're into for recommendations but I'm most looking forward to the live stuff from Andy Stott and Claro Intelecto (samples) and the Innervisions crew of Dixon, Ame and Chateau Flight.

For completion, heres mine:

Probably won't see everything there and Simian, Black Devil, Altern8 & Nu-Mark will probably be given a miss, but I've left them on for choices-sake.

Most looking forward to the Innervisions showcase, New Young Pony Club and Matthew Dear's live set-up.

Isn't Anti-Sonar just the moniker given to all the other events and parties going on at the same time? It's unlikely we'll go to most of them given the line-up above but should be making some of those early morning beach parties

http://www.krass.com/wiki/Sonar_2007 has details of most of these already.

As I expected, but it's all cool anyway, plus there's four of us now too. Still, I wouldn't mind meeting you guys - nice to make new friends. Not sure how we would manage it though!

Jimmy, I just bumped off New Young Pony Club - are they worth seeing?

Well I totally love them so theres little chance of me missing them. That said, if theres a clash with somebody else then it might be better to see them instead (NYPC do loads of tours over here). They are one of the few guitar bands playing at Sonar, so it's a nice contrast, and it'll be dancey and fun.

Altern8 split up ages ago and don't speak to each other. I sort of know one of them (Chris Peat) and asked him about Sonar. He'd heard nothing about it. So it might just be Mark Archer doing a DJ set or him and a mate dressed in masks and chemical suits.

To be fair, who'd know the difference?

Who I saw:

Thursday

Kazumasa Hashimoto

- Orchestral pieces with gentle drumming and beats. Nice gentle way to open my festival time.

James Holden

- Alright. Again, pretty sedate stuff.

D.A.R.Y.L.

Tiefschwarz

Get Physical Crew

- D.A.R.Y.L. was actually the best of the bunch I thought with some really nice mixing and not overmilking the songs and crowd.

Friday

Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators

- Tight band, lovely organ.

Accu

- Utter shit.

Ed Banger Crew

- New Young Pony Club didn't show up (:() so it was pretty much Ed Banger all night. It was a little odd at the start when we got there as not many people were dancing and nobody really knew who was DJ-ing (although I sneakily suspect half of Justice was esp. after dropping their remix of 'Human After All'). Uffie was her usual *cute* and funny self. Mehdi dropped rock and house and I dance rocked hard to it all.

Dizzee Rascal

- Really good and played all my favourite tracks from the new LP.

Digitalism

- Honestly amazing. The set seemed fairly faithful to the LP and orbited around the jupiter room a few times, but it just works so much better in a live setting. Really nice light show and interesting set-up with the percussion kit, vocals & laptops. Massively dissapointed in the meagre crowd though. I utterly love Pogo and when they finished on it I jumped and danced like an utter loon. One of my favourite moments.

Saturday

C2C

Hocus Pocus

- Live Hip-Hop. Another really tight band.

Junior Boys

- uncharismatic cunts but I enjoyed them regardless.

DEVO

- I didn't really know how much I'd like them, but, oh God, they were good! The show was just starting when we arrived and they opened with 'Thats Good' to which I proceeded to skip/step all the way near the front. Proper massive :( stuff.

Matthew Dear's Big Hands

- Hmmm. This set reminded me of a try-hard indie group posturing around stage and nobody giving a shit about. I liked the music but the venue and time of day was utterly wrong.

Innervisions Showcase

- Dixon was amazing, but the others I wasn't that taken aback by. One of my dissapointments although this might've been more me sick of 4*4 beats by this point.

Altern-8

- Alright, in a 90's rave way.

Mala Rodríguez

- A spanish M.I.A. Really good stuff from the 6 or so tracks I heard.

DJ Nu-Mark

- Brilliant. Came on faily unassumed to a small group of people but quickly drew an attentive crowd. Dropped tonnes of classic hip-hop, funk & soul. Perfect end to the night.

I give Sonar amazing/10.

I haven't been bothered to do a full review yet but I must say it was immense. The lazy sunshine mood of the day event was perfect and the massive, dark room vibe of the main room at night was great. I also loved the big outdoor Sonar Pub arena. The soundsystem was amazing too. So loud but so clear, no ringing ears whatsoever. Just checking out some videos on YouTube -_-
